    Video Summary:
    At a deep level, happiness is an elusive state that few actually achieve. What we typically mistake for happiness is actually just excitement as a result of external stimuli. There's certainly no shortage of stimuli in our world today. We have literally become addicted to the elevated mood we get from daring feats, exceptional food, an absorbing movie, or cruising the internet. When that thrill is over, we are already hungering for the next.
    Our ego encourages us to stay on this unending roller coaster ride of highs and lows, telling us that's just the nature of life. In truth, we've become creators of the drama in our life on which we're now hooked. Devoid of stimulation, our body goes into withdrawal much like that of an addict. Our minds have grown lazy with all the easy thrills, and we've distorted the arc of our life with all these cheap diversions.
    Unfortunately, true happiness is an inside job. To find it, we must first unplug and seek it. Meditation and deep contemplation will shrink the ego's influence so that we can find inner peace.

    This very bright video can be summed up in the words of miss stacie orrico, who's got a song that also acts as a proof that pop music can have a lot of meaning behind the lyrics: "there's gotta be more to life than chasing down every temporary high to satisfy me".
    i completely agree with every single word in this video, and i find it funny how much i've progressed spiritually within the last year- a year ago i might've not been able to understand any of this. but now i do. the happiest i've been in a while was a few months ago when i found the happiness within me, that glowing serenity, that sense of "being" rather than "becoming"... and it felt like TRUE happiness, because it wasn't dependent on anything external...nothing at all. it was just sheer gratitude for existing. best feeling ever.

We both dropped out of school, and are working to achieve higher levels of self development. We see past many things, and have questioned many things, and gotten great answers from ourselves. I'm a bit sad knowing all of this l, and being surrounded by people who don't wabt to understand, but I understand where they come from so I accept them as they are and that puts my mind at ease and less stressed, allowing me to think at higher levels. I can't wait to try your exercise. I have seperates myself from alot of stimulation, and I'm proud of the progress I've made. My family finds me a more annoying person now, Some people are just living to live , not really searching a for something greater. I'm trying to figure myself out and understand my past so that I can br at ease, and happy living in yhe moment. Its a miracle for you to exist. I am very greatfull for your existence. Teach others by example. U can compromise ur own self development getting too involved in trying to help others. Sometimes saying something short and sweet goes miles with ppl compared to very detailed explanations. It depends, cause some ppl don't care, don't have even a basic understanding of these things so it'll go way over their head, some ppl don't want to help themselves. Something short and sweet like, u think too much. Or u need to be greatful to have wht u have. Or, I don't let nothing bother me..... And be the example by just doing u.... And it'll get ppl thinking, re-evaluating. And if they're smart they'll want to do those things too. But it's subjective to who ur talking to but in my experience so many ppl don't even have a basic understanding of what he's talking about, sadly u'll just be wasting ur time, time u can use to live urself, meditate, train ur mind, be at peace, etc.

    I was the mouse in the wheel, running for my whole life, thinking I will catch the cheese - happiness. It was always temporary and sometimes self-destructive.
    About a year ago I realized that the results can't give me long lasting happiness, I've started questioning my perception about life and everything and especially my "precious" mind. It turns out the greatest disasters came from a mind that wasn't well programmed. I am not a newbie, but still have a long way to go in changing that.

      I guess "extremely advanced" is synonymous with "extremely simple."
      This video was WAYYYY too wordy and long for what you said. You just kept repeating yourself over and over and over, giving more and more examples of the same thing. We get it. We know what stimulation means, you don't need to give 20 examples.
      Allow me to save everyone 25 minutes of their life: "Happiness is not stimulation/excitement. Happiness is peace and contentment." Great, thanks. I already know that.
      You want an "extremely advanced" description of your philosophy, something which really gets to the truth? Here it is: "Happiness is not dopamine, it is serotonin." There, end of story. And if you want to experience Happiness AKA "peace and contentment" just pop a xanax and it will influence your GABA receptors and you will know what he is talking about. But you can't fill those receptors on your own. No amount of learning or effort or meditation or philosophy is going to change your brain from an anxious, neurotic, depressed state into a happy, peaceful, contented state. And that is because your brain is an object bound by deterministic laws of physics and you can't change chemicals in the brain using thoughts. That is confusing the effect for the cause.

