The Copperhead Snake: Dangerous or Misunderstood?

  • Copperheads are some of my favorite snakes, and I'd argue among the most beautiful reptiles in North Carolina, but they get a bad reputation for being mean snakes in the media and boring snakes in the herping community for no reason.
While it's true that they are the most common venomous snake in the Southeast and are responsible for the majority of venomous snakebites, that's just a testament to their adaptability as humans increasingly urbanize the landscape and eliminate species that can't keep up with the rapid change.
These vipers can be found in places where no other venomous snakes seem able to persist - even the highly disturbed, McMansion filled biological desert that we've created and continue to expand upon.
To me, the fact that something so beautiful and cryptic continues to survive and thrive in such a wide variety of conditions is remarkable and exciting, not scary.
Full video featuring this ridiculously beautiful copperhead is up on The Wild Report CZcams right now!

For clarification, you should still seek medical attention if bitten by a copperhead, as with any envenomation from an animal that you are having a negative reaction to. I am not trying to tell you that copperhead bites cannot be dangerous, but the reality is that the venom does have similar potency to bee venom despite copperheads producing a much higher venom yield. Additionally, copperhead venom is hemotoxic, which can lead to tissue necrosis in some cases. Please watch the entire video if you are interested in learning more about these snakes!

    • @TrevorIsCommenting
      @TrevorIsCommenting Před měsícem

And you just putting it forward as if they are not very dangerous is absolutely misinformation. You might be able to argue that the potency drop for drop is more similar to a bee sting, but not only does it have a much higher yield as you said it also inject the Venom much deeper. how many bee stings do you know of that put someone in the hospital that's not already allergic? The answer is virtually zero... Edgar's the percentage of time that you are going to get stung on the foot by a bee and not be able to walk?
The amount of people spreading that copperheads aren't very venomous and aren't really dangerous, is insane. If it's even relatively close to a bee sting I'd love to see you guys let a copperhead bite you hahaha. Your channel would absolutely blow up and you would absolutely have a viral video with minimum of a million views or more... the reality is none of you will actually do it because you all know 100% that getting bit by a copperhead is nowhere near getting stung by a bee. It's not 10 times stronger or 100 times stronger, it's so incredibly stronger to the point that it can be life-changing or even end your life if it bites you. You could sit there and let bees sting you a couple hundred times and you'll be fine, but one bite from that Copperhead is a different story

My personal life experience tells me that these snakes are very dangerous. They are camouflaged so well that when my friend's grandmother got bit by one, 2 other people almost got bit because they couldn't see it even knowing right where it was. She almost lost an arm. It swelled up like a balloon. According to her, the arm was never right again. My uncle, who was logging, got bit by one he had tissue death and lost his hand. The only 2 people I've ever known who got bit, both had a very negative experience with it. I don't think I've ever heard a copperhead bite compared to a bee sting. Maybe my life experience is anecdotal, maybe the bite is not that bad in most cases. But from what I've seen, it can be very devastating even if it does not kill you.

That being said you are right about the camouflage they aren't more aggressive they are just the most stepped on snake and any and all snakes will absolutely bite you when you step on it and break it's bones or accidentally grab it while picking up sticks or brush. In Oklahoma same scenario. Working outdoors around foothills with trees these things encouraged and they are very defensive. Very snappy fast to strike . These snakes will strike multiple times on occasion. I’ve seen this happen when a copperhead is startled and immediately spins into defensive mode. We took a shovel we had and turned it then dropped down in its close position and that snake struck the shovel multiple times swiftly. I’ve found encounters tend to be mostly startling to these snakes because they like hanging out on pathway edges in the woods by paths in leaves as they blend in so darn well

Their venom is similar to bee venom. Keyword "SIMILIAR". Not the same. Both also produce different yield. A Copperhead can produce roughly 43mg of venom, (number will vary on a number of factors) where as a bee can produce roughly .15mg of venom. Thats a difference of nearly 250x. Example Coke and Bang, both similar in that they contain caffeine. However if you were to drink 3-4 cokes in quick order you'd be fine, where as with Bang which has nearly 10x the caffeine content, drinking 3-4 in quick order would cause sever and possibly life threatening health affects. Further more the mortality rate of copperhead bites is less than 1% they are rarely fatal, and most fatalities are the results of allergic reactions to the venom. Example, a man in Missouri in 2014 was reported to have been killed by a Copperhead bite, after he went into anaphylactic shock roughly 3mins after bein envenomated. From 1993-1999 in the state of Missouri there were a reported 596 bites from venomous snakes. None of which were fatal. This man previously mentioned was the first reported death attributed to a Copperhead in the state of Missouri since 1965.
TL;DR Similar dose not equal the same. Less than 1% is still not 0, and while bites are likely not fatal they are painful, and can cause other sever heath affects. Venomous snakes should be treated with the same respect as a loaded gun, and medical attention should be sought if bitten.

What are the symptoms of a copperhead snakebite?
Symptoms of a copperhead snakebite include pain, progressive swelling, skin redness, bruising, and blood blisters. Some people experience nausea, vomiting, weakness, low blood pressure, and bleeding. There might be no symptoms of a copperhead bite, since 20-25% of bites are “dry bites.” That means the snake did not inject any venom. Another 15% of copperhead bites are trivial bites, meaning symptoms are minor. There will usually be two puncture marks following a copperhead snakebite, although sometimes only one. Symptoms evolve over 8-12 hours. Serious systemic effects are rare.

The other day, we were leaving the community garden. Our house is behind the garden, and we formally walk through the woods to and from the garden. My oldest son was in front of me and he said "its a snake" I came around thw corner and there it was a copperhead. It was my first time seeing one in person. We got to chopping. It was litterly laying in wait for someone to get close. I am so thankful my son spotted it because it was almost dark out. Even after it was chopped into pieces it was supper aggressive. His head was bouncing in the air striking and coming towards us. 😮 you have to do what you have to do with those copperheads they're feisty.

I've been in the wild with CH's where I was at one time measuring pine trees and had to hold the tape measure on the ground in the pine litter. The pine needle covered ground was hiding many copperheads. One even crawled over my foot at one time but was so laid back and docile.
When I got back to my Field Station office, there was one at the very edge of the forest and as I got near him he began to shake his tail like a rattle snake letting me know that he was there and NOT to step on him.
    So courteous!!

I've found larger copperheads to be more placid (unless you startle them or step on them) and the juveniles are much more aggressive in their striking. Could be that the smaller ones are more vulnerable to predators.

I was hiking on a trail in North Carolina and I was entering a fairly dense bit of forest. I had one of my toddlers with me and maneuvering that stroller was backbreaking work. Anyway, a sweet little copperhead perched at the edge of a tiny creek gave me all the momentum I needed to turn my ass around and leave. I snapped a picture first, just to prove it was actually a copperhead

Where I live you sometimes see copperheads that were run over by cars in the night. A guy who had been bitten by a copperhead two different times said their bite is very painful, but I think that kind of thing varies from person to person. It's a matter of how your body reacts to the venom. Some people who were bit by a copperhead are stove up for months.

Early last Fall I saw a Kingsnake on my property. This year, June 2024, I haven't seen my Copperhead nor my Timber. I assume the Kingsnake got em. Both were excellent rodent killers.
