My scripted looping Abelton setup

- In an effort to recreate the album versions of my songs as a solo act, and inspired by the live sets of Jack Garratt, I've discovered the world of scripted looping.
Scripted looping is great because as long as you take the time to program your Ableton session, you can do almost anything in terms of your live set.
Here is a video that explains my new live setup which melds together some of the things I've learned from people like Binkbeats and Anamolie. Below is the list of tutorial videos on CZcams that I used to learn this.
First off, I started with being SUPER inspired by this video:
• Jack Garratt - Worry -... - I had played with a loop pedal inspired by Ed Sheeran but I had never seen the level of looping that Jack was doing and it blew my mind. • Jack Garratt on becomi...
Next, I came across this video of Anomalie walking through his band's Ableton setup which is the first time I got to see inside a live session. • Ableton for Live Bands...
After that I daydreamed about it for a couple years. I started dating Nuya and she and Zeromsum (her brother) were using Ableton and talking about it so eventually I thought I'd give it a shot. There are a bunch of basic looping tutorials on CZcams that I started learning but you can find those by typing Ableton looping into YT.
Nuya and I got asked to play an environmental music festival in Orlando and I decided that would be my first Ableton looping gig and I started down the rabbit hole of advanced looping setups.
The first channel that really helped was FromStudioToStage - I knew I wanted to sync midi controlled DMXis lights to my live set and I came across the video that really helped me imagine what my set could be like. • Ableton Live Controlli... Then I realized Will had a TON of other really useful tutorials which put me in heaven.
One of the biggest was how to route a click track.
• Routing Ableton Live’s...
Also basic midi mapping in Ableton was new to me
• Creating Custom Keyboa...
But the biggest godsend from Will's channel was learning about the IAC driver • Using the IAC Driver w...
I also learned this "Stop track" idea from him • Creating a stop track ... and this really cool method of automatically stopping and moving to the next marker (I didn't show this in the video but I should have) • Creating a pause and g...
Originally I was using the IAC driver that I saw on Will's channel to trigger the Looper plugin in Ableton until my friend Punkowski mentioned that the 'State' parameter for the Looper plugin was able to be automated. I switched to this because it seemed like it was more reliable.
As for the light setup I really got a lot from this video • CREATE A CUSTOM SYNCED...
For that first music festival Nuya and I both programmed our sets with lights but she decided to go the route of session view instead of arrangement view. I saw that Binkbeats was using session view and a lot of other people • Binkbeats: Live Setup but I still have trouble understanding what the advantages of this would be for me given that I'm also doing patch changes and lighting automations which Bink Beats might not be. Here's a cool video of someone explaining Bink's setup • BINK Looper Tutorial -... Here's a cool video that shows his journey • Binkbeats: It's not ab...
It seems like the advantage might be more flexibility in terms of the song structure and being able to quantize. But I'm able to write in vamps in arrangement view and I don't really want quantize now so imo both work great, if there are any advantages I'm missing though, I want to know about them so lemme know :)
I just watched this as I wrote this description but it's a cool update from Jack Garratt on the latest iteration of his live set: • Jack Garratt: How My L...

Bro I appreciate you explained anomalie and binkbeats' script looping in this easy way!!
OMG FINALLY!!!! I'm trying to do the same thing you are and like you, I've been dreaming about it and researching for years. Jack Garratt is incredible. Thanks for posting all this info and for breaking it down!
Yeahhh for sure! I've made some updates since this video. I'm using clyphx pro now. Hmu if you have any questions. My IG is @danemyers
keep going bro, your videos are at an amazing quality, and your getting better at your craft, keep it up.
Hey man your support is so important to me. Thank you for real
Dizang, love this. Your kung fu is strong.
thank you!
thanks man!
Thank you for this video!
very cool - very generous video. thanks mate
You're welcome! I have a new setup now using Clyphx Pro and I need to make an update video!
sorry i came in late to say thank you for sharing! this inspired me for sure as someone who just started playing live ! thank u keep in going !❤
You're welcome! I need to make an update video soon
Thanks. This is a good summary of all techniques. I'm looking what clyphx can do.
Great video
Woaahhh mann this is brilliant
Thank you!! I need to shoot an update!
@@danemyersmusic good work mann really appreciate your efforts 💯🌻
If you wanted to do it in session you just have to use the follow actions on the clips
Great tips, new sub here
Strange location, great video ;) I tried to understand how Binklooper works but it's cryptic for me. I wish someone would teach me how to apply these things irl though, it seems to be so much to setup ... Especially in terms of flexibility, it seems like anytime you wanna try/change something you need to adjust the parameters, kind of would cut the workflow...
Thanks for making this my guy! What mic do you use?
Hey Dane amazing video!!
I have one question, how didi you quantize the drum using your workflow?
Where does your click track work into this?? I imagine there are some settings you have to do to set it up to route it differently. Also, have you ever tried some of this with external synths? If so how was the drift if there was any. Awesome video!!! Thank you :)
Heyy, yes there are some other good videos on click routing. I think this is where I learned
czcams.com/video/JkF0qdfZ200/video.htmlsi=VZCIpFJhOLDJKJVJ
As for external synths, I don't see a reason why that would be a problem but I don't have any experience with it
This is really interesting, using the arrangement view as primary tool. I m wondering how you'd like the "one button looper" though, you could take a look at it. I personally absolutely despise the Ableton Looper. Just the mere fact that you can't see its progress as soon as you switch tracks, is a bad joke by ableton - only getting worse by the fact that you have to use mouse to drag&drop the audio out of it... Tools like clyphx or One Button Looper (m4l) make clip-looping possible.
I've since started using clyphx pro and I need to make a video update. But absolutely!!
@@danemyersmusic ohh yea! i was thinking about if i would need anything out of clyphx' functions, but thankfully the stuff i needed most already got done via m4l plugins. ("fixed clip length" record m4l plugin, and the one button audio-looper m4l plugin) But i ll be interested to see clyphx stuff!
great video dane i love your setup
I was wondering, with all the information going to and from Ableton, how do you get your vocal effects + vocal track to not have any noticeable latency?
Good question, I think it's just about which plugins you use. There are certain plugins that I can't use because they would introduce latency.
thank you for the response. I've been learning more about processing power and seeing how to have a setup like yours. It's always a pain to have to account for processing power and such latency, but youre making it work so it gives me hope. thank you again @@danemyersmusic
@@njea1337 I upgraded my laptop to one of the m1 MacBooks, it made a big difference for the reliability of my live show
What do you think of the Prearranger for Live 12 Suite?
what is the model of that m audio kb ? thanks..!!
Kb? The interface is a Steinberg ur rt I think
