The Band @ Watkins Glen "Too Wet To Work/Jam"

- Two of the only known real soundboard clips from The Band's 1973 Watkins Glen festival show that had a massive storm blow-in mid concert and forced the group off the stage. Levon Helm describes this event in his book, "This Wheel's On Fire".
Garth could still play as his section of the stage was reasonably protected and still had safe power, so while the storm raged he played a crazy little organ jam that "controlled the elements", so to speak and cleared up the storm. Shortly after, the group came back on stage and continued the concert with a nice little jam, also included here.
Photos are from Watkins Glen and the event posters; the color shot of the band onstage is from the Roosevelt show held within that same two-week period. - Hudba
I was at this concert! Was probably the first couple of hundred there and was there for a few days! Just watched it grow to hundreds of thousands! Great memories
I was there with my boyfriend and best friend. I was too young to attend Woodstock, so I am happy I experienced this. I knew it would be the last great musical festival of its kind in my lifetime. I was 15 at the time, and had my learner's permit, so I could drive with a licensed adult in upstate NY. I told my parents I HAVE TO GO, and I'm going with or without your permission. The three of us all piled into my mom's station wagon with camping gear, and I loved every moment, including the standstill traffic. I was amazed that drug vendors could set up large tables and kiosks, and openly sold their wares without the state troopers hassling anyone. It was an experience of a lifetime, and I'll NEVER forget it.
it rained so damm hard the place was one huge mud pit i crawled under a medical trailer and slept through most of it and then i was waken by the band playing "When you Awake'
Life would never be same again. It was the most incredible event i ever attended.
Me too, my older brother, gone now, & I…his widow still has his ticket ☮️
I sheltered under someone’s bus in the rain but loved every minute of it all, great memories
Drove down from Toronto on an acid bender. I’ll never forget crossing the border with a pic of Richard Nixon melting on the wall in customs (The Shape I’m In) they let us through because they couldn’t find any illicit materials. Truly epic one day event with three of the most amazing bands, all of which I can still actually listen to and still enjoy. That remains a day that shaped my musical tastes forever. I’d love to see something of that importance again, but I’d loose tha acid.
I hear that!! 🎉
Five of us left Queens NY in a 68 Chevy Impala a little after midnight and got upstate by 8 am. We had to ditch the car many miles away and walk in, by this time the fences were down and it was still before noon. It was a clear but hot summer day and we copped some double barrel Orange Sunshine and found a space for our beach blanket. Being up all night we fell asleep for an hour or so before the acid kicked in and woke to Bill Graham announcing the Dead at noon who played about 4 hours. All was fun and games and singing and dancing after the Dead and during the Band till those monsterous black clouds came over the mountains. Suddenly heaven turned into a living hell as a dark, windy driving poring rain overcame us. We were drenched in a few minutes and there was nowhere to run or hide, you had to stand there and take it which was pretty difficult while peaking on LSD, ha.
well you jews missed the best
Applaud you for capturing such a huge part of Rock and Roll history!! History says that the Sound Check turned into a 5 or 6 hour jam session/mini concert!
It was fkn amazing! What a weekend!
Excellent moment at :44 when the jerk in the audience shouts "Do something!" and is promptly shutup by thunder and Garth's organ. Owned!
Was there with four friends from Bridgeport, Conn. About a year earlier we were at the rain soaked Pocono Concert. Needless to say we were looking forward to the Glen. Beside the great sound check, the music and the rain , the most lasting memory was the doomed flaming sky diver. What we thought in our drug haze was a great special effect turned tragic when a friend and I came across a weeping young lost girl. She said her brother was one of the sky divers. We lead her to the police trailer compound
I was right in front of the stage for this. Thanks for posting.
I was lucky enough to have gone to Woodstock and the Summer Jam. Went to the Jam with my girlfriend and one of my buddies. I wanted to set up the tent when we got there but they wanted to get right to partying. By the time we did it was dark and we were flying high. It rained hard that night. I remember waking up feeling like my legs were really light. It was because they were floating in water. We had tied the tent off to a fence with the window on the bottom in a drainage ditch! We still laugh about that one.
I was there with friends where we aquired a picnic table,so we were out of the mud somewhat. 600'000 was alot of people. More than Woodstock! Still have the t-shirt.
I was there. Never forget it.
I went up with a few friends, we had gone down to JFK stadium in DC in I think it was May for the warm-up concert for this show. We hijacked some buses that we got from our Catholic High school in Queens, NY - we told the school we were going to a dude ranch or something and then paid the drivers to take us to DC. We all almost got expelled. Then went to this show that summer. My psychedelic youth...miss it so much.
