Amos N. Wilson | The Psychological Effects of Enslavement: Past to Present

  • This relatively brief lecture, 'The Psychological Effects of Enslavement', was originally presented and recorded in 1994 and provides a general overview of the enduring psychological and cultural impact of slavery and oppression on the character of black/Afrikan people and their societies, as well as on their cognitive, learning and behavioral styles and perceptions and interpretations of the world (i.e., their worldview). Wilson begins by emphasizing the importance of analyzing problems within proper context, and ends the lecture tying in the relevance of what he calls psychohistory (of oppression) to the issue of Afrikan-centered education (the subject of a forthcoming book).
    Note: The image used in this video is of the cover of the latest publication, 'The Psychology of Self-Hatred and Self-Defeat', a 5-part lecture series, newly edited and transcribed. You can purchase it at the official site (www.afrikanworldinfosystems.co) or from your local black bookstore (if they have it).

      Totally agree! However, I will say that I think in due time, as more work get released posthumously, his legacy will become that much more firmly established and contributions more recognized. The work ultimately speaks for itself. I think the reason he may have been overlooked before is he died before much of his greatest work was released. Even Blueprint came out 4 years after he died--and half the lectures we have now weren't as accessible or even known. Then there's Educating the Black Child and Foundations of a Psychotherapeutic Psychology--along with some other work--that hasn't come out yet. When it's all said and done though I believe there won't be any doubt who holds title of GOAT in his field. Most importantly, however, more people are beginning to fully comprehend his work. Shows some of our people are actually studying more critically now. Also, the availability of more lectures and books has helped fill in the gaps in understanding that used to have.

    The transformation of the African consciousness hit home for me, when I watched Roots. Kunta Kinte, a captured free African came into contact with the first generations of Africans that were born into slavery. They didn't consider themselves as Africans. That mentality of the enslaved Africans is the essence of slave consciousness and slave character.

      Pretty profound when you take the time to meditate on the fact they (the characters in the movie/book) saw and defined themselves more by their relationship to white enslavers than other Afrikans who had been recently enslaved and transferred over. Especially when you consider how much the whites despised and mistreated the black characters. You'd think it'd be the reverse.

      @AfricanThinker86  Před 2 lety +4

      You can't be truly free without the ability to defend your freedom and liberty (even America's founding fathers recognized this; hence why we have the second amendment). If the term "enemy" frightens you, then perhaps thinking of them as potential threats will better suit you. The issue isn't about whether others have the intentions to act against you--most times you can't know until they do--but their capacity to do so if they choose (Wilson). Black history as well as the history of others like the Jews is ripe with examples of people who were victimized due to a lack of power. Ultimately though, black power isn't as much as about non-Blacks as it is enhancing the quality of life and capacity of black people for themselves; enhancing their ability to solve their own problems, provide for their children, develop their communities, cultures and societies. You can't do these things without it.
