    Right now I'm more worried about outsourcing then I am IA taking over.

    • @juliadrach

      I feel that with AI it's going to be the same as outsourcing. Companies with play around, lose revenue and will go back to the way it was before. My employer (a rather large one in the US) still employs an overseas company, and yet my job is to literally audit and fix their work :)

    • @jenniferj939
      @jenniferj939 Před rokem

      @@juliadrach Very true, my company is doing a lot of outsourcing. A lot of my job (I'm still working on the billing side of things) is correcting and auditing their work. Which keeps me quite busy. Answering their questions and completing what they aren't allowed to do yet. I do worry eventually they'll go fully to outsource.

    • @douglasfugate1755
      @douglasfugate1755 Před rokem

      Same here. Since it takes CMS a couple of years to audit stuff, by the time they start looking at the coding that the outsourced coders are doing the cost savings hospitals think they are getting suddenly go away when they suddenly have to refund or cms recoups past claims for incorrect coding. Saw that a lot with a company they brought into my health care facility to handle our "old and ancient lists". Lot of money down the tubes with very little to show for it.

    Please don't block me, I'm not a troll LOL! But also not a coder or even in the medical field. However, I am a problem solver who loves to improve processes and I have a very close friend who is a coder and is trying to improve her productivity. I have a clear understand of the process, but I don't have the necessary experience or medical knowledge, or coding knowledge to speak to specifics of the job.
    I mentioned Ai and how I think LLM's (Large Language Models) will be a part of Medical Coding, and some quick research shows it's already a part of Medical Coding. I agree with your statement that it will not replace coders in the near future, but it will shift toward coders becoming more like auditors.
    I especially like your post "Ai will not replace you. A person using Ai will.".......absolutely spot on and this is the message I'm trying to get across to my friend. The question is, how can a coder integrate ChatGPT4, Google BARD, or even Bing....or all three....into your daily workflow? I know that Amazon and Apple are working on voice models that would allow a person to interact with LLM's in the same way that they use Alexa and Siri, I can see that being especially helpful for coders.
    My question to you and the many coders who might see this. How can you use ChatGPT, BARD, or Bing today? I can't imagine it is completely useless, there has to be a way to streamline at least one of the many tools currently in use.
    Lastly. We've all seen how important a prompt when using a program like ChatGPT and others. Have any of you played with various prompts to see if you could improve the response? I think some videos on the subject would be awesome.

    • @Knifymoloko
      @Knifymoloko Před rokem

      Out of curiousity I have actually asked Bard and Bing some CPT/ICD-10-CM questions. It gets them correct about 80% of the time. When it is wrong I inform it how it is wrong and it 'learns' this new information and retains it. I verify it by asking it the same question. While doing this I was seeing firsthand how valuable a tool this can be for my own productivity/learning. I'm heading for my certification test in a couple weeks and I do welcome how AI will compliment the profession in general.

    Victoria, this was a great topic to cover. I was hoping you’d cover the billing side as well. AI is a concern in just about every industry right now but so far, it’s only been speculation as to how it might affect the job industry. My thoughts on this are that AI will be a great tool but every tool needs an operator. I believe coding will take on more of an audit and compliance role in the years to come, which I’m more interested in anyway.

    • @vincentsicca
      @vincentsicca Před rokem

      AI, and more specifically RPA doesn’t need a babysitter (unattended automation) and with attended automation only needs one or a small handful of attendee developers to replace a workforce of hundreds or more.
      When a bot hits a roadblock and can’t move forward, it only takes a couple of clicks or a new workflow process to be introduced by a developer and the automation continues - around the clock and without any errors versus having a large workforce with human error, salaries, benefits and retirements for a company to account for.

    • @musicmaker85
      @musicmaker85 Před rokem

      @@vincentsicca Good points indeed. I don’t pretend to understand the logistics of how it works. I think the next conversation that needs addressed is what is practical for the economy. We cannot just automate 2/3’s of our jobs and expect our economy not to plummet. I expect AI to be heavily regulated before then.