    How about a nice warm bath in the dark?
    I would do that.
    My mind goes crazy - I know this - it wants to produce and warns me that the day is passing and that doing absolutely nothing will eventually kill me. So I start to feel this time pressure. The more time that goes by...the more I get this anxiety.

    I thought this video was extremely interesting. The definition of happiness which you've exposed in this video is exactly what I perceived it to be before watching this. I can see how many people would lack knowing the distinction between happiness and excitement.
    I've had moments where i've just laid in my bed, in COMPLETE contentment, without any stimulation. I can say that sometimes being excited about things certainly boosts my happiness, considering that would be logical… However, with, or without any stimulations, this contentment does not fade. Even if something perceivably shitty happens, I tend to get over things a LOT quicker than really anyone I know , and that is because i'm so content with myself. When I was younger, I didn't understand what true happiness was, so back then was when it was essentially all based around excitement.. this was a good start though, because it trained my brain to feel good, and so i attracted more good.. In result, I grew into appreciating everything as is, not NEEDing any thing to justify my happiness. I came to this big realization a couple years ago.. and my happiness level has not faded.

    • @isabellerezazadeh1185

    • @ActualizedOrg
      @ActualizedOrg  Před 10 lety +8

      Excellent! Make sure you keep it.
      It's very interesting because I remember a time in late highschool and through college where I felt really truly happy. I was so immersed in school work and I felt awesome because the school work basically built up my prefrontal cortex so much that I had very strong control over my emotions. I was also doing something I felt was deeply important: philosophy. Objectively-speaking though, at that time, my life was shit. I had no friends, didn't date, was fat, ate very unhealthy, watched TV and played tons of videogames, had no direction in life, and had no money.
      Once I got out of college and joined the workforce, that happiness quickly faded as I faced challenges to earn money. I stopped intense studying so my willpower atrophied.
      Today my life is so much more rounded and improved it's frankly hard to even imagine how I lived in the old days. Yet still, there was something magical about the highschool days that I'm still not able to tap into.
      I think kids and even teens are able to more easily tap into genuine happiness than most adults. Sometimes as the mind ages it can get weighed down with the hardships of life. I forced myself to break my integrity when I joined the workforce, and that was VERY costly to my happiness. I still haven't fully recovered from that. Once you break integrity, it's very hard to go back.

  • @davidmadisontheguardian

    Oh, I forgot to say that people began coming up to me and saying, "You look different for some reason. I can't quite place it." One person told me that I seemed to be radiating some kind of a light. I couldn't see it. But it was weird that these comments, which I had never heard before my 27th year alive, came so suddenly and in quick succession to that meditation.
    You truly do have a powerful impact. I feel it. Usually I can tell if people are faking something. Warning bells start to go off and I get this uneasy feeling; but you kept looking right into my eyes (viewers eyes) with this intensity and deliberate need to communicate what you had discovered. I could feel this compassion coming from you laced with a firm resolve to transmute resistance to inspired action.
    I only wish that I had that kind of effect. People tell me that I can be magnetic. Dad told me that I would be a leader of leaders one day; but there has been no consistency to those claims.
    One day, I came into a temp job like I had been for about a week, with gallon jug of water and my green skivvy Marine t-shirt. I was hyped up and excitedly going on about something that had just happened. A bunch of people caught that excitement and it caused them to smile, laugh and joke around...becoming just more lively. The manager came to me halfway through my shift, I think it was, and told me that I had a gift for motivating people, and he wanted to focus that gift toward the job. He wanted to make me Supervisor.
    I turned it down. The employees spread rumors that turned out to be not far from the truth, that the company was headed down hill. About a month or two after I quit, I found out that it had dissolved. I sensed before hand that something wasn't right and got the hell out of there. I think back over those times when I got compliments for courage or inspiring others and intend to consciously do that at will.

