MULTIPLE KITCHEN AC'S NOT WORKING

- This was a service call on multiple kitchen ac's not working I actually found that both unit's had refrigerant leaks on the first stage circuit. I was able to repair one of them but I got both units up and running.

You know you are going to have a long day when you see a roof top of York equipment.
True!!!
We had an engineer at my last job that loved spec'ing York stuff. was more partial to Carrier and Lennox myself, but always interesting to see how the units fare when they get old and crusty.
Had to change coils on the older dr models I believe they were 15 ton.. Those were a pita compared to others. I work on carrier, trane, daikin, york, aaon, Lennox, etc.. They all have pros and cons but I've noticed on yorks and daikin the # of leaks I've had to repair on those is excessive compared to others...(mostly rub outs or evap coils weeping)
Actually love the York rooftops, they about the easiest to work on I find, pretty basic
Lol so true
You have most entertaining HVAC vids on CZcams. Thanks for taking us along.

For those who disagree with him topping off a leaky unit... Topping the charge even though it has a leak is safer than not having the unit functioning because having no air conditioner in the kitchen is an employee health issue (can cause heat stroke if overheated due to no a/c)
I've been watching for a while now. You seem like a calm guy. I laughed when you had a "you know what grinds my gears" moment
You need a wet towel on your head to keep you cool , and pouring some water on your head/face from time to time . On very hot days , i take an insulated cooler bag that I fill up with ice bottles and cool drinks , it's amazing how much of a difference it makes , that and the wet towel.
Very cool.
A day in the sun will make it feel like 2 days !
Sometimes ya have to do what you have to do in order to get the customer up and running . Even if at half speed .
As long as we are not breaking safety regulations, as a tech my main goal is to always keep the customers running .
I service forklift batteries, chargers and changing equipment. When our customers cant change a battery, they loose a forklift.
Ever think of how much profit a forklift makes in one day ?? Now imagine that times 200 .......
I know the feeling of " this needs to run "
We become very good at troubleshooting and reading foreign prints ar 3am when the customer has been down for 3 hours and your just wanna go home !!
Have a safe labor day and stay hydrated !!
Legally here in the US it can have up to (I believe] 30% annual leakage to be considered ok. Anymore than that, and they have 30 days to repair or replace the system.
Edit: This is in reference to commercial and industrial %’s.
And that's why the older refrigeration agents are banned 😋
Those limits only come into play if the system contains more than 50# of refrigerant.
On units like these, there is no repair requirement. You can legally top off the charge every single day, and have a 1000%+ annualized leak rate, and never replace it.
It would be manifestly STUPID, but totally legal.
I saw a lot coming out of that pipe a the botom in 3 seconds, every 3 to 4 seconds I give them a week maybe 2 but yeah it is what they asked and payed make it work, we know its broken, but we need to work until the new one arrives and you are the only one that can fix it safely
York are actually in the process of changing the company slogan. They are trying to use
"York. We keep service technicians in business."
The problem they have is that Lennox and Trane want that slogan also.

I have bin there, working on yorks and trains for hours, the heat from the tar on the roof goes right thru your shoes, and there's no were to run, you just have to do the job and go home and crash! All the sodium has bin drained out of your system. Yes you right it two days to recover for sure. Thanks for your videos. I never seen a battery op vacuum pump before, that is so cool! :-)

Thanks for taking us along with you on such an arduous task.
I appreciate your time and effort.
Working on a roof is hard enough. Not to mention working on a roof on a 100 plus degree day.
Loved the way you brazed the filter drier on the fly.
Awesome!
Your work is truly inspiration.
Thanks again.

great repair!!! take care and stay hydrated
came out lookin like a hero 😎
Good you mentioned it in the beginning. Here in Germany from what I know you are not allowed to release any little amount of refrigerant into the air. For car ACs (which actually are where find most ACs overall here, they have devices to check the refrigerant that pump down anything from the lines before you can disconnect. They also are able to reuse the refrigerant, which is also good as prices skyrocketed over here.
Whenever you have a lack or a loss of refrigerant you have to pressure test the system with N² first before you even are allowed to refill.