I was there. we pitched a tent about 200 feet from the front of the stage. We walked about 5 miles to get in. We tried to get closer but we just stopped and the cops came out and said just park, so we did. I had just graduated from high school. that summer was the best I had. I saw the dead at least 3 times and the Band 2 times. It seems strange that there was so many people there and only a bit over 5000 have found this vid. an important event in my life
I had met a pretty young lady from Jersey. When the storm hit we headed for a cattle shelter a mile from the stage. We stayed dry and spent that afternoon doing what came naturally. No matter who was around, nobody seemed to care. I can't remember that beautiful girl from Jerseys name. I wish I could, she walked into my life for a couple of days, and then left for home, we never seen each other since. The 70's, JUST WOW!
Walking the race course all night tripp'n, I remember it like it was last week! Good people, good music, good times!!
That's it?
Anyone who could remember this difference in the music between Friday and Saturday were obviously not having as much fun as I had, that's for sure!! I do remember motorcycles, VW buses and other assorted vehicles roaring around the track on Friday, people falling out of the trees during the Dead, watching the really wasted ones being air-lifted out, the "vendors" on "Main St. USA", some with glass display cases) rain during the Band, being chased off the speaker stanchion by an Oriental guy..
This was our wedding reception. 500,000 of our closest friends What a weekend !!
Hi, I was there also. Remember this very part. I trucked from Plattsburgh, NY in an old VW Beetle Bus that broke down between outside of Albany. Hitch hiked the rest of the way and got there several days before no lines or trail of cars. We hung out in tents, just layed down on the floor when it was time to go to sleep. Most people were friendly and share freely anything they had. Very worth while experience. The music was exception the experience was priceless. Peace.
I was 8 years old and living in Millport, NY when this concert went on. They all had to go past my house on RT 14 to get to watkins glen. Omg the amount of people was overwhelming. People camping in our back yard. Dad chasin em away with a shot gun. It really is a pity that there isnt any footage of the concert. This was 1 1/2 the size of woodstock and it never got the recognition.
I was there!
I was there with 2 friends hitched from Wildwood NJ
What a time what great music especially the Band
I was there too. I was 21 and couldn't believe the crowd or the damned rain. Friday's sound check concert was so much better than the actual Saturday thing.
I woke up Saturday morning & stood to stretch & nearly passed out from the sight of people in every direction as far as I could see❗️☮️
I was there that long wet weekend at Watkins Glen. Love this tape of the rain jam. Thanks for posting.
What a gem!! Thank you
Watkins Glenn=sound check Friday night of Warf rat.Rest was fun. That was magic.Go to the tape.Hey 73'.Man are we lucky to have grown up then.
This is one of the few things I recall from the show. Was weird & very cool at the time. thx for posting!
50 years ago, today. Shared a tarp with some nice people!
i was there, an incredible memory.
i was there- i was 19, working in a restaurant in buffalo, i hitchhiked, got a ride from a schoolteacher, she already had 2 other hippies in her car, we had to walk at least a mile from where we parked, the fences had been torn down, slept in her sleeping bag that night, that was the last sleep i got, just wandered around, watching everything turn to mud, saw e.m.t.'s picking up people passed out in the mud like they were cordwood. i have to find more pictures, recordings from this fest!
The night before during the sound check, I was yanked into a nice couple tent during the storm and partied all night! Lots of acid, wine , weed! Good times at 15yrs old, hitched from North Jersey a week before with 40bucks!
I have this too! Fabulous! Thank you.
I was there ! I'm lovin these videos !
I was on thè lighting crew.....Ton Field Associates....there for a week...the Dead guys had a free barbq....we had a fixed up VW bus with bed etc. I builf, wired and set all spots (7) on the tower to the left of the s f age.....my buddy Gene Yott was to the right of yhe stage.....some idiots started clombing our tower but 😊were "loved" down by Bill Grahm on a mic from the stage calling on the crowd to "love" them down as Garth improvised Raindrops and assholes keep dropping from the sky.....they came down.....we had a great time....found coiples in love in the crowd, a few nudies, etc.....but the jam the night before and the absolutely insane day of the concert were amazing..... TY he improvised duets and jams with intermingled members playing each others songs, et etc......AWESOME experience!!!
I was 18then...lost the people that I went with and ended-up in a tent with some young boy and had a blast...had to hitchhike to western Pa the next day...what a trip!