  • @JoshMortlock
    @JoshMortlock Před 10 lety +1

    I think your distinction between excitement and happiness made an awful lot of sense, and made me realise the things that I thought made me genuinely "happy" are in fact just part of that never-ending chase for a high. Things wearing clothes that suit me, walking in the park and even spending time with my family are just pieces of cheese to use your metaphor.
    I don't personally think that I'm bold enough to try and take away the hold that my ego has on my life, but nonetheless I feel enlightened having watched this video. Like you said, I know better now and will in future be able to recognise times when I am truly happy from when I am excited.

    • @ActualizedOrg
      @ActualizedOrg  Před 10 lety

      Yup, you're on the right track. That's how it goes. You will slowly realize with more and more life experience that the things you really wanted are not going to really do it for you, and so your habits and tastes start to change.
      For example, I would NEVER do drugs. I have zero desire to do them because I know they will not fulfill me at all. But many people out there feel that drugs are fulfilling. With time, they will evolve to see that they were mistaken. Then they'll get hooked on TV and think that is really fulfilling. But then they'll realize TV is really no better than drugs. And on and on it will go. Your desires will evolve to more humanistic ones.
      As this happens, the quality of your life and your performance will skyrocket!
      It's very good to actually observe yourself being happy. Be conscious of what really makes you happy and why. You will be shocked. Most of us haven't really explored happiness 1st hand.

Ironically I usually end up in that trap because others try to convince me that happiness is in having a nice house, a car a this a that. Dear Leo,
    I am one of the people who thinks there is a lot of truth in this video. But I have a question. If true happiness" means being at peace and indifferent to any external stimuli, then does that mean we shouldn't have any passions or purposes in life? Wouldn't the highest, most ultimate form happiness be one where we just do nothing all the time? Because aren't purposes or goals also a form of stimuli?

    • @ActualizedOrg
      @ActualizedOrg  Před 9 lety +5

      There is actually nothing wrong with stimuli as long as you master your attachments to it. If you can be happy doing nothing, you will be just fine with any kind of stimuli and your passions will be true. That is very different from the false passions you have now. These false passions are ego defense mechanisms that constant keep you on the run from being still.

    • @theperson6929
      @theperson6929 Před 9 lety +1

      Actualized.org To play devil's advocate for a sec... If we disassociate ourselves from all the stimuli we encounter in life (we are in no way stimulated by it), then there really is no point in pursuing said stimuli, right? We achieve nothing beyond what we would have done if we had have done nothing. In that sense, would it not be fair to say that in your paradigm Leo "the highest, most ultimate form happiness is [indeed] one where we just do nothing all the time"? At the very least, there doesn’t seem to be an argument for doing anything else…

    I watched this video a few days back and I cant stop thinking about it! After endless hours of debate with myself about achieving life ambitions V a life devoted to meditation/being happy etc. (as this was my main confusion) I seem to have come to a conclusion for myself and wanted to know your own thoughts on this. (feel free to disagree) So...
    In life we don't need any temporary stimulation to be truly happy including that of achieving dreams and ambitions, however, if we are content with ourselves and know and practice this fact truly there is nothing damaging with still pursuing what we want in life if we accept that there will be no long term advantages to our mental state?

    • @pida9669
      @pida9669 Před 5 lety

      We are programmed to thrive and survive, individually and as a community. That is our genetic mission. We are not programmed to just sit there and meditate all day long, disconnect from everything, and just focus on trying to achieve "happiness." Look at the rest of the animal kingdom for inspiration -- do birds and bees give up chasing worms and flowers, choosing instead to meditate and seek universal truths? Yes, we can pursue our dreams and our passions, even if we know that we will never achieve lasting "happiness" (which I call "pleasure," or what Leo calls "excitement"). In fact, that's the only way to properly live.