Yeah you're not allowed to release any refrigerant here in Canada too, but you will find that no one gives a crap. How are they gonna find out?
From your previous rant about anger on calls, you take your work very seriously and on the rush is hard to detect that you are exhausted or under intense heat. Just excersive to pull out for a few minutes when conditions are that worse. I mean, getdown in the restaurant, 10 minutes, grab a cold soda and continue. It helps to release stress and cool down a bit. You are a hardworker with amaing working ethics and pasion. Having a small breaks wont hurt you, make you work more enjoyable. I used to work the same way (other kind of work) and having small breaks didnt hurt performance IMHO
really enjoy your helpful videos! keep them coming! thank you for taking us along!

Isn't it shitty how you have to preface a video with an explanation on why you did something to stop idiot commenters from saying "oh you should never do that!" OR worrying about viewers not seeing the micron gauge with your final numbers? Not seeing you do this or that etc. etc. Most of those people are armchair HVAC techs, never been out on their own and never ever make mistakes. You're a great tech. Very mindful and thorough.

Thanks for giving me a informative explanation of these things HVAC VIDEOS :)
man, if i was faced with that call i would have felt overwhelmed! good work :D
Very interesting work your doing there with the diagnosis of what's going on with that unit , all I can say is when I worked in that industry my job was to build those heat exchangers , braze , tig weld and fab the aluminum portion of the coil braze the copper line sets , fab up prototype versions for testing new ideas for future products but what you have to deal with out there in the field instead of a model shop environment looks very tuff , great job , thanks .
Nice video Chris thanks for taking us through your day, Stay cool bud!!

Just want to say thanks for making these videos. I do not handle heat very well at all so I don't think I could actually get into HVAC myself, but I really enjoy following you along on the diagnostic process.

Had our filter change company not secure the doors on an rtu twice. Blower door came open, overamped the blower and locked out the unit twice. Annoying to have to cover for your subcontractors. I called and gave them an earful. Trades people who dont even cover their own ass make the rest of us look bad
I know the feeling God bless. Great job like always.

Invest in an e-z-up 10ft by 10ft. Take 5 min to put up but saves you. Makes working in the heat tolerable
You are a perfectionist.
Another great video ......love your work ethic....would have been so easy to just gas and go...👍👍👍👍
Filter companies like that drive me freaking crazy, Bonded Filter Co. In particular. Idiots.

You are correct, it´s the company. Those guys doing the work just get paid little to nothing to do not a second to much work on changing these filters and the customer is satisfied with getting a crap filter with crap install for the least amount of money possible.
Probably the company tells them to get rid of those doors, so they can save time on the next time they change filters.
It´s sad but good maintenance work is always underbid by some schmuck that knows he will get customers that don´t know the difference and just look at the price.
Nice job 👍👌
Oh you're such a hero.

First video I've watched of yours... damn you go into detail! New sub here!
Nice work bud.
Good video Chris. I had a kitchen AC go down, up near the ceiling of the kitchen it was 168 F, you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes, but it sucks when the equipment isn’t maintained properly and now it’s an “emergency”....

I can't take that kind of heat anymore. I did a compressor change out on a Trane unit one day, it was 108 degrees. I was there most of the day, just literally burning up. It was a side discharge supply & return ducts. I had to pull the CFM to get into the condenser to braze my drier, when I jumped up on the duct work, I burned the bottom of my right arm on the hot sheet metal. A bad learning lesson for me.
Nice job, Hope you get the estimate. What a small world we just sold a York 10 ton predator going in on Thursday. Thanks for sharing.
I was just working on a unit similar to that one. I made the mistake and cutting out. The wrong drier and lost all my refrigerant. That sucked.
Me too
Damn.....shit happens !
Oh well ! Take it on to the next PM. LOL
Been there , Done that ! I Think everyone has done it ONCE. it sucks ! its apart of this trades Learning cycle ! Thats When u Graduate From Apprentice 103 to Apprentice 104. 🤣
Haha that's so funny must have been to much sun on your head ur neurotransmitters must have been having a meltdown
Get yourself a small heat mat. Plumbers have them. I have one that I wrap round crucial equipment/cables when I’m soldering close by. Saves melting the wires etc.
Good job.
Press the Test/Reset button to cancel ASCD on these boards. On the newer SSE boards with a display hold down cancel for 4 seconds and then press enter when it says Cancel Timers.
Once you've had heat exhaustion, you'll have it more frequently. Be careful.

