I saw at the historic Spanish Mission San Luis Obispo museum in California one of these blackthorn walking sticks. It was made by coppicing the blackthorn bush with a mature center stalk as the staff with thin coppiced growths that were braided around the center stalk while green. Then the whole thing was havested and dried. So instead of a blackthorn walking stick this one had whip like growths braided around. It looks vicious with all those long sharp thorns!
Hello, yes I have also seen pictures of such a walking stick, it looks cool. Maybe I will make one too. You can also let them grow like this , but it takes years. you have to count on about 3 years to weave new branches around a suitable stick to grow and then another 2 to 3 years to dry before you can start. so we are talking about a 6 year project, thanks for your response, Philippe
