    the Levis company was completely unaware of the resurgence of the old jeans the Japanese have beat the USA at their own game. They also bought all the old machines That Levis used to use to make old indigo jeans. I love the old fabric and the color still to this day I’m 77 but I still wear and love old jeans

    • @doublestrokeroll
      @doublestrokeroll Před 5 měsíci +3

      Yeah but if you're Levi's why would you be? For decades all they heard was "why are your jeans so stiff?
      Why can't you make a pair that doesn't shrink? Why can't you make jeans that feel like they are already broken in?" So they say, OK...here you go to all those things. Then the next thing you know suddenly all these dork denim heads start saying "we want the old jeans that shrink and are stiff!". Levi's is probably like WTF? Of course they aren't going to be "leading the way" in that regard.
      The "buying of the old machines" is a myth as well. They had all their own looms in Japan. They didn't buy any from America.
      Personally I think it's a good thing Levi's is getting in on the trend. If that spread it to more people and more people choose to buy MIJ jeans then that means fewer people are buying sweatshop Levi's and other brands. It means there is a much better chance fewer people are being exploited. I'm sure the denim industry in Japan isn't perfect but I guarantee it's more ethical than made in china or other sweatshop countries.
      Denim heads should COMMEND Levi's for following this trend. Not get on a snobby high horse. It's a GOOD thing. Personally I'll stick with the MIJ brands just because I like the ethos, but I think it's great Levis is doing this. I've had a couple of pairs of MIJ Levis in the past and they were great.

      @@doublestrokeroll there has been criticism from small japanese-made brands that behemoths like levi's actually suck up a huge amount of the mill volume to suffocate competition. brands that are actually doing interesting and creative things with denim. also most levi's "japanese made" items only means the fabric is made in japan, not that the garments are sewn there. they are still sewn in sweatshops

    • @doublestrokeroll
      @doublestrokeroll Před měsícem

      @@lt3880 I'm sure that's true internationally but I doubt it applies to the mills in Japan who cater to the MIJ brands. Levis volume in raw japanese denim is not going to be that high. I was just in Japan recently and all the Japanese brands were very easy to find.
      Depends. Some are like that but others are fully made there. I've had two pairs of Levis that were actually made in Japan. They do it every possible way. There's Levis with Japanese denim, made in Japan. Levis with non Japanese denim, that are made in Japan. And as you said, Japanese denim not made in Japan. Just need to read the labels carefully and do a little research on the particular pair.
      Levis is entering the high end raw Japanese denim game but mostly for them it's still about volume. They'll manufacture anything and everything to meet quotas. For example, I have 2 pairs of made in China 501's bought at the exact same time. One pair is selvedge and the other isn't. Same price.
      If the Chinese "modern" factory isn't going to be able to meet production then they'll simply find any factory that can help them make their quota. They go to some smaller factory in China that still has old shuttle looms and that factory picks up the slack. And there you go...a pair of Levis selvedge. I bet at some point, if not already, Levis will start selling those types of jeans for more because they now know people will pay more just because it's selvedge....lol.

    I started wearing Levi's shrink-to-fit 501s in the late 1960s and have a large collection. Back then all jeans came dark blue and they faded as you used them. That produced an authentic beautiful fade. Later on wearing faded jeans became popular but people didn't have the patience so Levi's started pre-fading jeans. I can't relate to pre-faded jeans, especially those with unrealistic wear lines. They look fake and are easily detectable at a glance. What is wrong with a natural fade?

    This is only evidence further solidifying the rock solid stance that Levi's.... no longer cares about denim. They have abandoned the romance of a pair of unfaded raw denim and abandoned the unwritten stories that come with fading them. The removal of the need for the wearer to finish the story started by a pair of raw denim jeans is the removal of the very thing that keeps it alive. Levi's, now, is a robot. A robot that has all the knowledge in the world of every process however unsustainably practiced to create a pair of denim jeans, knowledge of every cotton field every ounce of indigo every loom, shuttle or projectile, every stitch, cut, hem, everything. But this robot has never put on a pair of jeans and if placed in a room, and asked to distinguish between denim and a banana, could not.
    Cheers Levi's. Here's to billions more.

      oh geezus, get of your high horse you snob. Levis makes raw denim MIJ jeans too so what are you talking about? Buy those and they'll make more.
      you want things to change? Then get off that high horse of yours and educate ALLLLL those millions of people in the world (the west mostly) who buy all the denim you don't like. Levi's simply gave people what they wanted when people whined back in the 70's and 80's about their jeans being to stiff and shrinking when they were new. And Americans are to blame for allowing companies like Levis to shift production to sweatshop countries.

      Because they no longer have the old loom machines that Japanese factory has, that can make the tasteful Selvidge denim like the vintage Levis.
      And also, American labour cost is higher than Japan, and the old loom machine's productivity is way lower than the modern loom machines, so their Jeans price will becomes too high compared to the latest American made Levis jeans. The vast majority of the MIJ brands are buying it from the handful of denim factories in the country.
