  • I traveled with the good folks of the Wilmington Chapter of the NRHS on their specially charted SUPER SATURDAY STREETCAR SPECIAL XV and put together this video for our March 2008 program.
The video features SEPTA historic trolley 2333 and PCC workcar 2194.

Ok. I hope there will be more new tram networks in US because I think it´s terrible what happened to trams in 50s and 60s.

Our trolleys run more than 50 mph in the subway tunnel. That was a tourist trolley so the rides are sightseeing. Our trolleys operate on some small, busy streets. Any tram lover should appreciate sharp curves. I do not like tram routes without sharp curves. The articulated light rails can't operate on our system because they can't handle the sharp curves.

Yeah, it's in Philadelphia. Their public transportation company is called SEPTA. If you look closely, you will see an "S" on the Trolleys. I am not sure of the history regarding the tracks. Maybe our Anthony can give more details. He filmed the segment. Anthony is a great Photographer and videographer. We used to have trolleys, or street cars, as they are sometimes called here in Delaware, too.

1 person: *sees trolley that they're gonna miss* oh snips. *proceeds to chase the trolley*
The trolley driver: *is still driving the trolley, not realizing that there is a rider chasing the trolley*

Beautiful machines and great movie. But in my opinion, in comparison to our tram systems here in Czech Republic (EU), your tracks have too sharp curves, so tram-cars often have to drive slowly. We use trams as regular transportation, not only as tourist attraction, thus our cars are running at even 40-50 kmph (divide it by 1,6 to have approx value in Mph) in some areas. Greetings, keep your trams running.

What's the significance of the orange train? Can anyone tell me that?

It's a work car normally used for tunnel maintenance, converted from a regular PCC passenger trolley (a/k/a tram), rather than a train.

Do the SEPTA PCCs have the Foot petals like Muni of do they have the Desktop Style controls?

Which city is it? Philadelphia? Does it have regular tram operation today? How much tracks were closed in 50s, 60s...? Very nice PCC trams. We are still using them in Central Europe. Similar type of tram was produced in communist countries to 1990! About 13 000 of this T3 trams were producedBad joke is that this concept of tram was invented in USA. Communist always said that they invented it! Interesting tram story this PCC

Philadelphia still has a few streetcar routes in continuous use. Also 3 trackless trolley routes as well.

SEPTA's predecessor, the PTC (Philadelphia Transportation Company) was taken over by National City Lines in the 1950s. NCL turned out to be a false-front for General Motors and some oil and tire companies. They converted about 2 dozen lines to buses and permanently shut down 3 or 4 others.
SEPTA unfortunately continued their policies. They couldn't convert the five lines that run underground. These were equipped with new Kawasaki-built trams around 1981. All of the other street-level lines were "temporarily" replaced by buses back in the early 1990s. So far only one of those routes (15) has been restored to streetcar service.
The Kawasaki cars are nearing the end of their service lives and SEPTA has announced that they want to buy a new fleet of modern low-floor cars. Whether this means any other "temporary" bus lines will be restored is unknown.
