I'm 72 years old and to me Sohyang is the best singer I've ever heard. She has been through so much in her life. She got married at 20 years old and soon after she was diagnosed with Uterine Cancer and was able to survive but rendered infertile. She is a devout Christian and gave God the credit for her surviving the cancer. She first began singing in her local community, with no aspirations of pursuing a career as a professional singer. She has turned down many offers from major record companies, because it would interfere with the plan God gave her, that is to use her voice to comfort people who are going through difficult times. Sohyang is not only beautiful on the outside, but more important she is beautiful on the inside.

Sohyang, the world's best singer
She has mixed up to a D6. Her team say her top note is a D7. G5 is her super easy comfort note she hits a lot. She does not use any whistle notes. She may be able to, but you will never see her so it live or on a recording. She is way better than Mariah and all the rest in my opinion. She started singing at age 19. She is now 46 I believe and still has not lost anything. With her prestige training, she can sing any genre, even does a rap song where she rap/sings. Super fast and super precise. He range in this song we just heard is high for most, but not for her.

I am not even a fan of the diva genre. I love the blues and rock much more. But when I discovered Sohyang 3 years back at the age of 61 there was no denying she was the greatest singer I had ever heard and I generally listen to her every day. There is no one like her. Period. 💘

She is incredible technically but you hit the nail on the head when you talked about her presence on the stage. She radiates an essential goodness that's impossible to fake - she connects with the song and her audience that make her performances a communal experience that is unique. It still amazes me that, having seen pretty much every Sohyang performance there is, this incredible song is somewhere in the middle for me, not even in my top 10. That's simply how good she is.
Thank God, So Hyang has recovered from testing positive for Covid19 last month. She is looking more beautiful and sounding even better, if that's even possible. She has a compromised immune system. During her cancer surgery decades ago, she needed a blood transfusion, which resulted in her contracting hepatitis b or c. In recent years, So Hyang has battled numerous bouts with pnuemonia. (Eight times between 2016 - 2018). At one point, she believed her singing career was over. If you continue on the So Hyang music journey, there are at least three performances where she was not well, still recovering from pneumonia. Every time, she gave another master class performance. So Hyang has proven, her technique is ROCK SOLID!!

As you now know, you have hit upon the unknown super star of the singing world. Sohyang just defies description. If you can sing like Sohyang, the world will beat a path to your door. And it has in Sohyang's case. I hope you take the time to read the bio I posted below so you can truly enjoy this astonishing singer and human being. She is truly something else altogether.
Here is what David Foster had to say about Sohyang in an interview with Naver on December 10, 2018, only a week after doing eight concerts with her at Tokyo's Blue Note Club.
“I wanted to meet her very much, and I am happy to have collaborated in putting together a concert. Here is how I got to know about Sohyang. Oprah Winfrey introduced me to 'a stunningly amazing singer whose video is a must watch.' I fell in love at once with Sohyang's first video I watched on CZcams, 'I Have Nothing.' It was thrilling, and I searched to listen to most of her other songs as well. I have wanted to meet her for a long time. She is one of the top divas I've come across."
David Foster didn't hold back praises. "Her voice is very beautiful and overwhelming, and I found her every performance to be emotionally moving and amazing. Moving forward, I want to collaborate again!"

We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks five languages: Korean, English, French, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading Greek!

She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: czcams.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/video.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 44 on April 5, 2022, though in Korean culture she would be 45 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international attention from the performances being posted on CZcams.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on CZcams and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted Sohyang and went to Japan in order to have her perform eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for some of her songs, wrote "I Have Nothing", her most iconic song, and is the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places Sohyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas.

She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!

“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via CZcams, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소향--Sohyang--has several meanings.
• First is a type of Korean traditional music.
• Second is to burn incense on a burner.
• Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today. Sohyang is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. Yet for the definitive answer Sohyang has stated in an interview that her name means "enjoy the light." Her grandmother named her.

Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer Sohyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. In addition, she is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" "about one hundred times" when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has an outgoing and bubbly personality.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently!
Though she is less than 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.

