  • Established in 1981, the Council for National Policy has been the leading organization for wealthy, conservative decision makers to consolidate their power. This little-known coalition of elites is the strategic nerve center for fundraising money and mobilizing voters behind the scenes. Critics say that with its membership private and meetings held at an undisclosed location, the Council for National Policy has successfully made game plans and decisions steering the Republican Party in a process virtually unknown to the public. Award-winning author and media analyst Anne Nelson, however, is looking to demystify the elaborate organization.
    In her new book Shadow Network, Nelson uncovers the key fundamentalists, oligarchs and allies that comprise the powerhouse of the Council for National Policy. She reveals stories about the Koch brothers, radical right-wing organizations, the decline of local journalism, the race for digital engagement, and the fight over the information war. As a research scholar at Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs, Nelson has focused her work on the role of digital media in aiding underserved populations through health, education and culture. Now, in a time of stark and growing threats to our most valued institutions and democratic freedoms, Nelson looks to illuminate the clouded history behind the political coalition.
    Join us as Anne Nelson uncovers the conservative process that plays a significant role in shaping political outcomes today.

    Anne Nelson has raised a number of very important issues here. In particular the need for local media. National media is great for covering national and global issues but it simply cannot cover local issues. We need media that can cover city council meetings, county issues, water district meetings, school boards and other local issues. These are things that are vital to our country but national media rarely if ever covers.

    I have read Katherine Stewart's book, "The Power Worshippers," and Krustin DuMez's book," Jesus and John Wayne," both pulling the curtain back for a good long look at the people pulling the levers. I am a refugee from the Evangelical Church experience, though I have always felt like a square peg in a round hole. I am a progressive Democrat, and tried for decades to navigate that Conservative construct in Christian communities. When Trump ran for office and the people in my church circles wildly endorsed him, I was left scratching my head. I had been introduced to The Seven Mountain Mabdate and recognized it as a repackaging of the Dominionism of my earlier Christian experience. I rejected it then and reject it now. The Prosperity cult appeared to people's innate greed, and I watched congregations being manipulated into giving large sums of money, with the promise that God would double or triple the offering back to the giver.That sickened me. I listened to pastors slip their political agendas into their sermons, and it became intolerable. When I voiced my concerns, I was labeled a Marxist. Your excellent book has further clarified the whole insidious plot to uproot a representative Democracy, and install a Theocratic Autocracy. This is horrifying. I am telling anyone who will listen, by recommending these three books, and podcasts to get informed. The dots have been connected and it is not a pretty picture. God bless your work, and warnings to an unsuspecting, if puzzled, population. Thank you.God multiply these three astute voices across the nation, and around the globe.

    • @wolfumz
      @wolfumz Před 11 měsíci +1

      I've been having a hard time explaining this to my center right and friends on the right, too. I swear, conspiratorial thinking has really spread wide on the right, and it didn't used to be this way. I've been so surprised at what otherwise nornal people are willing to believe since 2016. In the 90s, I used to have well-considered debates about abortion in the 90s, or about the economy. Those days are long gone. Today, conservative thought is a mile wide and an inch deep.
      Many GOP tenets have been thoroughly disproven over the years. e.g., the economic "law" that lowering taxes will _always_ grow the economy, it's not true. However conservatives treat as self evident. They have a self image problem, which is that they view their opinions and value judgements to be statements of fact.
      To be sure, young people freaking despise the GOP. The GOP says this is because the youth are thoroughly indoctrinated. But that's baloney. Just think of all the crazy GOP failures and catastrophes that have accorded since 2003. The last 20 years are a litany of failures for the GOP, some of them were whoppers.
      So all these things the GOP is doing right now to try and win over Trump's base, it's all going to come back to haunt them when this generation comes of age. Majorly. Young people aren't going to forget who repealed Roe v. Wade, who tried to repeal their health insurance, who fought against civil rights for gays and blacks, and who sided with oil companies over climate science.

    One thing that has confused me for some time and, my confusion intensifies here with her mentioning of churches, is the political aspect of these various churches. I truly thought churches were NOT allowed to express any political preference if they wanted to keep their nonprofit status and NOT pay taxes. I remember decades ago, going to a church where the congregation wanted the pastor to address a political issue and he said NO because he said-- We are a church and we're NOT allowed to get involved in politics-- in any way, shape and or form. Does anyone have an idea regarding WHY this mandate has changed or WHY this is so prevalent now if the mandate of NO political advocacy remains?