    Happy to have discovered this channel. I come at this topic from the other direction - as a software engineering leader who is deepening my knowledge in different aspects of RCM and healthcare more general. There are many things that generative AI like GPT really shouldn't be used for IMO ("create X") - but classification is a category of problems where I've found it to actually be really good. At the end of the day though, it's a pattern matcher that's only as good as the data its trained on, so I really liked your point about the rate of change in underlying code data.
    My biggest concern with the tech at this point (which I think underscores the need for human involvement for quite a while) is that whether it's 100% correct or 100% incorrect, the AI model is equally confident in how it presents its findings. Until it has basic data provenance, I think it's going to be difficult to find trustworthy. Additionally, I'm not a fan of having humans reviewing AI output, as I think there's a natural human tendency to "rubber stamp" generated results when tired, etc. IMO, an initial foray into using generative AI in something like coding might be to have the AI analyze the human coded note and give feedback. This also might be a great way to simultaneously capture training data for reinforcement learning algorithms.
    Anyways, this is a huge topic and I'm enjoying your discussion of it. Cheers.

I am a retired respiratory therapist and want to work in a different environment without direct patient care, but I still want to work. Is this a pipedream, or are there opportunities for the 65 and older with healthcare experience?

    My wife is studying medical coding in hopes of improving her career outlook.
    Now, we are inside the Technological Singularity, which is just fancy sounding words to say that we have a surge in the rate of development of science and technology, like when a car is accelerating from 1 MPH to 2 MPH to 4 MPH to 8 MPH. This acceleration of the development of science and technology will not slow down until it gives us scary levels of advanced technology which will seem like science fiction but will be a reality and it is coming so fast society is not preparing well for it, thus it is going to be very disruptive. Who knows exactly what that disruption will result in, but the disruption will increasingly happen and not stop until the rate of development of science and technology not just stops accelerating, but slows down so that society can adjust to all the new things we learn and create.
    One of those disruptions is that AI will, eventually, be able to 100% replace human workers in medical coding. However, I am hopeful that this will not happen so fast that my wife will just waist learning to become a medical coder because within a few years she will be replaced with AI.
    Why I am hopeful for this is that medical coding is an important enough thing that even as AI becomes good enough to do it well, there will be a requirement of human medical coders to oversee and manage such AI. This could mean that fewer medical coding jobs will be available, because one human using AI medical coding tools will be able to do the work of multiple people who do not use those AI tools. I think my wife is above average and thus will end up being the more valued employee to keep.
    What concerns me more is when I see outsourced companies using AI tools who are offering experienced medical coding positions for minimum wage, or worse over seas companies like Medicodio which appears to be located in India and the only medical coding position I see open is for someone with 8 years of experience and they must work on site in India. Given they are offering cloud based medical coding services using AI with human oversight, well, I just find this concerning.
    Problem is, every choice seems scary.
    So, I think one has to make a choice and then work hard to be good at whatever choice they make.
    Our choice is for my wife to become a medical coder and she is working on getting the certificate now.

    I’m not worried. My concern now is their attempt at having doctors select coding. It’s a mess right now where I am. Doctors are leaving for the constant complaints about their documentation and coding. Also, RCMs are not all continuing their education on what’s happening so they heavily rely on their “knowledge” and “experience” which can be often outdated.
    Btw, I’ve been saying that I have gone from beginner to intermediate in coding in just 1 year because I too did programming back in college. So, be sure to apply yourself and continue educating yourself. DO NOT just take quizzes to earn CEUs. DO participate in webinars and live events.
    Love this channel. Proud Coder!!

    Excited about it.
    Hate to break it to everyone but AI is just one part of the move towards automation. AI, ML and RPA (attended and unattended) are already all being deployed in most of the largest industries globally - I know first hand because I’m currently a part of it.
    Best advice is to upskill yourself in the meantime and be a part of the movement. Making yourself the most valuable that you can be to a company will be the best investment you can make for career longevity versus ignoring and remaining oblivious to what’s definitely coming down the pike. Good luck.
