Lol did thay with 2... then got the new kits to round everything out. Got the recent kill team mostly for the brood coven. Just gotta pick up a few ridiculously priced individual characters.

While the GSC army is indeed stupid expensive, I will say that a single acolyte hybrid box has enough parts to be extended to build 17 models instead of 5 with a few 3D printed bodies, going a long way to maxing out your 2k list.

There’s a bunch like that. Take the current space marine one, for 30 more you can buy the 40K starter set which includes a bunch of nids. Sell the nids and terrain then use the money to add extra units.

After a poor showing from Sisters, I picked up the biosantic broodsurge bf and the combat patrol. A litte before that I could see which way the wind was blowing so I picked up the last 2 of the previous combat patrol in my "local" store.
After picking up the chaos stuff prior, I'd just like to say a big eff you to GW for that 14% price increase here in Scandinavia!

Brood Brothers are also playable as "Counts as" Neophytes or make a wonderful kit to turn into a bunch of extra Characters.
How do you know you're not already a genestealer's army?
Well, I'm halfway there if I take the brood brothers detachment.
They do look cool. If I wasnt buying skaventide, I'd get the brood coven + the battleforce + combat patrol.
I did just that. New Killteam box (includes the coven) found one last box of the old Combat Patrol and am about to order the battleforce for 15% off
I've mixed feelings on building a gsc army. I got the old combat patrol and painted up the minis in a custom scheme i adore. I was going to build that out to be a full army after the codex dropped but because the rules are so lackluster i cant motivate myself to do that anymore.

I first started my GSC army back in the end of 8th ed, still my favorite army. Though.. really not a cheap army to collect ever (don't want to know how much I've spent for 3k points of them overtime lol) , though it's so much worse now. Fun to play, tricky to get tactics down well, and I love the lore, really cool!
When you make city terrain tables its fun to put a little genestealer grafitti in inconspicuous places like a little easter egg

How good would the old combat patrol with the new battleforce and combat patrol be?
Thing is the new combat patrol give you the half of the army that wasn't in the old combat patrol
Honestly you'd be around halfway but it depends on how you want them on the table. For any build of GSC I think at least one Primvus is a necessity (maybe less so now with the special weapon changes) for the rerolls for his squad, plus he comes in the box with the Patriarch so you'd get two key units in the same kit.
With the particular kits you mentioned, you'd probably just need to get more bikes and another Ridgerunner if you want Mad Max Cults.
Melee cults would need another squad of Stealers and probably either some more Acolytes (specifically to build Metamorphs) or Abberants but it's definitely workable. If you're feeling extra committed, the Biophagus is the only other character you need.
Brood brothers is buying basically a quarter to a half of an entire separate army so I'd hold back on that until you're really sure you want to commit to the 4 armed lifestyle.
Ascension Cult and the other Cult characters style needs more Neophtyes. Personally I have 60 and that's not enough to really run any sort of horde list. 80 to 100 is really what you're aiming for.
Really there's no real wrong way to build Cults besides trying to do every facet at once. This is a character heavy faction so going into it with what fantasy you want your little cult buddies to embody is important unless you just want to throw cash to get the whole range.
As long as you love the 4 Armed Emperor with all your heart it'll be fine though. 😊

The question is: WHY to start a GSC army. There's no consistency or faction identity or internal through line at all.
Their 7e codex came out at the very, very end of the edition, for a shelf life of approximately 0.001 seconds
Their 8e codex was all about melee
Their 9e codex was all about shooting
Their 10e index was all about ambush respawning
And their 10.5e codex is all about... I don't know, losing I guess. That seems to be all it's good for.
We're a combined arms faction. That one style is a little more competitive than another for a time is not strange at all, and shouldn't deter people. Very few armies go full Tau or World Eaters and have the whole army built for one thing. And thank goodness for that
And the current codex like most 10th edition codexes allows you to play different playstyles and models depending on the detachment. If you like melee, there's Broodsurge and Xenomorph. If you like shooting, Ascension day and Brood brother auxilia are both available. If you want to zip around the board messing with the scoreboard and tossing out a bunch of mortals, outlander claw is available.
GSC's army identity isn't "I kill you one way". Its "I kill you any way I gotta, for the four armed emperor!"
Really need Cult Ambush to include the option to return your unit into DS instead of onto the blip.

It used to be: buy 3 copies of the combat patrol and go from there. Now...
GSC is definitely a super under powered army now. Ive got to play 2 games so far against their new codex and it was really sad actually. It took no effort to kill anything including Abberants which made me feel really bad because they kept not getting 4s and 5s to get units back. Their army rule definitely needs to be scrapped and turned into something else because for how weak their datasheets and codex are, they definitely pay out the nose for not much of an army. Maybe one day GW will revert some changes and let them actually kill stuff so they can interact with and stop other armies from just walking over them.
Honestly, of they made cult ambush work on a 3+ all game long, I'd be fine with it stsying the army rule. It's a fun concept, it just needs to be a bit more reliable
Get 30 purestrains, at least that way you can use them with tyranids, a better army.

I think it's not the best time to start a GSC army. Most of the cults are very specialised and the combat patrol box is expensive and the unit variety is not good. The codex feels like a trade catch from GW to get 3 or more from every unit if you want to change your gameplay from cult to cult.
15:00 as someone who got into the faction a little over a month and a half ago, I managed to pick up two of the old combat patrols. This new combat patrol is basically a free unit of Atalans and Alphus, seeing as I will be wanting more Acolyte kits for a while, and I didn't have any Ridgerunners until I bought my first copy of the new combat patrol. It is definitely more lateral of a sidegrade than a downgrade, but it is still a tick down from the last combat patrol. That said, two of the old combat patrol, two of this new one, a Broodcoven box, and a battleforce should get most new players very comfortably into the faction with plenty of options. Especially if they get smart with kitbashing on those 2 spare Neophyte bodies from the 4 Goliath kits across the value boxes I mentioned.
And if you can find the GSC half of Shadow Throne instead of the straight up Brood Coven, even better.
