I owned the 50m1.8 for two years and loved it for portraits and landscapes. This was my go to lens when I only wanted one lens. My husband and I recently planned a get-a-way trip and he said "absolutely no cameras," but I could use my smartphone to take pictures. On the suggestion of a fellow amateur photographer, I borrowed a 35mm1.8 to take on vacation. My Sony a6000 with the 35mm was small and unassuming so hubby was OK with that. I took the most incredible shots ever - portraits, landscapes, oceans, street and more. The images I took at a distant were sharp enough to crop with almost no quality lost - Love Love Love this lens. I purchased a "used" lens as soon as I got back from my trip. Unfortunately I almost never use the other lenses anymore. Recently took a portrait class, tried all of the appropriate lenses in the class, and ended up using the 35mm for the last 3 weeks of the class.
Really like how far you've come since the last time I watched one of your videos! You've actually really progressed as a photographer and those pictures coming out of the a6000 are impressive!
Thanks so much! I really appreciate that! I'm working hard to step up my photo/video game
Thanks for the comparison Dan!
I think i will get them both, 50mm for indoor head talking videos & portraits, 35mm for outdoor vlogs & street photo.
After trying out multiple lenses for e-mount the best combo that I found is 50mm f1.8 for portraits/ low light and 18-105 f4 for everything else. You don't usually need low f on wide angle landscape/city photography and with longer range and higher the depth of field even at f4 the bokeh is great. I find 50mm to be more "artistic" than the 30mm sigma f1.4 that I used before (the reason I bought it in the first place over 35mm Sony was the sharpness)
Thank you very much. I hope you keep the good work. Love to subscribe.
This kind of content really help people. I'd watched a great comparison review between both before, and he said almost the same things with you.
So tomorrow I'm gonna buy the 3mm.
I own the a6000 w/ the 35mm, I find myself questioning should I upgrade for a full frame a7ii/iii but when I see videos like yours and the quality of the photos the combination of the a6000 & 35/50 still produces amazing photos! Great video and great photos dude 👍🏼
Yoooo! Awesome review, Dan! Thanks so much for what you do!
very well explained and helped me make an easy decision between the 2. Nice job!
Hey man this was great, thanks for making this video.
This was actually super helpful. I do a lot of nature shots in overgrown fields and woods and I probably will need the 40mm to help get some separation from the subject plant and environment
Brilliant in-depth review. I will always side with 50mm for portraits and 35mm for street photography but that's just my personal preference. Another great video as always :)
Super helpful for a beginner! Definitely going for the 35m. Thank you!
Ok, I know this review has been out there for loooong time, but just to show relevant they can be, I bought my a6000 a month after they came out and here it is, almost 7 years later, just now learning how to use it. Really liked your review and presentation style. Looking to picking up a Tamron 17-70 f2.8 or Sigma 18-50.
Great Review. You convinced me on the 35, i almost went with the 50, but you make a good point about the flexibility of the 35mm. Thanks!
I have the Sony 24 mm, 35 mm and 50 mm, all f 1.8. Of the three the Sony Zeiss 24 mm has the best colors and is consistently sharp. The 50 mm is also sharp but not as consistent. The 35 mm is troubling for me. It can produce very fine photos but consistency is not as good as the other two. I have noticed that under low light, the autofocus can create soft focus photos. Other times, I think softness is due to camera motion. Or it could be that I utilize f1.8 too much in situations where I do not have the appropriate depth of field.
If you have the Sony APS-C system, you should own the 35 mm and 50 mm. The Zeiss is costly so it may be a stretch for some. But it is one fine lens.
This video was very helpful. Thank you very much
tbh, both lenses are great budget lenses for close shots but tbs for the portraits, i'd go for the 50mm, used both and confirmed here that 50mm has bit issue with bright light management which i noticed over here as well while the 35mm does the opposite! Post processing is required anyway.
I find the 50 too tight a lot, but can be worth it for what it can do with 1 or two people in shot.