    • @Herschel1738
      @Herschel1738 Před 2 lety +16

      Under IRS laws, non-profits, including churches, can support a political issue, but not a specific party or candidate.** If they do so, they can lose their non-profit status.
      The problem is that the government does not like to interfere with religious freedom, so is very careful about poking its nose into church activities. A local level IRS rep can initiate an audit of YOU, but ONLY an appropriate high-level Treasury official can initiate an audit of a church and then only if he has a written statement that the church may be breaking the law. As churches don't have to file taxes (other non-profits are required to if their income is over $50K/year), the only people who might have solid info that the church is breaking the law are the church members. And do you think they are going to rat out their minister if they are in on the scam , or if they think he is the only one who is keeping them from burning in Hell for all eternity? Not likely.
      Churches that don't belong to hierarchical sects (i.e. Methodist, Presbyterian, Catholic, etc) that can oversee their activities, often become big pits of fraud & corruption because the only oversight they have is their Board & the congregation. Churches have been given a free ride to run roughshod over the law (like Anne Nelson points out) because you are messing with a lot of ill informed people who will cry "Religious Persecution" at any attempt to make them follow the laws the rest of us must obey.
      **The IRS has a category of political non-profits that are created specifically to support candidates & parties. An ad that says "Paid for by the Committee to Elect John Doe" is probably paid for by a political non-profit..

They have specific talking points they will bring up at every opportunity online. Also, this “war on Christianity “ claim is tied in with this trend of churches involved in politics.

    Some of us have been studying the Council for National Policy for a number of years. People have to remember that at the time the CNP was founded in 1981, Ronald Reagan and George H W Bush were working towards the dismantling of the former Soviet Union and the Christian Evangelicals played an important role as back channels into the former USSR.. Indeed, Gorbachev developed Glasnost "Openness" because he was an active participant in the massive changes about to take place in the USSR in the early 90's. All the members of the CNP were ardent anti-Communists among them, John Singlaub who was active in World Anti-Communist League founded by Cheng Kai Shek and Reverend Sun Myung Moon who was not only Korean CIA, he was a close friend of George H W Bush.. Moon also met with President Eisenhower in the 1950's.
    J Edgar Hoover founded the American Council of Christian Churches which he used as a front for anti-Communist activity and cover for espionage activity beginning in 1941.
    Early members of the Council for National Policy included Philis Schlafley, the Hunt Brothers from Texas, Richard DeVos who founded Amway is was the father in law of Betsy DeVos, General Singlaub, Richard Secord, Ed Meese (Attorney General under Reagan, Grover Norquist, Ralph Reed, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, James Dobson etc.. This is spot on. I was raised in the soul crushing world of radical, right-wing, South Florida Republicanism. I was enrolled in a "segregation academy" school that masqueraded as a conservative, Baptist, church in the 1960s.
    What always made me mad was their willingness to lie, chisel, obfuscate and cheat with language, exploiting vulnerable people. It was a world of flim-flam to get what you want. Our side was for Jesus!
    They've patiently kept chipping away at the separation of church and state and now we're in for rough political weather.
    American education needs work. First thing is the value of knowing sh*% from Shineola. The religious rights goals are not Shineola.

    Those who are in high places in government, business, and the clergy are angry right now because they know their days are numbered. The fact that they are willing to resort to dishonorable conduct, including but not limited to violence bears that out. These individuals are in for a rude awakening when hyperinflation comes to pass because the pied Piper is about to appear on the scene demanding payment in full; and if these megadebtors cannot come up with the required amount, they will be delinquent, and their credit ratings will be abysmal. This severe economic impending downturn will stop certain political strategists dead in their tracks because no matter how much money they throw into the political arena, it will not be nearly enough to have any sway at all.

    Yikes---she is completely mis-informed about liberal radio outlets failed attempts to get their foot in the doors of AM broadcasting: It has proven to be, unfortunately, a bad model from a strictly financial angle, as it has been easier to generate AM radio advertising dollars from a lesser-educated, perhaps more easily aroused right-wing audience than the more affluent, better-educated listeners (they turn to FM instead, although that market is much smaller and less "dynamic"). PLUS, a consortium of conservative radio broadcasting organizations have seen fit to buy up much of the commercial airwaves and then peopled those airwaves with often extreme right-leaning voices. Again, it's the rightist's long, steady and dedicated planning to dominate and change public opinion, for the sake of money, power and social influence that has won the day. The liberal (or at least centrist) AM radio broadcasting market, essentially, has been stolen by the right.

This ties in with the free-press attacks too.
