Clip from the rewatch of Episode 38: Rosetta
One of the MOST impactful episodes in the series folks⊠join Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum as theyâre joined by Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar for our rewatch of Season 2 Episode 17: ROSETTA!! It wouldnât be right doing this episode without these guys. This week we talk about everything from getting Christopher Reeve to appear in the episode, what he thought of Smallville, Tomâs interactions with him on set, and so so much more. This is an episode that needs no introduction, so hope you folks enjoy.
MICHAEL ROSENBAUM Shares How They Tried to FIRE HIM Off of SMALLVILLE!!#smallville #talkville #season2 - ZĂĄbava
Michael Rosenbaum was the best Lex Luthor I have ever seen. He could easily act the role of Lex Luthor on Justice League. Jessie is a good actor but Michael just mastered the Lex Luthor character exceptionally well. I cannot see anyone ever coming close.
Rosenbaum = Lex Luthor
Jessie Eisenbergs take on Lex was terrible. He's the worst Lex I've ever seen.
@@jimbobjunior. He was more like the Joker on speed or crack than Lex Luthor. He stunk on ice. Michael would've been better by light years.
Michael is def lex hands down. Jesse would of been a good riddler, def a missed opportunity!
@@jayv231_ agreed
This show was truly about Clark and Lex and I loved that they put it that way... Friends/that became enemies. It was sad seeing Lex go from the show and in some respects it would have been nice to have seen some back and force after he learns Clark has superpowers....
When lex said: I am the villain of this story.. .that was super cool.
What's interesting to me about Michael Rosenbaum leaving at the end of Season 7, is that by that point, Smallville had jumped the shark. Rosenbaum's absence only aggravated the series' decline. Cassidy Freeman was amazing as Tess Mercer, a fill-in character for the absent Lex Luthor, but ultimately, without Lex, Smallville was a TV series on life support. The Kandorian storyline was the drizzling sh*ts, and I nearly stopped watching the series. So, in an attempt to keep the fans engaged, the writers kept bringing in characters from DC Comics' that audiences were familiar with from other mediums. Notwithstanding, Smallville plateaued from Season 8 up until the series finale in Season 10. All that being said, the dynamic between Clark and Lex was essential to Smallville's success.
Even though it became clear that Smallville was doing its own alternate version of Superman's story, they still felt the need to have Lex not recognize Clark as Superman so they came up with that stupid plot devices with the virus that wipes all his memories. The show had spent so much building up Lex to just remove almost everything that made him great all this time.
In a lot of ways in the pilot clark saving lex led them to become friends, but also led them to become enemies. Lex in the first three seasons or so obviously was thankful to clark for saving his life, which led them to become friends. But, at the same time, lex couldn't stop trying to figure out why he survived, or how clark was able to save his life and that was an obsession that he couldn't let go of and so they became enemies.
I've just always loved how Rosenbaum brought a little more humility to Lex's character even when he became a full on villain. but it might be that I just love him as an actor.
My favorite Lex Luthor scenes were the ones where he was completely perplexed by "something" that had just saved his life or foiled his plans. Eventually, he came to know that something as the Red-Blue Blur, and over time he pieced everything together to conclude that his initial suspicions of Clark being superhuman were correct. As Lex is becoming this ultra-powerful figure in the world, he keeps encountering this mysterious force that stymies him time-after-time. I believe that Lex's journey of trying to figure out who the real Clark Kent is, played a major part in the series' success from Seasons 1 to 7.
It's sad that he hasn't had more success as an actor after Smallville. Other TV show actors like Chris Pratt, Zachary Levi, became leading actors in blockbuster movies. Rosenbaum could have easily carved his own niche in Hollywood.
The character in Smallville who made the whole story work for me was not Clark Kent, it was Lex Luthor. Michael Rosenbaum was the best actor in the Smallville cast. His ability to make you sympathize with the same bad guy you loved to hate was outstanding!
Exactly. Soooo many times I was like damnnn Youuu lex lol then I felt bad at the same time. Great acting!!!!!!
Yes, Smallville had a large number of super-powered villians, but it was Lex, a mere mortal, who was the most powerful, significant villain in the whole series. Clark's greatest weakness wasn't Kryptonite, it was his moral compass. For that reason, he couldn't kill Lex, which was a problem, because Lex had no compunctions about harming or killing innocent people, including those who were close to Clark.
Season 5 lex go brrrr
Eh, John Glover was no slouch, he and Michael were the best
Agreed it's a real shame he left the show before it ended.
Michael is literally the BEST Lex I've ever seen in ANY rendition of Superman in cinema!!!
Smallville isn't cinema, it's TV
The only way that's true is if you never watched a Superman movie.