I do use it for group shots, but have to go back about 20 feet at put it on a stand
I've watched a lot of reviews. And The question that you've asked about "if s.o. pull a gun..." was superb. So i'll go for the 35mm... Thanks. I've subbed btw.
Great pics. Good subject isolation, framing, and colors.
I'm recognizing some Boston landscapes there. Nice video :)
Ich liebe mein 50mm f1.8. Ich nehme es sowohl zum fotografieren also auch für die meisten meiner CZcams Videos und es ist einfach genial scharf und macht tolle Aufnahmen
Dan, if you get the 50 can't you just move back to get the same coverage or field of view? Also do you have a suggestion for a soft box/speed flash combo?
Great review, thanks
I already have the 50 mm, but want to buy the 35 mm. I have noticed that in smaller spaces I can't always get the entire subject in the photo with the 50mm. Therefore I need the 35 mm as well.
thats why i want the 35mm when doing indoor portrait i cant get the whole subject.....if outdoor the 50mm is fine
Same reason I did the same. Especially when shooting paintings in museums, I tend to set the alarm on as I step backwards and touch the rope in front of the painting behind my back... But as far as portraits are concerned I tend to favor the 50mm because you don't have to get too close to the subject for a good close-up shot, less intimidating.
Did you eventualy buy it? I have the 50mm too and although it's great, it's "unusable" in a lot of situations. I went to Milan recently and took some photos of my girfriend and you couldn't really tell she was in Milan as I couldn't get much of the background in the frame.
I have had the 50mm for 3 years now and although I love it, I don't use it very ofter because it's so tight. It's barely usable indoors, I even tried using it in a wedding in a small church and I couldn't really fit the couple in the shot. Also, I went on holiday and tried taking some shots of my girlfriend and you couldn't really tell we were in Milan because you couldn't see much of the surroundings. I'm seriously thinking of buying the 35mm now since it's on offer (290 euros).
Great sample photos, thank you
Finally some one put out the bokeh argument for the 50 mm lens. The narrow angle is a bit of a problem for me, but I'm so torn, because I don't want to loose that subject separation, which looks luxurious for such an inexpensive system. I guess I'm not going to sell my 50 and just buy 19 or 30 mm sigma f2.8.
Would these lenses fit for the Sony nex-5t camera? How about the sigma lens you mentioned would that work also for the camera
Hi Dan, i am really impressed from your video especially the way you compared these two lenses. 35mm and 50mm.
i am learning as recently i buy Sony a6500 with 18-135mm Sony lens and extra i bought 18-55mm kit lens, 35mm f1.8 sony and Rokinon 12mm f/2.
i am intersted more in landscape photography but some family functions i do like portraits or group photos. from last one week i am struggling and fighting with my seld to buy an extrta lens for portrait 50mm or 85mm. but i skip 85mm as of long distance between subject and urself. I saw ur this video and quite satisfied. but please advice me, do i need 50mm for portrait photography if i have 35mm f1.8 Sony
please advice
thank you
Sold my Sigma 30mm f1.4 due to huge autofocus issues on my a6000. I click only photographs (no videos) and tried sigma for good 1 week and to be honest it hunts a lot to pick up subject. 3 to 4 out of 10 pics comes out blurred :(
I already have 50mm f1.8 sony and I love it to the core, now wanted a bit wider field and 35mm seems an interesting option.
Hi Dan, can you recommend me which lens will be the best for cooking video and for traveling
If i only buy 1 lens? And which lens will be the best i bought 2 lens for my 2 purpose above?
Hi Dan! I just pre-ordered the a6400 as my first ever camera. Mainly doing videos, vlogs and shoot some pretty pictures for my wife. If I were to get the SEL18-105mm, which is better prime lens to go along with? The 35mm or 50mm? I watched all your videos on the 35mm and 50mm and I still couldnt decide. And my budget only allows me to get one of them alongside with the 18-105mm. @Dan would love advises from you and everyone here feel free to help me out
I just went for the 35 so I hope I like it !!!!!
I have been using my 55mm for street photography and it been frustrating because I cant get the wider view that I want. I think the 35mm will be the perfect fit for me. Thank you, Dan!