I was there! Thanks for the memory.
Wow!! thanks for posting this, it brings back memories! I was 20 at the time and we had brought some mesc and killer herb. I didn't even remember the storm. Stayed dry in our tent. People tried to turn it into another Woodstock ( I couldn't get a ride for that one:-( . Not quite, but there was approx 700K people there. (so they say).
Great concert met a lot of cool heads. I went with my sister, met a nice guy but I told him I just didn't feel the same. Boo hoo , whatever. I did run into my future hubby 3 days after. Fate to go there and have such a great time. Rained like a son of a bitch. Loved it!
I was there, too! Also come down from Plattsburg NY in a van that also broke down, but it was on the way home. Had to hitchhike home. A prisoner had escaped and they were searching all the cars. Kind of creepy re-entrance to the real world after such an awesome festival. A car pulls over to pick us up on the freeway late at night and it turned out to be a friend of ours returning from a trip to NYC. Great coincidence! Great concert!
A weekend I will not ever forget.... especially the falls at the bottom of the hill.. first shower I had in three days....
OMG I remember the MUD!!! It was amazing! My dad had the Best Pic of me I was 12 just miserable wet cold dirty leaning my chin on my hand streaks of rain cutting through the grime on my cheeks. But the music made a life long impression on me and i knew I was a part of something big.
I was there right in front it was an awesome show
This had to be awesome! I'm only a 40 year old head -born too late , can't say it enough.!I've been there just hangin out but never for a show or race- has to be amazing!
i found it !! i knew some one had to have a clip of this i was 16 with my older sister her hubby and son and my boy friend we got high on acid and walked amoung the "people on saturday and i sure do remember that rain we slept in a old pick up truck ya you could not hear them to well it was a tripin time i never will forget it
0:17 "Keep getting... shocked!"
I was there, my brother found us in the middle of the crowd, with a head full of windowpane. Best show by the Band I ever saw. Robbie was smokin hot, jumpin around the stage. The Dead---meh. No Pigpen. Still fun. Good times.
I was there too !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!........I think.
We (14 "Free camp" dwellers) hopped a freight train from Jasper BC. Got as far as Edmonton.............. then a VW van (thanks Jack) got us the rest of the way. Unbelievable experience. Should have seen the border crossing!
I love this! Thank you. That picture of Levon behind the drum kit is from Roosevelt Stadium the following show. Still cool!
WAS THERE NEXT TO STAGE...WISH HAD VIDEOE
memories!!! I was at this concert
I Still got the BALL AND BOOGIE T shirt, It was ''WAS FAR FUCKEN OUT MAN" I saw some crazy shit there man!
One hell of a weekend. Was 17 at the time, got there friday afternoon for the sound checks and left saturday night. Remember the scene at the waterfall, lot of skinny dippers
Summer Jam 73 I was 20 and will never forget this one, I;m surprise that there isn't more footage from this show. They said that there was 750,000 people there, only one death ,it was one of the sky divers that jumped during the show with flairs and he caught on fire. My buddy and I got there acouple of days before the show to help start the party and party we did, there for lost of a few brain cells.
Seems like yesterday, wish it was!!!!!!!!!!!
I was there too. That storm was biblical, lightning strikes around the perimeter. I recorded a tape from 1/4 mile away with a crappy cassette recorder, tape is long gone now.
@bluesman341 I remember the parachute guy but not the fire---but hey-that was quite the day/night!
wow - - only - - 3 bands total - - played at Watkins Glen outdoor festival on July 28 1973 - - wow - only 3 bands - and they brought in 600,000 people - wow - unreal - rain and all happened just like it did at The Woodstock Festival in August of 1969 - - The Allman Brothers - - The Grateful Dead - - and - - The Band - -
@jerseygirl1125 Yeah it was real hot during the Grateful Dead set--then it rained and cooled everything off. Amazing day and amazing jam at the end. .
I was there but a couple of my friends were stuck at Ft. Drum and almost went AWOL to attend.
holding that blanket overhead, smoking crazy front row mud
STILL GOT TICKET
that lightning strike could not have come at a more perfect time
I was there too! Love and Peace and NO MORE WAT!!!
I was there. 19 years old. From Fort Erie, over the Peace Bridge into Buffalo and we was GONE. Raindrops the size of quarters. The Band was jammin the intro to Chest Fever to the oncoming storm. Sureal.
It was one hot as shit weekend in upstate NY.
