Over the course of the Twentieth Century, art movements such as Surrealism, Cubism, De Stijl and Colour Field, have put forward their interpretations of abstraction. Contemporary artists working with Abstraction today largely derive their styles and techniques from these and other historical movements. Over the last hundred years or so, abstraction has proven to be one of the most durable, adaptable, and powerful forms of contemporary art.
Hugh Kearney’s new body of work is influenced by a combination of historical abstraction, West Coast modernism, the urban landscape, and his Maliseet First Nations heritage. The strong graphic forms in the work are most closely tied to the organic abstract works of Miro and Calder, combined with the curvaceous forms of Coastal B.C. indigenous art, with the pill-shaped, cross-hatched elements referencing the Maliseet First Nations art of weaving.
But Kearney’s works are more than the sum of their parts. The techniques he uses produce paintings of visual complexity and interest, with form, rhythm, colour and line creating dynamic abstract paintings that connect with the viewer on an emotional level. In this collection of work he has created art that is singular and of its time, built on a foundation that incorporates both the history of abstraction, and his own personal history and heritage.

Thank you for introducing me to this artist. I love his paintings and now need to learn more. I think I've seen a painting or two of his in museums, but it takes seeing a group of an artist's works together for me to start to appreciate them. I seriously love his work and appreciate your thoughtful commentary.

You're welcome, and thank you for your comments. I really appreciate it. I tried checking to see if the artist has a website and unfortunately he doesn't. However, if you search "Hugh Kearney artist" you'll find some wonderful images spanning more than ten years. He does have an artist studio in Vancouver so if you're ever in this part of the world, I'd be happy to refer you to some places where his work is exhibited. Keep well 🙂

Paintings are nice, but not inspiring, I am First Nations , if that is the reference , here you have to have signed a treaty in the 1860’s which I have no record .I once had a-braid but I am blonde and blue and the Italian portion of my family looks more First Nations, the benefits of proof are huge. I agree on the Calder forms but not Miró.

Why does every artist have to use identity as a selling point?
lol... At this point, its' now become a running joke.

Thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it. The artist himself doesn't really comment much on his ancestry but I made a point to focus on his heritage and how it balances out the influences from other artists such as Brice Marden, Alexander Calder and West Coast Modernism. Keep well !!

Because art is a personal creative journey. So if an artist wants to focus on their heritage, that is very fair
