Yeah, ole Evel was singlehandedly responsible for more scrapes, bruises, and broken bones in 70s kids than anything else. I remember doing the same thing with my friends. Jumping anything and everything that resembled a ramp. One time we used an old slide from a backyard playground set someone had thrown away. It worked great until a heavyset buddy of mine took a run at it on his bike, and it folded like a cheap suit. He looked liked we worked him over with a cheese grater, he was so scraped up. Good times! lol

A small backstory to that night. The Cow Palace was packed with maybe 8-10,000 people. There was a Pro indoor motorcycle race program before Evel's jump. I was one of the racers, and was in awe to ride in front of that crowd. Of course most were there to see Evel, not us. When the mayhem started, the striped wooden inside track markers were picked up by everyone and used to beat the shit out of the Angels. Was quite a night to remember, and a good one.

A couple of them ended up getting killed in a feud by a rival biker gang just up the road at a night club in Charlotte. They were shot and found stuffed in the trunk of a car. One of them was considered a high ranking member for the Angels nationally so this stirred up the gang across the entire country. The funeral procession of motorcycles from where I lived to the cemetery somewhere in Charlotte went on for miles and miles. However, my dog at the time chewed up the action figure & I lost the launcher somewhere sometime. I still have the original motorcycle & proudly display it! I have seen them on Ebay so I might just go ahead & purchase the set.

Anti-vietnam War peace march on Telegraph Ave from Berkeley going into Oakland in the 60's. Oakland PD hated hippies and said sure come on in and march. All the cops got out of the way like the parting of the Red Sea and standing behind the police were hundreds of Hell's Angels that started beating the protesters and the Oakland cops just stood there and watched. Oakland PD actually pre-planned the whole thing with the Hell's Angels. So hearing that the HA got surrounded and stomped at the Cow Palace makes my DAY!

The cop went on to say that we shouldn't look up to Evel because he's a chump and when he jumped the snake river canyon, he had a bunch of his "Flunkies" down there to rescue him.
As if any of us knew what a Flunkie was but I knew it must have meant Evels friends or people that helped him.

When he set out to do something he kept his word and saw it through even when he knew it would bring bodily harm on himself. A true gladiator.
