For people that don't know: The reason people flick syringes is so that the air leaves the syringe and can be safely injected. Otherwise you could potentially die from the oxygen going into your veins.

It's less it being oxygen and more of it being that generally injecting an air bubble into yourself that could potentially block the blood flow of a vein or artery depending of the size of the embolism is generally not a fun time. I just felt that I had to clarify that as oxygen isn't the only gas to form as an air bubble and it's not necessarily the gas itself but the gas combined with liquid (that being your blood in this case) that causes the air bubble.
This is also not just a problem with syringes and it's why a lot of the time if you have any cuts on your body and you're dealing with compressed air you should cover those up or find someone else to deal with it for you, because if that makes it way into your body... There's a good chance your heart is going to stop.