Good info
Judging from the circumstances and the symptoms you described, it's likely you were in a state of extreme dehydration. Hope you're drinking *lots* of water while you work. BTW, waiting until you're thirsty is *not* a good indicator (ask me how I know)! Keep up the great videos! :)
GLAD TO SEE THE GLOVES WHILE BRAZING. TIP= I USE A RECOVERY MACHINE TO PUMP REFRIGERANT BACK INTO THE UNIT. I INSTALL A PORT IN THE LIQUID LINE IF THERE IS NONE IF THE SYSTEM IS M-T.

By the way, bring a small plug in electric fan, a cooler and a small tent with ya, it works wonders to beat the heat
I'm digging the content!

I put in 40-50 large multi circuit York units(20+ton) 7-8 years ago for a big and important customer with a bunch of locations... I spent 1/3 of my time on callbacks replacing condensers. They fired us out of frustration though we did not pick or recommend going with York units.

Oh man I used to love working on those fun stuff but not fun when I would change out the leaking condensers I’m from the island so they would corrode fast
A York like that does not get a leak repair. it gets quoted for an evap, which turns into a new unit. Sad, but true. I include everything, including your list and a nice lunch for the guys. Then, after they mull it over for a year, we replace the unit.
Sounds about right...
I just picked up a endoscope/ inspection camera. It would be nice to have on the braze repair.
Swapped out an evap on the Identical York on Thursday, also had multiple leaks as you did in the same spot. Yorks are my least favorite units to swap evaps on by far.
Here in Northern Indiana a 90 degree day is hot. A 100 degree day is a killer. I don't know how you deal with the heat you deal with. Be safe out there. I sure have made a ton of money on York units. Lol

Refrigerant can be insidious. I've never stripped a hermetic compressor myself but I've seen people do it and there will sometimes be refrigerant gas hiding behind things like screws and pins.
I think this was great. You repaired what you could, got the items working, the business gets a quote on replacing the bad items, and now they can decide what to do. If the units no longer worked, then the business shuts down as they can't operate the kitchen at those temps, people are out of jobs and income, the business likely can't replace the equipment fast enough to undo that damage, so they might even go under.
You know part of me imagines some environmentalists ranting and raving about leaving leaking equipment in service and maybe even trying to get politicians to pass some stupid laws to tighten up existing leakage laws (someone bellows mentions 30% annual leakage is the limit at this time .. so push it down to 10% for example). Of course it's always possible the business will keep doing service calls to refill the leaking unit (over and over to differing companies over time) if they aren't at that 30% annual level. Lets say they are over that limit. They might find someone willing to try some welding repairs on the unit that would reduce the leak to within limits and not repair it (oh I bet that angers the environmentalists how DARE you repair it to just within the law). But it's all about balance .. jobs, people, money, environment all have to work together for the best solution. And honestly you put the best solution forth on this job at this point in time. Well done.
Hope you’re feeling better I commented in your last video you were sick! I figured lmao!

If it’s York expect to drag the bottle and gauges with ya from a former cce dealer employee and current tech 9/10 will need at least 1 lb after a Canadian winter 😁
I enjoy you videos and the quality of work performed l don’t understand people trying to second guess you about your out comes ie did you draw down the correct microns? Hey don’t be so judgemental that gentleman do his thing. Thanks
Never on sweat filter drier puts moisture back into the system but you are super mechanic
DEI sells automotive heat shielding you can cut, wrap around wires and such and use little spring clamps to hold. 1000 deg plus
The stpuidity part made me laugh I about pissed my pants lol, I'm at work trying not to be loud lol
Leak sealer works wonders if you just want to make it work until they change the header or the evap coil
Very funny how things work out 2 very similar units I assume the the exact ones... same problem but not leaks at all on the Evap coil on that second one... interesting
We top off charges all the time in the automotive repair industry, particularly if the cost of repair is beyond what the customer wants to spend. A small leak in an evaporator core being a good example. This generally involves removing the entire dash, as well as the heater box to access the core. Needless to say, this is a rather expensive repair. Most customers generally opt for the "top it off so I can just get through the summer" repair. Like you said, you do what you gotta do, and if you don't, the customer will pay someone else who will.

Nice!!!!
Found a leak in the same place on York rtu. Circuit 1 and circuit two u bends overlap and I believe that is causing the issue. Failed design.

I call that a double whammy!!!
Good vid Thanks for posting maintaining 3 units 10 tonners got same issues on one with secondary circuit leaking have to go back leak search btw what brand unit will fit best beside putting back same York I m guessing other brands gonna need adapter no escaping that is it!!?
The filter issue would piss me off too.