Tom & Michael seem to be such hard working guys. Makes me sad when I hear about them being mistreated.
Yeah, it sounds like the producers of Smallville were tyrannical at times. Time-Warner/The CW gave them too much control over the actors on set.
Yes totally agree it wasnât a Superman show it was a Clark Kent and lex Luther story line. Thatâs why we all loved it.
Michael is My Lex Luther. He played that character so well that I have a hard time seeing other actors as Lex.
We (my wife and I) just watched the entire series again, and even though we knew what was going to happen we still loved Lex so much we wanted he and Clark to work it out. Micheal as Lex is one of the characters that has touched us deeply and made the series so enjoyable. Thanks Micheal for that.
My Lex Luthor. He was perfect. A tragic friendship. From Clark and Lex to Superman vs Luthor
I thought that Donald Glover (Lionel Luthor) did a masterful job of molding Lex into the ruthless supervillain that he would eventually become.
I loved him as Lex. Even my grandmother thought he was the best part of the show.
The 1 dislike is from Peter Roth.
Your comment won't become outdated at all.
Michael Rosenbaum is the best Lex Luthor to date and no one has done better yet. Tom Welling was a great Clark Kent also.
When he said.. I am the villain of the story.. I said nobody will ever top this performance
Rosenbaum would give Royal Shakespeare Company actors a run for the money as the lead in Shakespeareâs Richard III. Thatâs how good his portrayal of Lex was. He wasnât just playing Lex Luthor, he nailed Richard III going from good to evil
by far the best Lex! by far!
Bring back Smallville! This time around force Tom to wear the Super suit.
This makes me feel like i wasted 10 years following this show. It was Clark Kent becoming Superman, we didn't get Superman we deserved for the loyalty. Sorry Tom, its true.
In my opinion, Tom Welling is out of shape and looks too old to be Superman. I am, however, all for seeing Michael Rosenbaum on the big screen, reprising his role as Lex Luther.
@@highlanderc CGI mess.
He never wanted to wear it and didn't want to be Superman.
@@stoneman8110 Ten years into Smallville. It's not about him at this point.
I did extra work twice when I was younger just to see how movies and TV is done. Once on a show called Killer Instinct, no one watched it and it was cancelled after 1 season. Didn't end up doing anything but sitting around and talking with the other people because they were behind schedule.
Second time was on Smallville and I remember two things from that experience. The first was seeing Tom Welling on the set and thinking damn that guy is huge. And the second was how many of the other extras who had been on that set mutiple times hated it because they had the cheapest craft services and would treat the extras like shit. Can't say they treated anyone like shit that day but I do remember when it was time to eat they had cheaped out and had nothing but hotdogs available. Had friends who had worked on various shows doing extra work and they all said Smallville was known as the cheap set that didn't want to pay for proper food for the workers and who would mistreat the workers.
And to clarify I don't mean the actors were mistreating the extra because that's just the opposite. I mean the people I charge of the extras and running the set were just cheap and wouldn't provide them with food or would be very rude to the extras.
WB shows in general are notorious for cutting corners.
As far as having low-cost amenities goes, there's a reason that Smallville was filmed in British Columbia, Canada, and not the United States. The cost is significantly lower. That's also why the Christopher Reeve Superman films were made in Canada. Unfortunately, since most things in Canada are more expensive than they are in the U.S., then corners have to be cut for the film crew's amenities. I guess that the Canadian workers are used to these working conditions, but the Americans might not be.
Just started watching SmallVille, I checked it out at the Library and all I can say itâs Awesome.
Better late than never.
Wth no idea these fellas had a pod, thanks algorithm
Michael and Tom is an iconic duo. Firing him would have been a big mistake! â€
This episode was great!!
Ive always heard these sorts of thing in the background when it comes to TV. Execs are trying to turn so high of a profit they will undercut their stars every time.
Hahah man itâs a good thing they didnât fire Rosenbaum the series would have took too big a hit could you imagine đ
Yeah firing michael would have resulted in the show being done a lot faster than 10 seasons lol
Michael Rosenbaum was the best live action Lex Luthor ever
Hey, guys! I've started to watch "Smallville" a couple of days ago. Again đ . It's my favourite TV show!
You must like badly written teenage soap-opera's maquerading as super hero shows then.
Smallville was a good show.. I use to have a huge crush on Kristen growing up đđ
There hasn't been any other Lex Luthor as real as Michael.
Kinda burying the literal lede here:
Tom talking about asking for more money, and management is giving him bullshit to tell him "No" ...and Al is giving insight to how they say no. Just like any other job: ask for a raise, and get rejected.
