Rick, I really love your style of playing the bowed psaltery. It's so calming, & I think it shows the BP off at what it does best. When played fast, BPs can sound sorta scratchy & scrapy. But whenever I hear you play, you seem to be able to steer your playing--whether lead or back-up, leisurely or more peppy--to be in the BP's "sweet spot" tone-wise. Really enjoy all of your videos & the comparatively mellow sound of your instruments!
This is the first bowed psaltery video that hasn't been physically painful to listen to-- and I love the bowed psaltery (I own two!). Thanks for playing and for posting.
Very nice duet. I play dulcimer and just acquired a bowed psaltry. I have something to aspire to. Thanks. Oh, I play the pipes as well (Just saw my profile picture)
Hey Psalteryman.... or anyone out there...I'm looking for help/ tips on how to best mic a bowed psaltery !! Would appreciate any help on that. This video is awesome !
One thing about it: every time I listen to bowed psaltery the instrument never sounds good by itself - it's tinny whiny sound only sounds well when accompanying other instruments. In midaeval times, did it sound any better using gut strings instead of steel strings?
It's not a medieval instrument, SS. Best evidence we have places the first bowed psalteries in Germany around 1920, although similar instruments were around before that. One aspect of his playing that Rick has here is that his instrument is tuned lower than a lot of the easier-to-find models.
Brings tears to the eyes of this old sailor/southern boy.Great!!.
Uma bela canção tocada por um instrumento diferente parabéns
