Eve, Psyche, and the Bluebeard’s wife refrences three women in mythological history:
Eve, who is the biblical character who got her and Adam banished from the garden of Eden.
Psyche is a Greek Goddess considered the goddess of the soul whose beauty caused Aphrodite to envy her. She was originally a princess who married Aphrodite’s son and was given immortality.
Bluebeard’s wife is a character originated from a French folktale story called Bluebeard. Bluebeard is a man who murdered his six wives previously. When his current wife finds out (she was also never given a name, hence her title) he threatens to kill her. He is instead killed by her family. She inherits his wealth after his death which she used to have all six of Bluebeard’s previous wives buried.
The common thread between these women is that their curiosity is ultimately blamed for their downfalls.
In this song they are telling the story of each women: saying that even though they may feel distressed or angry or sad, they are still themselves. They wish for the forbidden: Eve who ate the forbidden apple, Psyche who saw Eros’ face regardless of Aphrodite, and the Bluebeard’s wife who turned away all of his treasures to open a forbidden door.