    This is brilliant! I have to say that I am NOT a fan of a lot of his stuff but I am intrigued enough to poke around his videos. Whenever people ask me how I am I always reply "normal"...I am neither happy nor sad, I'm just trying to be in a constant state of "being". A lot of my past has been challenging and the future presents a lot of potential anxiety. Happiness seems to be a person, place, thing, etc...A MOMENT, it's NOT something you attain, it's NOT a state of being. Human beings are only happy when things go their way and when they don't, the thing or person that once made them happy will become a source of contention. People are so backwards, when I say I'm "normal", to most people that means i'm the opposite of happy which is sad or depressed. I also have to add I'm not attached to most things or people, for me that's a huge part of not getting sucked into the happiness vortex.

    That's why when I visited Keyna on a school trip I saw that the people living the most austere lifestyles were incredibly happy, kind and at peace with the world. Whereas peoples of the first world who live very consumerist lifestyles are so egotistical, self centred and ultimately unhappy whilst looking at the world in such conflicting and hostile eyes. Hence your video would certainly be a good manifestation of that situation.

    I did not find this hard to understand at all. This has got to be one of the most profound videos I've seen in a while. I've really been struggling with what happiness is. This video has filled what that missing piece was. So many of us are unhappy because we mistake Excitement for Happiness. Our problem is that our definition of Happiness is mislead by our peers and our society. How did you come to this realization Leo? This is truly profound. It is funny how often times, the simplest of ideas often comes out to be the most profound.

  • @sngscratcher

    Excellent video! And yes, I agree that this expanded experience of happiness is only achieved via a spiritual path that takes us on a journey of inner growth. The people who are not getting your message, I believe, are likely still caught up in the idea of having fun fun fun! When you’re young (me included), it’s always: “What can I do to have a blast today! And there is nothing wrong with this. It is a completely normal stage for young people to go through who have been “conditioned” by this culture. People who grow up in more spiritual cultures, on the other hand, are naturally taught to look inward at a young age in order to seek personal spiritual growth, and to learn to care more deeply about other people.
    I think this is what the stereotypical “Western” mid-life crisis is all about: reaching a point where we realize that all of our chasing of external goals - whether we achieve them or not - does not make us happy and fulfilled. This is the point when many people in our culture begin to look for more meaning in life, often through a spiritual practice. And embarking on a spiritual path doesn’t mean we stop enjoying life, either. In fact, I find the “external stimuli of life” to be far more pleasurable than they used to be when I was younger because I have learned how to savor these experiences in order to get the most out of them. This is not an either/or proposition; it is more like both/and (and better all around!).
    It’s not in our efforts of trying to get more (pleasure. “ego strokes,” etc.); it is in our very real inner journey of becoming more than we once were, on the deepest level, and the resulting increased compassion we have for other people and greater sense of personal inner peace that is the key to our lasting happiness. Cheers.

    When I was a young child at around ten or eleven, I would go to parties at friend's houses and they would be running around playing games. I would go off by myself and sit on the grass. They would sometimes come over and ask what was wrong but nothing was wrong. It was sunny. I was near my friends and I was, largely, undisturbed. As an adult, I have spent a lot of time chasing stimulation. Boy, have I chased it. I still do. I do occasionally manage to sit still for a while. I often think I should meditate more, or wish that I could. I had an experience earlier this year, where I felt happy. It was reminiscent of how I felt as a child. I was walking near some cows. In that moment, I felt like I wouldn't need enlightenment. I wouldn't need anything more than what I had. The feeling passed. I SAY that I'd like to get it back but I know that to do that, I'd have to beat my ego. Easier said than done :) hahaha.

    I can totally relate to the stimulus and excitement seeking. I’ve tried different drugs but the most powerful “drug” for me was falling for someone. The date and sex felt like a fantasy, a dream, a highlight of my life. After those 2months came to an end it felt like my world fell apart. I was weaker physically mentally. I was so full of drive while I was on this drug of lust/love that when it was gone I didn’t know what the point of life was. Funny thing is prior to being dumped I notice how I needed this person more and more. So desperate for attention. I was risking doing crazy impractical things to travel and live with this person. Never in my life have I wanted to fight so hard for something I desired so bad. My “withdrawal symptoms” were/are not feeling good or worthy, fear of missing out, fantasy of sacrificing my life for this person, to much of my self worth fell into me being able to please this person. It still lingers in me to some degree. The feeling of wanting to relive that wild rollercoaster of emotions even though they weren’t peaceful. The rollercoaster of that reply, that video call, my whole day revolved around it. From questioning my worth, to getting so exited for that dose of feeling worthy enough for “the best person in the world”. Every interaction with this person was my dose of feeling worthy/self esteem boost. The crashes came faster. I guess this is how a cocain addict must feel addict and I know I need to start finding my peace. A question I’m left with is why do we discover our drug/fix only when we are introduced to it? Why does it reveal our emotional turmoil and then temporarily fix it. Did this problem always existed in me and just reveal it to me or did “the drug” create the problem?

