- How to insert an indwelling urinary (Foley) catheter on a male patient using a BARD kit. Inserting a Foley catheter is a clinical nursing skill that you will learn in nursing school and practice in the real world of nursing.
When inserting an indwelling urinary catheter on a male patient, there are some steps you might perform differently as compared to a female patient, including different steps in cleaning the genital area (peri-care), inserting up to the bifurcation of the catheter tubing, securing the Foley catheter tubing into a securement device, and so forth.

Before performing any nursing skill, it is important to verify and follow your facility's protocols, as some steps may vary based on location, equipment used, and so forth.

I don't do this often, but I have to say this to show my appreciation for what you've done for me personally. My first Patho test I received a 51%. For my next exam I studied only you and my textbook religiously. I just got my second Patho exam back and I got an 84%. You are honestly a life saver, Nurse Sarah, and helping me gain the confidence to show myself I can pass nursing school. I appreciate everything you do for us future nurses
Perfect timing for the video to come. I had to insert a foley yesterday, so I’m watching this for refine the skill and better practice.
Hi Sarah! Maybe at some point you could also do a video on male suprapubic catheter insertion which may be a little more complicated because of the surgical ostomy involved. Anyway, I love your very instructive videos and keep up the great work.
Wow ! Bravo that was excellent
Thanks again

Hello. How often and in which scenarios an anesthetic (such as Cathejell) is used before catheter insertion?
One thing...and only because I see it with telemetry electrodes...if your patient is Mr. Chewbacca please please PLEASE clip the body hair in the area before cleaning and applying the lock.
Thank you so much, you’re the best ✊
Thank a lot ❤❤😊😊
Thank you
Thank you so much 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Can you please explain if by placing the long-term catheter on the lower abdomen will it cause a back flow of urine to the bladder?
Hello. If the lower abdomen is used for placement of the securement device (due to long-term placement of the catheter), the drainage bag would need to be adjusted in a way that helps gravity drain the urine. It is usually placed at the side of the patient below the bladder rather than at the foot of the bed. If you are unsure of the proper placement, please check your facility's protocol for more detail.
Excellent
Good