Hi, can you tell me, how far you have to be if you want to shoot 3 or 4 people? is this 35mm good enough for low light wedding filming? or I have to be very far from people...? what you think? thanks
Hi Dan , I recently purchased a used A 6000, but later I found out there are different versions of A6000 , i believe there are 4 different A6000 types, Sony A6000, Sony A6000L and 2 more, can you shed some light please? I want to know what have I bought and also what are the differences between them, Regards Dan and thanks so much for your fabulous content, please keep doing it.
Nice video... I have a query actually... Will these lens work on sony a6100? Also i am a complete beginner also a food blogger.. Which is the best lens for food photography and casual/street photography?
Peace from British Columbia :) Loving my Sigma 30mm 1.4...love it :) 50Sony 1.8 is awesome...thinking of going to the 55mm 1.8 supposed to be a lot sharper ....rental time here I come :)
Hey! Yeah I shot with the 55mm 1.8 one time because my friend has one. Hoping to borrow it for a review at some point :) Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the comparison but I was expecting to see the equally-sized shoots. It’s obvious that 35mm is a wider lense. If you could move closer and shoot with 35mm to compare it 50mm it was more useful
I’ve been rocking the 35mm for awhile now but then I got the 85mm FE Sony lens and sure it’s annoying to have to run back a football field worth to get a full body shot, but that body shot will be amazing..
Yeah the 85 is a great lens too for sure. Did you get the 85mm f/1.4?
Can I use 50mm 1.8 lens for video sony a6000???
Well, now thanks to your video I want a 35
Which lens will be better for food photography?
Thank you for sharing
Hi Dan,
I noticed your pens t-shirt - do you take ice-hockey shots ?
What kind of lenses you use?
Could you please recommend some lenses for sports (Sony A6000)?
Thanks!!
I'm more of a casual spectator than a sports photographer :) For recommended lenses, see my free guide: www.danbullman.com/store/sony-a6000-lens-guide
Hey man, thanks for the awesome comparison of the two lenses. Quick question, are you going to review the Sigma 30mm 1.4 for emount? Would be great if you can compare it with the Sony 35mm 1.8. Cheers!
+Shaun Cusi Hi Shaun! I do plan to review the Sigma 30mm at some point in the near future. Just gotta get my hands on one
Dan Bullman Photography cool appreciate the response! :) will stay tuned! Keep it up!
I have the 50mm and just got the 35 today, now to check it out, and see which I like most :)
@@ciciliajuliyanti5968 The 50mm but I sold it, because I have a 50mm for my Canon. I haven't used the 35mm much either, because I invested in a Canon G7X M3 easier to carry along 😊
35mm for me because I am mostly going to shoot kids, family indoor /outdoor. 35mm will be more versatile in different situations. Especially if I only have 50mm in some set up(especially indoor) I wouldn’t have enough space to shoot. So my choice would be 35mm. I haven’t bought a6000 yet but this is what I am thinking.
I think I'm gonna get the 250
Just wondering if you use an external microphone for your videos? The quality seems better than the internal microphone. Thanks!
I do. I use the Sony UWP-D11 mounted onto the hotshoe with a Sony SMAD-P3. Quality is much better than the internal mic
Me thinks that with the kit lens having the range of 16-50 albeit limited to 3.5, I'll go with the 50. Nice portraits bro...
acabo de comprar usado el 35mm en 180 usd :D
es mi primer objetivo fijo y el primero despues del lente de kit
espero me agrade :D
Nice video man. I have sony a6500 with 18-105 lens, i am thinking of buying 35mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.8. I would love to shoot portraits and maybe street photo as well. Should i go 35mm or 50 mm? Little help
Would u combo 35mm with 85mm? Or 24mm 50mm 85? I wonder what your thoughts if you shot an 85mm for a year and portraits?
Hey! I could try to do some more comparison videos. I have shot with the 85mm on a 35mm film camera. And I like the results I got. I did a video comparing the results with a 50mm lens here:
czcams.com/video/iMZKV88YM_g/video.html
Hi Dan do you think that the A6000 is good enough (with good glass and technique) for wedding work ?
