The prehistoric looking tapir resembles the pig, the anteater, the elephant, the rhino, and the hippo. Found in South America and Southeast Asia’s rainforests, they’re shy, solitary herbivores that come out at night to eat after resting during the day. There are four species of tapirs that have prickly fur, 14 toes, and long, rubbery snouts.
The quiet tapir is surprisingly fast and agile. They’re very good at navigating the forest and rugged terrain. They’re especially at home in the water, and are excellent swimmers. Tapirs can become quite large and bulky as they know how use their strong, rubbery nose to obtain leaves, roots, fruit, and aquatic vegetation. After a 13 month gestation period, tapir mothers give birth to a single calf. These young are dark brown, streaked and spotted with yellowish white for the first 6 months.
Although untamed, tapirs have a tender, emotional side. They symbolize empathy, prosperity and longevity. When you want strength and wisdom to forge ahead, call on the spirit of the tapir. Visit our website to learn more and get a free power animal reading. Thank you and have a great day.
