  • The UN has dubbed 2023 the year of #millet, much to the delight of #India, where the grain is indigenous. One of the oldest cereals known to human civilization, varieties of millet are now taking center stage in the fight against #climatechange and global hunger, and as the Ukraine war has led to shortages of wheat. While wheat and rice are the primary cereals grown and consumed in India, the government is pushing for a millet revolution to mitigate future distress caused by climate change. The country hopes to build a strong international market pull for the ancient seed.

World Economic Forum had an article on this issue in May 2022 ('Here's how one ancient crop is helping to fight India's water and food crisis'). Key takeaways:
    - Millet is a heat tolerant crop that offers a profitable alternative to rice as it does not require much water to grow
    - However, the yield per area is 6x lower than rice, so
    - millet is not a universal solution, but it should be part of a wide variety of sustainable crops grown to help ensure food security
    - With 1.4 billion people to feed, and heatwaves set to become more common, the country clearly needs more sustainable agriculture
    - Rice and wheat crops use lots of precious groundwater, which is fast being depleted
    - Millet is a nutrient-rich superfood, with high content of starch and proteins
    - Heat tolerant millets offer a great alternative to rice as they don’t need much water, are pest resilient, have a very long shelf life and are profitable

Millets are the way to go in a drought environment. Many countries such as Spain whose cuisines are meat and dairy centric should move away from animal agriculture (i.e., feeding animals with crops grown with water, then using water for their drinking and cleaning up, to slaughtering them eventually) to one that incorporates drought tolerant crops such as millets. There are a lot of fruits too that do not require a lot of water such as pineapple, dragon fruit etc.

I love how they keep finding new ways to push the climate change lie. As if flooding and erosion hasn’t always been an issue humans dealt with.
