- This morning I am taking a stroll along Littlehampton Harbour.
Littlehampton is a seaside resort and pleasure harbour, and the most populous civil parish in the Arun District of West Sussex, England. It lies on the English Channel on the eastern bank of the mouth of the River Arun.
I walk from the end of the harbour wall towards the lifeboat station, early in the morning as the town prepares itself for another day welcoming day trippers and holiday makers.

My lovely home town, the Beatles had Breakfast in the Dinky Doo diner once , my friend was waiting tables and kept the leftover crumbs in a shoe box for years!
Lovely to see a town on the coast before it’s fully awake!
I love early morning walks!
So enjoy your walks around Sussex .
Enjoyed that little stroll
Great video! Not been to Littlehampton for a while but would like to visit again to ride the town's miniature railway.
Littlehampton looked so tranquil in the early morning light, thank you.
My pleasure. I love arriving at places before the crowds get there. I wish I had captured fishing boats going out.
I think the RNLI were providing lifeboats well before 1967 ! The RNLI were formed in 1923 and there were independent lifeboats before then. In 1967 the first inshore lifeboat Blue Peter 1 was stationed at Littlehampton. This was followed by several other Blue Peter lifeboats - Blue Peter III is preserved in the Historic Lifeboat collection in Chatham.
Thankyou for a very pleasant video. I got furhter up Aron with a 16' homemade catarmaran than any other boat in 10 years. African Queen stile. Nearly sank outside the yacht club, nice old chaps. I think 3 nearly died laughing. One of the best little seaside villages there is. Changed a bit though.
fastinating bloke. lovely delivery. very informative.
Thanks very much.
Very interesting li
Really enjoyed watching this.
Very interesting:)
My first ( now, of many ! ) Bald Explorer video ... found as looking for footage of Littlehampton... lovely walk along the Arun. ThankYOU !!!
Yes, I did enjoy this little walk, very much
Thanks you for watching and letting me know you enjoyed it too. Much appreciated.
How lovely to have a stroll along by the river. Thank you!
I did that a while ago, but it was a lovely morning as I recall.
@@RichardVobes I missed it first time round, so I was pleased to see the link in your 'Sussex Border Walk - Part Eleven: Nineteenth Century Littlehampton' today.
What a lovely little stroll through a coastal town. Loved the history & geography lesson on Little Hampton you gave as you walked too. Thanks for another great vid Richard!🛤⚓⛵
Thanks so much - I almost forgotten I had recorded that one.
Grew up there. Left as a 16 year old in 1974. Very interesting. I hope to have a visit one day.
Very interesting. I was there in 2017 shortly before you did your walk. My grandparents lived there from the 1920s to the 1960s. It's a lovely seaside town.
Very cool!
wow we are being spoilt with all these lovely walks and potted history
jane Ainsley Glad you enjoy them.
Hi Richard a great Video I Live in Littlehampton 5mins walk from the beach have you ever been to Eastbourne its nice there too,
Very nice and intresting place.
Absolute best ice creams you can buy along the river front there... They've done it already up in the last few years and it's a really nice spot. We always visit in the summer.
Oooh - I must go back and try the ice-creams. Thanks for the tip!
Very nice little walk. I know that facts are not your thing, but Port is from Portugal.
I was born in Littlehampton in 1946 and lived there till I was 43, (You actually passed within 50 yards of the house I was born in) . Harbour Park used to be Smarts Amusements, and before that it was owned by Butlins. (I worked there in the early 60s). I also worked on the Littlehampton Pilot Boat in the 70s/80s. To correct a geographical error, Southampton is actually about 50 miles West Littlehampton (not 20 miles East ;) ). Nice early morning video. :)
Also the boat and beach scenes from the inbetweeners was filmed there
A lovely film. Sussex is such a county of contrasts: Gatwick, Crawley, Chichester, Brighton, Bognor, Rye, Winchelsea, the South Downs (National Park) and Selsey Bill.
Thank you - and yes, it sure is. That why I love to explore it. :)
There's a place in Devon called Lydford gorge. I've been there once before and it was a beautiful walk.. You need to pay to get in however unless you have national trust membership I think.
Gonna GetYer Oooh sounds lovely. I will have to check it out!
The real question is when we will get to see the Vobes mime and juggling act?
Kevin Predragovich ah yes. I may have to break into entertainment mode.
Nice little video that does Littlehampton proud, for information, Southampton is to the west not the east. It was called the Children's paradise as it had a gently sloping sandy beach in the 20's with a broad expanse of greensward behind it for the children to play on at high and other times. The lifeboat station was given the first Blue Peter Boat for inshore work in 1967, the Country had seven in the end, the first lifeboat in the UK was in 1785.. Mr Vobes please come back and do some more videos there is lots more to see in this Unique Family Seaside Resort.
Thanks Terry for the corrections. I realised the west/east remark in the edit but it was too late by then. Thanks for the other snippets. It adds to the interest. I will come back. What I need is someone to show me round! :)
Hi Richard, glad you took it so well, I chair the newly formed Littlehampton Heritage Group, am a Committee Member of the Littlehampton Civic Society, founded the Littlehampton Charter Group to protect our Leisure facilities, basically an all round interfering so and so. However when you do come back I can ask one of my Colleagues to assist you at any time and we would look forward to doing that. If you ever have an hour spare on the first Friday of any month, the Civic Society has a Coffee morning gathering where we have a special speaker and would welcome you to come along and enlighten us about your colourful liife and show a video or two. I can be accessed on terryellislondon@yahoo.co.uk
Terry Ellis Great. I will drop you an email.
Thanks Terry. I will send you an email - it sounds like a lot of fun!
Thanks
Britain's first life boat in 1967?
First Blue Peter life boat.
A very nice morning walk 👌👌🤗
Which month and what time in the morning did you shot this video ?
It was August 2017 - at about 7am I think.
@@RichardVobes okay 😊 nice 👌 thanks !
Another interesting little port town. It would be fun to go water up to London. Do they offer river boat tours like that?
You can no longer get from Littlehampton to London, although you used to be able.

Just found this as I had the same thought :)
There was a teacher at my old school who rowed from littlehampton with his dog as far up the Arun as he could. When he got about as far as rudgwick, he switched to a canoe! I think he got as far as horsham!
We’ve had lifeboats since the Victorian era! They used to be made up of rowing crews……🙏
Places like my native Fleetwood , town like Brighton ,Worthing And Littlehampton after the COVID-19 outbreak ,I think there
Time will come again as Seaside resort in England , because people might not travel abroad .from Tom
Let's hope so. Thanks for watching.
One of the few ports in the south that seems to be lacking a formidable fort to defend its self against the French
I believe they are currently uncovering the fort on the west side of the port actually!
@@RichardVobes Thanks Richard, I wondered about that I thought it was just a gun battery but not stopping to look when I should!
When he points the camera south from the end of the pier and talk of the sand dunes, what you're actually seeing is the ruin of a fort built to guard against Napoleon.
You mean like this one? www.littlehamptonfort.co.uk/
I`ve walked this many times and apart from the river and beach, there is not much to see here.....
anyone likes walking I recommend the I.o.W. Bembridge - Whitecliife over the hill and down to Sandown, next day walk Sandown to Ventnor.....
Its very lovely first thing in the morning!
I must remember that!
Walk from Whitecliffe to Sandown over the hill to the south of the camp site there, stunning walk on IoW.
Littlehamptons bollocks... Id hate to live there. I know what it's really like... It probably looks good in the daytime. Anywhere else is better imo... Not sure about wick... Or Bognor though...
