DIY SNARE DRUM out of a springform pan

  • I built a 10 inch pancake snare out of a cheap aluminum springform pan. It's far from perfect, but it's definitely usable.
    The mics i used for the demo were just cheap old t.bone tom mics clamped to the snare (top & bottom) and the cheapest behringer small diaphragm condencer mics as overheads.
    Now that I have a functioning DIY drum set, I'm gonna post some cover songs and music to show these instruments in a musical context. And the next DIY videos are going to be on synthesizer stuff. bleep bloop

    Sounds nice! The cymbals also sound better than I'd expect from how they look.

    Foak yeeeeeeeeah!!! Best effing drumkit ever! Please do a complete series on your drumset and mics! The snare man! SNARES FOR EVERYONE!! Seriously, sounds tight and controlled. The cymbals are Also cool! I once had to make my own ghetto kick pedal cause I didn’t have any money then 😂 your diy hihats sounds nicer than the ones I had, for sure. They sounded so awful that I had to cover them with a towel to dampen the horrific ear destroin’ frequencies. Thanks for the inspiration 👌

    That drum sounds way better than it has any right to. Very cool. I'm digging the cymbals, too.

    This is a very pleasing sound. I've been looking around for a snare sounding practice pad and, after reviewing many, this is my favorite one, by far.

    I find it funny that the cymbals sound better than some of the higher priced cymbals

    I didn't expect that the drum would use actual heads, rims, and snare wire. Didn't occur to me for some reason

    Hey Lauri, this sounds amazing! Could you possibly tell me how you made the hi hat, was it just a piece of sheet metal and if so what thickness?

    • @LAURISDIYCHANNELTV
      @LAURISDIYCHANNELTV  Před 2 lety +3

      Hey, thanks! 🙏 yeah they are just 0,5mm thick sheet metal, 8” in diameter. And i hammered a bell by placing the sheet metal on a metal coffee cup and hammering with a ball-peen hammer. I’m working on a video about the hihats and cymbals right now, it will be the next video or the one after that!

      @@LAURISDIYCHANNELTV awesome thanks so much man! I'm working on quite a few make shift instruments of my own at the moment, my main one is a guitar tube amp I've managed to put together from some scrap tape recorders. I'm planning on making some x-hats for a foot drum set after that so your advice is going to save me some learning curves. Look forward to your next video!

    What a beautiful sound! But, I want to know the length of the screw

    • @LAURISDIYCHANNELTV
      @LAURISDIYCHANNELTV  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks! The only screws i had were a bit long for this and you can see in the video that they sort of stick awkwardly out of the bottom. It would be best if the screws were about the same lenght as the height of the drum, so with my pan it would be maybe around 3 inches

    • @LAURISDIYCHANNELTV
      @LAURISDIYCHANNELTV  Před 2 lety +1

      But the long screws are also fine, it doesnt make a difference in the sound!

    Can you link or specify the hardware used? I've got 3 cake pans right next to me lol. Just mainly the rod and bolt dimensions.

    • @LAURISDIYCHANNELTV
      @LAURISDIYCHANNELTV  Před rokem +1

      I dont wave links to these cause i bought them a long time ago, but the tention rods are regular rods ment for toms or kicks. They are actually too long for the depth of the drum, but it still fits a snare stand so i dont mind! And the threads of the rods are regular M6 threads and the nuts are regular M6 nuts!

    • @LAURISDIYCHANNELTV
      @LAURISDIYCHANNELTV  Před rokem +1

      The rods are 11cm long, but the whole drum is 7cm in depth haha

    • @LAURISDIYCHANNELTV
      @LAURISDIYCHANNELTV  Před rokem +1

      You should measure the pan you are using with the heads and hoops on it and get tension rods that are about the same lenght! So for my drum 6-7cm rods would be ideal

    • @LAURISDIYCHANNELTV
      @LAURISDIYCHANNELTV  Před rokem +1

      And of course you could use any bolts and nuts instead of actual drum tension rods, but that will make tuning the drum a bit more annoying

    Could you tell me where you got the nuts for those tension rods?

    • @LAURISDIYCHANNELTV
      @LAURISDIYCHANNELTV  Před 2 lety +1

      They are just regular M6 nuts from a local hardware store! But i did have some other older tension rods, that werent quite the same size as M6 so i guess the drum screws and lugs might sometimes be different! 🤔

    • @hitherescotty
      @hitherescotty Před 2 lety

      @@LAURISDIYCHANNELTV thanks. I know DW in particular has funky tension rods. I will just bring my tension rods to a hardware store and see what works.

    Does the shell warp?

    • @LAURISDIYCHANNELTV
      @LAURISDIYCHANNELTV  Před 2 lety

      Warp how? You mean because the aluminum is so soft as material? There is no problem with it because theres equal pressure from both heads and theres no lugs or any parts that are screwed to the shell
