"Dance class" was the number that introduced me to the work of Andy Narell - if you listen carefully around two thirds of the way through the Tom Cruise film "The firm" this was the background music.I have been an admirer of this master composer and player ever since.

Same here, John Lee! It is this piece that introduced me to Andy’s music and I learned about him through that movie starring Tom Cruise. However, in the movie soundtrack it was Dave Grusin’s arrangement of this tune.

The track you need to listen to is "Nuff Respect" from his Beyond The Bridge album. "A Dazzle of Zebras" from Dis 1 4 Raf is also worth the entrance money.

That was an excellent and exquisite solo by the pianist! I love how she started sparsely until she played a “descarga” towards the end. Wonderful composition and playing by Andy himself.

Andy Narell is a unique talent. I like John Lee below was first drawn to Narell's music whilst watching The Firm movie. I bought the soundtrack of the film. The track 'Dance Class' was credited to Dave Samuels who played the vibrophone so I researched the track and found that Narell featured on steel pans. Since then I have become a serious follower. As a jazz fan I was completely amazed that anyone could make the pans swing whilst retaining the authentic latin and Caribbean rythms. Narell has played with a host of top class musicians auch as the Caribbean Jazz Project and worked with grass roots pan orchestras in Trinidad where I was first exposed to steel pan music in the Pan Yards in Port of Spain in the lead up to 'Festival'. Narell is a Steel Pan genius, a one-off, unique in the real sense of the word.

Andy's superpower is his phrasing. There are many pan players who are much more adept but Andy has a particular style that is very relaxing. Coffee Street from Fire In The Engine Room has a base line riff that leads to a reintroduction of the lead pans that is out of this world. Tabanca with Michael Brecker is also a gem.