As someone who grew up watching Gene Hackman, Michael was the best Lex
thanks for the awesome childhood, running from school to watch smallvile
I've only recently started (FINALLY lol) watching Smallville. I'm almost done season 2, and I'm loving it!
I can see why it was such a popular show.
My favorite is Michael Rosenbaum's portrayal of Lex Luthor. He is great in the role. Everyone is good, but I especially enjoy episodes that heavily feature Lex.
John Glover as his dad is also fun to watch.
The best part for me is that I have several seasons left to go through and since I never really paid any attention to the show until now....I know none of the twists or where storylines go.
(I don't count knowing that Lex ultimately becomes a full on bad guy being a spoiler)
I also like how they slowly have Clark discover the range of his powers.
Such a good show
Yep bring it back SMALLVILLEâ€
Michael Rosenbaum was my #MCM from Smallville. When everyone was mooning over Tom, I had eyes for Michael. When I found out that he was the voice of Flash on Justice League, that made me go all dreamy eyed over him again.
I probably would have quit watching on the spot if they had fired him...
Watched the finale again it was good to see lex would of liked another episode
Just agree to take their first offer, on the condition you can leave at anytime for a better offer. If they want a guarantee, now thatâs gonna cost.
I wish he would play Lex in the new Superman movie
He says I called him and asked him to do that lmfao
0:47 is that a blacklight lamp in a BLENDER ? I'm a lighting geek! You need a lid to your blender Michael. đ
Hey tom
I can still hear the Wally in his voice.
Cuz he's evil
I know of two Lex Luthors Smallvilleâs and Justice Leagues. The best renditions
He was the best Flash.
Michael Rosenbaum is so Cool
I was infatuated with the Lex Luther character in this series!!!
Michael is still the best Lex to this date on screen
Micheal Rosenbaum was the best Lex Luther, does not matter what I think about the show in general and the way the "#"€" clark, Lex did what I think Lex would/should do in that show.
I can h8 the part the character do, but love how the actor does it
So why did Peter Roth want to fire him?
Smallville was s huge show. It was the stop gap between Lios & Clark and the Cavill era (Routh doesn't count!).
I want to know how he felt watching synders pick for lex. All i remember about mikes lex was quality
Cool
Michael is literally the best Lex and FLASH period
Wow, good thing you had Drago from Jackie Chan Adventures as a backup or was that the next year? Either way, it would have been a disaster.
What i heard here is Pete was fired in part cos they had to pay up.
Did they say why he wanted Michael fired?
I don't know if it was cut but I want to know why he wanted him fired. But the biggest question I have about the whole show is why they bothered with the show after lex no offence to Tom he was always great but the show just coming back as he's missing and we just go along with that... I would have offered another 10 mil on episode 2. Of season 8 would have made 3-4 times that. Instead they probably lost 50mil atleast in dwindling views causing season 11 to get wiped.
Oh wow was he in Smallville. He's never mentioned it before
Have the actors of smallville that do the smallvile podcast telling stories about the time filming smallville as they go through each episode of smallvile talked about being in Smallville to much for you?
If they had fired Rosenbaum, I wouldâve been pissed.
I just want you to be the dcu Lex Luthor!
Off topic question: Michael Rosenbaum - where did you get that t-shirt?
This show would have truly been over if they would have fired Michael Rosenbaum. Tom Welling was a great act but the level of theatrics that John Glover and Michael brought to the show was on another level.
Just realized thatâs him lol wow
Michael was a great young Lex, but my favorite Lex is from the Superman Animated Series/JL/JLU. That voice actor and the animation and writing for his character was so epic.
Rosenbaum was the Flash on that show.
@@JoshuaKevinPerry Yes, it was Clancy Brown that was Luthor on JL/JLU.
@@ValiantWrestlingwho is also Mr Crabs on Sponge Bob.
There is NO better Lex Luthor than Michael! He was and still is THE Lsx Luthor!
They really tried to fire the best character on the show đ€·ââïž
Wait Iâm I missing something here? Why did he want him fired?!!!!!đź
Because he wanted more money. They think because the show is making more money they should have to pay the actors more.
@@1971mav They think that because they're right. You should absolutely be paying more money to the actors who are bringing in more money.
@@1971mav All the main actors on Smallville should have gotten a raise because the series was a hit. Michael Rosenblem was the only one who knew his worth.
@@Mr.Reckless agreed! Itâs crazy to think they wouldnât give him a pay rise. His performance as lex was amazing and without a shadow of a doubt, he made the show compelling to watch.
What people don't get is that every time one of the main actors decides they should get a raise that money has to come from somewhere. Many of these actors are already paid per episode more than anyone on here makes in a year. When they ask for a raise it skyrockets into , often times, obscene amounts of money. So when the studio is forced into paying a lead more, then everyone else will makes less. Generally the crew and the writers get fired get fired to make up the loss and they just have the remaining crew work more for less money.
