  • Today, many people consider Venice a fun tourist destination and not somewhere they would choose to live.
The strong commercial pressure from the tourist industry, and the lack of political interest in the preservation of the city's identity, have caused a shift in how it is perceived: from a magic place rich in art treasures into a sort of overcrowded theme park.
Contrary to this general view, Venice offers a very high quality of life that is slow paced, and based on human relationships and cultural engagement.
Ethical investors and new citizens attracted by this unique way of life, and who are motivated to become part of the Venetian community, could change the destiny of Venice. And they could contribute to saving a great international cultural heritage. Cristina is a Cultural Heritage Expert and a Venice guide. She specializes in offering a multifaceted experience of Venice, given at a slower pace, one that incorporates the history and the stories of this singular city in a way that brings the past alive. She has collaborated with the UNESCO and the Council of Europe in the field of Cultural Heritage and is the author of a number of books and articles on Venice. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Living on any marsh island with it's fragile ecosystem is a privilege that comes with responsibilities. I've been to Venice several times and have visited Italy's major cities from North to South. . Venice is my #1 city to visit in all of Italy. My family immigranted from Treviso (another special town) to US.