Yes, I shot a wedding with it over the summer and my clients loved the photos
Great videos Dan!!! I started trying to figure all the lens numbers, camera settings out and your videos have been a great help. I have a question: I want to own a broad range of lenses, well a couple for different types of photos. I have the 35mm f1.8, the kits lens and the sony 55-210... I keep hearing great things about the 50mm, but feel that it is too similar to the 35mm and perhaps getting a sigma 16mm 1.4 to have a wide angle lens..... would the sigma be a better choice? thanks!!!
A bit of everything... mostly portrait, landscape and out on the street. I am going to trying learning how to do night trails this week...or i should say for the next two weeks or more ...lol until i can get it!
Yeah maybe go with the 16 then. The 35 is good for portraits. And it looks like you're covered on the telephoto end. So having a fast wide angle for landscapes, astro, and night photography would be a good move
I am looking to purchase the exact setup you have, Glad to read that you are happy with it. I have been contemplating for weeks but im buying the 55-210 and the 35 mm as well. I was originally planning on the 18-105 and 50, but i think i like the better zoom and the flexibility of the 35mm. Thanks!
Thank you sir
I just don’t see much a difference. I’d like to know your thoughts on the FE 85 1.8. I own the 35 and it’s on my camera almost 100% of the time. Even for $200 I just don’t see the need for the 50. I had an 85 when I shot canon and loved it.
The 85 is a good lens too. It's a bit too cropped-in for my tastes on the A6000 but it's great for headshot style portraits.
If you're happy with the 35 then there's no real compelling reason to get the 50. I also shoot with the 35mm about 95% of the time.
Still in dilemma, to choose. Like to shoot portraits and group photos. Please suggest me. Will go for that. Think portraits looks good in 50mm
I prefer the 35mm. But you can do it with a 50 for sure. Just have to step back a bit further when you're shooting group pics to fit everyone in the frame
Thanks Dan Bullman , Thanks for your quick reply, I will select 35mm. I like to shoot group photos comfortably in tight spaces.
What picture profile do you use for all these shots taken with the 35mm
I set the profile to Camera Neutral and then do all the color editing in post-processing
Hiiare you there i am waiting for new video
I have a 50mm f/1.7 pentax film lens, so I'm leaning towards the 35mm or possibly 28mm f/2 full frame lens.
+Fernand J Both of those are good options. I would go with the 35 over the 28.
In my opinion the 35 makes the subject looks more flattering
I actually JUST picked up BOTH of these lenses. I'm already partial to the 35mm as well! After recently buying these two lenses...what would you go with next
+OhMydia Depends on what you wanna shoot. The two lenses I got after this one are the Sony 20mm f/2.8 and the Rokinon 12mm f/2. Both of which I used for street photography and cityscapes
Big fan on the Sigma 16mm 1.4 .... Costs around $450 (50% more than the rokinon), but if you use your camera for video as well you will definitely appreciate having autofocus
I love 50mm
If i want to take full body shot with maximum blur then which of these should i use??
On a Full Frame 35mm is The Best !
So the 50mm will be good for headshots , I take a lot of pictures for my barbering page ,so u recommend the 50 for headshots right .
Wanted to buy 50mm then Amazon decided dude we give you 35mm for 50€ more, do you want it 🤣
I AGREE THAT A 35MM IS MORE VERSATILE THAN A 50MM ON A FULL FRAME SENSOR !
I think it’s worth buying both 😂
super sharp? 1:43 looks like a dvd image.....and im watching this on a 4k monitor!
No use, there is no info in this video about why focus length matters for portraits.
You spelled Sharp wrong...it's not SHAWP, it's SHAAAHP. Yah welcome...from a fellow Bostonian. :)
Now I'm confused !!!! 😩😩😩😩
Dan Bullman Photography yes , idk if I should go but the budget friendly or should I just wait and save for the 400 one ;( I have the kit lenses but I don't like that in low light is not very sharp ;/