I was an extra on a show for four seasons while I was in college. Each year the crew shrank and got zero raises while the leads got even richer. Now I don't care myself because I'm pro-capitalism and that means I can leave anytime an do something else and have the ability go get mine. My issue is with the "celebs" that act like they care about their co-workers and "equal" treatment when they demand vast sums of money and special attention.
I learned very quickly that the "talent" doesn't give two craps about their crew and all their "lets give it up to our great crew means nothing. They actors KNOW when they demanded an extra half million that crew members that are making about 50K would get fired. A "hit show" is no guarantee of getting more ad revenue dollars it only guarantees you wont lose ad revenue to other less popular shows. The show I was on it was kind of common knowledge the lead made about a hundred and sixty thousand an episode with there being 23 episodes a year. Do the math and compare to the five people making, if lucky, 50K a year that worked, not getting long breaks in their trailer or at craft services like the actors and even us extras, but WORKED all day and all night with only a few breaks.
My only point is that its not a black and white issue where actor good studio bad. It's unlikely Michael was getting less than 25K an episode when on Vampire Diaries the barely there back up cast with speaking lines were paid 15K up to 30K per episode. Hell I was paid 200/day even if all I did was eat the amazing free food from craft services and play video games. 100.00 for a couple hours work was normal as well. Its not a bad gig if you can get it. Just do as your told, don't show up late, and NEVER talk to any of the main cast unless they directly come to you and start talking. And God help you if they just choose to not like you or you don't kiss their butt exactly how they like.
HE should have been Superman and most certainly Lex in the movies
Thank goodness Peter didnât succeed in his quest, the show wouldnât have been much fun without Lexđ
Not to put anyone under the bus or anything but Jessie as Lex is kinda predictable and his take/portrayal of Lex that seems to have a manic problem is kinda off for me. Michael is the only Lex that even in defeat always has a comeback usually via witty rebuttals. He is so calm and candid yet when he smiles, it makes you think that he is always one or two steps ahead of the game. In my opinion at least XD
Who's that Peter they're talking about?
**BRING BACK BIGVILLE!!** đ
More poddys with the creators, theyâre honestly better than the guest stars cos they go on an inside of you style tangent.
you thought the show lasted as long as it did cause no one watched it and the studio just enjoyed wasting money?
This showed would've died without Rosenbau. đđđ
Best Lex Luthor of all time
I guess his Lex Luthor was more complicated than al the other Lex LUthers. Michael Rosenbau's Lex was more a Grey Character. ?ACtually, the first few seasons- His Lex was a good guy.
Yeah if the WB fired Michael especially if they fire Tom Smallville would have never been popular as it was. Just like how when we see Freddy movies without Robert England the movies arent great. There are just some movies and TV shows that require certain actors to play certain characters because of the chemistry they bring to those characters that without them it wouldn't be the same. Just like without Timothy for the justified primal City the show wouldn't last to be honest they replaced Timothy if a different actor to play Marshall givens..
Michael is the best live Lex Luther EVER
Lex Luthor was the best character on Smallville- still enjoyed the entire cast.
I wish they would have done more with Sam Jones III.
Lionel and Lex are the reasons I want to keep going back to it
The show was in limbo after lex was killed off and only became legendary in the final episode when they completed their arc
How does Tom have gray hair and still look like he's 25?
Kryptonian blood mayb....fine. NM.
Hopefully James Gunn makes Smallville animated sequel series
The uncomfortable laughter as everyone tells stories about how capitalism stifles art....
great comment
They would have destroyed the show if they fired Michael. Glad it worked out.
Michael was THE BEST Lex Luthor there ever was. Full Stop
They shouldâve paid him whatever he wanted. The quality of the show drastically dropped after he left
He was indeed the best lex luthor.
Rosenbaum if you read these comments you definitely out-done yourself. It felt like your character was the only one that was properly developed for the show.
Best lex ever no one is close to his representation of lex not even f'n jesse eisenburg horrible lex luthor
Best Lex Luthor, I wish the later seasons made better use of Lex
The best live action lex Luther ever đ„đ„đ„
Oh god another rewatch podcast
Firing the best Lex Luthor, completly brainless move.
ow they tried to fire him from the show..from Small.. ffs
after michael left the show went downhill and i never finished watching the series.
I watched the show because of Lex Luthor.
When he's gone, i stop watching the rest of the seasons, except season 9 final episode.
Dude is gonna be talking about smallville the rest of his life, turn the page.
Somebody actually watched Smallville? Why?
Asks someone who cares enough about the show to click on the video and comment on it.