If you really want to hear an absolute vocal herculean effort, and go on an absolute emotional rollercoaster, her song Everyone is an absolute must. I don't know that there is another vocalist that can pull it off.
I prefer Lim Jae Bum's version on I am a Singer, but it has an entirely different feel
Glad to see the holy golden cow make an appearance. That was fun to watch. You should watch Sohyang's performance of "Everyone" speaking of something few singers on the planet could do. It's at the top of my list for most epic performances ever.

great reaction I'm a 46 year old metal head I found sohyang thru reaction channels and I have to say for me and my ears personally she Is the top of the class of female singers right now...she truly is so technically good but more than that she is so emotionally connected to what she I singing about that she puts u in almost a trance and you have no choice but to go on the vocal journey she has prepared..her performance of "everyone" I have yet to see another performance of its caliber..it is technically ridiculous but I have never experienced such a satisfying and complete journey and understanding what her battle with cancer was like until I saw that⁰. it is masterclass level and really the most beautiful song I've ever heard up till now....but she also absolutely slays her two covers of Whitney Houston I have nothing and I will always love u...I have heard so many bad covers of I have nothing that I did not like the song anymore..till i heard soyhang....what she does with it had me In tears...and her I will always love you cover really really is stripped down to her and a piano and fabulously showcases the huge array of timbre and tambres she has in her vocal range the best way to describe it is watching her sing it was like watching Bob Ross paint a masterpiece..it's all just such fluid mastery over her gift that my jaw is left on the floor and usually teared up everytime I watch her perform and not just the first time I'm talking I still get chills and some of these performances I've watched over a hundred times...I've never reacted so strongly to a voice before ...I think she is just an angel

Oh, by the way. Sohyang squeezed all of her sessions with Seth Riggs into a short vacation she had in the US back around 2010 or so. She had so few sessions with Seth Riggs, I think three at most, that Sohyang herself condensed what she learned from him into "learning how to hit a note precisely." Other than that Sohyang is a 100% self taught singer, believe it or not. Her IQ must be enormous. 🤷♂

You have just witnessed a small sample of the flexibility in her voice. Her range is RIDICULOUS and her breath control is INSANE and UNMATCHED. Vocal coaches and opera singers agree, So Hyang's technique is EFFORTLESS and FLAWLESS. Trust and believe, every note is well placed and intentional. So Hyang, along with her husband and some assistants, arranges every aspect of her live performances;. the music, backing vocals, staging, etc. in my never to be humble opinion, So Hyang's song covers, often times, makes the original sound like a demo tape.
So Hyang updates and elevates the song, given it additional shine and polish.

Welcome to Sohyang's world. I'm not sure why people compare her to Mariah as she does not whistle. I would say closer to Barbra and Whitney, but she is her own person. She remains an independent artist and not that well known in the west due to her faith and her health as a cancer survivor.

I recently just came into listening to Sohyang and have heard about her but never knew about the sheer stage performance and presence she brings with that heavenly gift she was bestowed with. She definitely came from humble beginnings growing up and throughout the challenges, held tight to her faith and voice to give back to others through music. This cover song alongside, You Raise Me Up, definitely one of the best live performances I've heard in recent memories. I cannot wait to hear more from her- I should go and explore her music.

Kim, So Hyang (stage name: Sohyang) is a South Korean singer. She's up there with Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion, according to David Foster, who worked with all of them, plus other big names in the music industry, such as Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, and Michael Jackson. In fact, many vocal coaches and critics call her the Queen, and Dimash the King.

BTW, Whitney's former manager saw the DMC Festival video of Sohyang singing "I Have Nothing", and contacted Oprah Winfrey, who in turn, contacted David Foster. They were all amazed. Foster invited her to sing on his tour in Asia. She did 8 shows in 4 days in Tokyo. Foster co-wrote that song. He arranged and produced it for Whitney for her album, and her performance in "The Bodyguard". Foster has won 16 Grammy Awards, including 3 for Producer of the Year, and has been nominated a total of 47 times.

Also if you haven't heard Lara Fabian especially from Lara with love concert she's the other on a whole nother level. Look at Adagio thumbnails for her. Dimash idolizes her. There's a video of her singing in 12 languages too.

So-hyang is my favorite vocalist ever, but if you want to hear another AMAZING Korean singer then checkout "Song So-hee, Tearful Duman River." She is a traditional Korean singer who's vocal technique will leave you full of emotion. The referenced song starts with her walking to an area on stage that represents the shore of the river. She takes off her shoes and places them on the river bank. This is simbolic in Asian culture that she is going to end her life there by drowning in the river. The song is about a woman who went to the river to meet her fiancee only to find he was killed as a rebel against the Japanese occupation. The song and her voice will rip out your heart at her anguish over her lost love

Btw, since you will come back to her more, I don't know who's spreading that her name is pronounced "SoYoung," that is totally wrong even though it is a very common Korean name, "Sohyang" is much cooler. Her name is in the video, the first sentence in the video says her name. Her name is pronounced So H (make h sound) + Yah (as in Yahoo! without h sound) + ng sound. This was her performance on Immortal Songs 2, a competition show where pros go up against each other and the audience votes for the best performance. If you want to check out longer videos Killing Voice is a series that features one singer/group per video without distracting stage production. And Fantastic Duo was a show where average Koreans could apply to singer with a singer they admired. It's been years since the show aired, but I keep coming back to the clips.