    I am someone who has happiness, I learned this during my late teens and I am now in my mid twenties. What I find is that it is more important to satisfy needs; social, sexual, mental and physical. I have a need to keep learning and test my knowledge and skills, I have a need to be with other people and express myself, and a need to exercise, etc. I used to struggle with recognizing what I actually need in my life, and I found it was hard to recognize them because I was drowning them in addictions.

This summer I was working to sell subway and bus fares(tickets?) and I was forced to spend a lot of time by myself and think a lot since the only distraction I could have were books and music. I gotta say I agree with most of what you said and that excitements in our daily lives is an addiction. However I have to say that I don't think having ups and downs are necessarily a bad thing. If you don't have crappy days, you'd never know when you have a good day cause you'd have nothing to compare it to. Also, wanting more and striving for the next thing is a good habit. Maybe our ego just automatically makes us feel incomplete because it yields progressive results. If you never wanted for anything you wouldn't be driven to achieve the things you have. And the last thing is about that little moment of peace and fulfillment that you get after you reach your goal. Maybe this applies only to me but I enjoy the act of getting there. The excitement in the build up is far more rewarding than the fulfillment in the end. Ups and downs. Learn to love them. They are a part of life and proof that you are alive. Seeking balance and a constant flow of fulfillment will just dull out the lovely anxieties, disappointments and excitements that life has to offer. And in the end those are the moments you remember and they are worth living for.
    But different strokes for different folks. Just an opinion of mine pew pew

    To sum up what I thought this video said and some of my own thoughts. I think it's important that we are content, and happy before we do these exciting things. We must first be happy internally and not always depend on external situations and things to determine our happiness. Like a child who wants a toy, he finally gets it and is happy, but a day later, that happiness is forgotten and they want more toys. Never satisfied. We must be satisfied first. Being alive and breathing is something huge to be grateful for. Gratefulness leads me personally to always find something to be happy about.

I been resisting it but after events within the last few days I'm ready to work on my growth even more particularly on finding the root causes to all my negative emotions especially anger and cure it for good so I don't feel powerless to my emotions anymore . I enjoyed your video on anger also. One thing I'm not sure on is after I truly discover the root causes to my fears and negative emotions, how do I go about releasing and actually treating them. Any advice would be appreciated and have a blessed day.

    I’m convinced of the concept of happiness you’ve described. Looking forward to grasp happiness one day, real happiness, I know it’d would take tons of time, but I’m ready for it.

    Absolutely fucking correct. No car, amount of cash, type of wife/husband/lover, power, fame, etc. can bring happiness. I've learned that happiness can ONLY be found within..and it makes me really sad to see people I care about suffering, because of the grip their egos have on them. Nothing I can do about it though; they're supposed to be the way they are...

    As you mentioned this video is not for everyone and I really suggest people that are not prepared also are not in a stable phase of life not to watch, I would say this video explains everything all in once, but really requires months of preparation and working on basics before watching. This can lead to true and ultimate happiness but if not ready it can develop hopelessness, lack of motivation, depression and emptiness.
    Amazing, I see your thoughts very very philosophical,
    True, it's the monkey brain creating the ups and downs and makes you chase one thing after another seeking happiness.
    It suddenly disapproves all the methods we have developed by life to become happy. It makes you feel the excitements and lows are all illusions.

    Thank you Leo, this is life changing. It's time to shrink that ego and admit to the truth.
