Nice bikes but id recommend a hybrid. You'll get more speed and they can still go off the road and maintain traction.
My department has 3 bikes and the prior bike officers are no longer at our department. Me and a sergeant just got uniforms to start our bike patrol back up. It’s good to see how other departments operate.

I love the shirts i am looking for something to go into in the summer when i ride and when i ride in the summer on hot days it can get pretty hot in a vest and a helmet. I try to stay seen as much as Possible. The area that i am riding my self has no bike lanes no lit areas. I have looked at different reflective light wait polo shirts like you guys to have its all about being seen in not well lit areas. Yes i am lit up like a Christmas tree on long rides.

The "farthest right of the lane" is absolutely not the safest for a cyclist because it gives no room to make a correction if there is a sudden obstruction-storm drain, animal, bad pothole, glass, car that doesn't stop at a stop sign, etc. Also, with street parking, that's the door zone! If you want to get hit by a car door, go ahead and ride "the farthest right in the lane."
The best rule of thumb that I've heard is to ride with as much space on your right that you would like a car to give you on your left. That gives you space to avoid obstacles, and when cars pass too close (as they usually do), it gives you space on your right to avoid getting hit by a mirror. It also communicates to motorists that cyclists need that space! If you don't give yourself that space, why would a driver?
Michigan law requires cyclists to ride as far to the right as possible. If there are obstructions then you can ride left of them.
With all due respect, that is not the law in Michigan. The law states that cyclists should ride as far to the right as PRACTICABLE. As far to the right as POSSIBLE would mean that we're riding in gutters, storm drains, and the door zone. What I've written above is well within the law in Michigan! I am concerned that the ELPD isn't familiar with this aspect of the law...could you pass it along?
I've ridden thousands of miles in Michigan and I've never had a police issue riding the way that I do, but it worries me that I'll get stopped someday and seem argumentative when I'm really just trying to educate! Spread the word!
Section 257.660a of the MVC states:
A person operating a bicycle upon a highway or street at less than the existing speed of traffic shall ride as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway except as follows:
(a) "When overtaking and passing another bicycle or any other vehicle proceeding in the same direction."
(b) "When preparing to turn left."
(c) "When conditions make the right-hand edge of the roadway unsafe or reasonably unusable by bicycles, including, but not limited to, surface hazards, an uneven roadway surface, drain openings, debris, parked or moving vehicles or bicycles, pedestrians, animals, or other obstacles, or if the lane is too narrow to permit a vehicle to safely overtake and pass a bicycle."
(d) "When operating a bicycle in a lane in which the
traffic is turning right but the individual intends to go straight through the intersection."
(e) "When operating a bicycle upon a 1-way highway or street that has 2 or more marked traffic lanes, in which case the individual may ride as near the left-hand curb or edge of that roadway as practicable."
My man.... no one gives this much of a shit. I doubt they enforce that law unless the biker is impeding traffic.
I think you're definitely right about the enforcement piece. I'm more concerned that the ELPD doesn't know the law, so I was passing along that information.

I've been watching 1st amendment auditors alot
recently and have seen very little transparency in most police agencies.
How do you feel about what they are doing? I think if every agency was as open as
yours it would put them out of business?
Another problem 1st Am Auditors have is lodging legitimate complaints of
police violating Constitutional Rights. They seem to
run into the thin blue line on every complaint. Not only do they have trouble
making complaints, but even the DA's make the complaint process impossible.
Could you do a Vlog of your complaint process?
Every 1st Ammendment Auditor has been arrested for videoing the police.
Does your agency do this or have you evolved and honor their rights.
There are good and bad auditors and I'm sure you have seen both.
There are good and bad cops and I'm sure you have seen both.
What you are doing will bring out the good in both and maybe weed out the bad.
Now that I have the other side to watch as well, I look forward to more Vlogs.

Got my IMPBA certification a few weeks ago
I’m looking for any info on implementing a bike patrol. I want to talk to my captain on implementing it for a special law enforcement program we run, and I feel it would be an ideal, cost effective patrol vehicle that’s ideal for our smaller limited areas being parks. Large enough where foot patrol isn’t practical to get to all areas, but small enough cars aren’t always practical and golf carts are slower.

neither one of the bike patrol officers came to a complete stop at the stop sign .... which is a bit awkward for the Police Department