Anybody out there know of any footage of the show?? Hit me if you do, will ya?
What I would love to have and to hear is the other 3 sections of the day's performances, the Grateful Dead (isn't that Donna Godchaux in the picture of Jerry onstage?), the Allman Brothers, and the jam that ran long into the night when they all got together at the end.
I had just turned 21 the previous spring, and it was the summer between my junior and senior years at college in upstate New York.
@GDguitarplayer: The second picture was not taken at Giants stadium. Giants stadium wasn't built until 1976. This concert was in 1973.
I went up with my buddies from Boston-I don't remember too much--We were tripping our asses off-I remeber the guy in the parachute on fire--(was that this concert?)) I was ripped--then it rained-then I lost my car- for 18 freakin' hours I was walking the streets looking for my car-when I found it all of my friends were in it sleeping--
I would have liked to have gone. But I did go to the California Jam at Ontario motor speed way . There was like 300.000 people at that. That was back in the 70s to. All was loved almond bros.
stay in california this is the great northeast
california sucks new york rules
I was there went up with 63lbs of jelly and 63lbs peanut butter worked for aim american indian movement help put up the stage greatest time of my life did the with Dickie Betts and his guitar the red one, wow
Where her shocked parents were. It was her brother who was killed. How can you ever forget such an event.
What tragedy so unforgettable. I hope there are some bright memories to color such darkness~
The picture of the Band that is being used is not from Watkins Glen. It was taken a week later at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City NJ where the Band opened for the Dead.
Somebody didn't read the video description. :-)
Ha! I didn't click on the "show more" icon to read the rest.
and the band was the best by far
honesty period not even close
Does anyone hear the Cant Stop riff in the jam that they have?
if they tried to do a concert like this now, there would be crime, muggings, rapes, fights etc. During these times people tried to help each other out & just enjoy the music. So sad that now everyone is out for themselves & you have to be on guard to go anywhere. Wish I could go back in time.
the second picture in is from Giant Stadium the day after Watkins Glen. Still cool though.
I was 16 then, me and 5 others hitch hiked up there, and 'justa1883' was right, the sound check was better than the show, the Dead did like a 4 hour non-stop jam, so did the Allman Bros and The Band, but not as long as The Dead. There was a one lane road from town going to the site that never seemed to move, people pulled their cars over and walked up, we walked down to town, what a scene, the locals were freaked out...lol, everything was sold out, but they had mountains of bottled water on site
grateful did no comparison
I was 3&1/2 and i remember how hot it was they were using fire hoses to cool everyone off,. I was on top of a friend of my moms shoulders, but i do remember it and i was so happy that day, just really hot, lol
Got there 2 days before and left 3 days after. Made a little donation to Mickey Hart.
(Guy in the Land Rover)... Whatta fuckin' rush that all was!!!!!!
is this the show where levon went to sing and he got shocked and went blind for the whole song?haha
@88888Rob---I just checked it out--we thought the guy had flares attached to his feet--Google said he jumped from the plane with a lit stick of dynamite to drop in the field ---it said he failed to realize that the dynamite would travel at the same speed as he was falling--it blew up blowing him into little pieces--!!! wow that sucks---aerial dynamics 101---
Always found it so weird that there'd be no footage of the Summer Jam. Pity.
my dad was there haha
@88888Rob---He went right over our heads--we were on acid-everyone in the immediate area was clapping--Maybe I can find the story on You tube--bummer.. But we had a great time --we drove up from Boston in 3 car loads--You never hear much mention made of it--it was huge---i heard 750,000 peeps roughly--windowwwwww pane. :)
My uncle was at that show. He claims that he slept through the Dead. I didn't ask what really happened.
they came back and played when u awake i was sleeping under a medical trailer staying dry when i heard them playing it was time to wake up
u needed to wake up you jew
there was the band and then everyone else they were far superior to the other two always and lifetime by far
8 10
Kto tu przyszedł z Radio 357?
Woodstock was a cool, gentle and comfortable event compared to this disappointment, for me. Had to Park a gazillion miles from site, torrential rain then mud . Witnessed the Dead set- not a memorable one- and then 15 minutes of the Band before the deluge happened. Packed our stuff soaking wet, did the long walk back to our van and went home.
Who's asking for "a little bit louder"? Sorta sounds like Robbie... but I'm pretty sure he's not miked.
Not sure?.
they were so superior to the other two bands and all other bands
* WAR .... lol ;-0
sorry but the dead and the alma's didn't come close to theses guys period
