Hey I have a question so I’m going in the Air Force and I know you have to be in the dorms on base and everything. I was wondering how long did it take for you to be able to get your own apartment? and how were you able to get your own apartment after being in the dorms on base ? Like how does that type of situation works?

i was in the dorms for a year and some change, but sometimes you can move out early if you out on SRA (E-4) or if the base dorms are over capacity or if your married. For me i was able to move out because it was over capacity and im sewing on Sra in aug so i was bound to move out soon anyways
I only lived in the dorms for about 6 months at my first duty station when I was picked to move off base overseas. I’m a single E3, no dependents. It’s really all about luck and who you know. Not only was my base short on dorms, but my shirts and leadership really liked me because I made myself noticed in my squadron with a lot of face time through volunteering. They knew I was an older Airman too so that sometimes determines if you can live off base. I also thought it was for SrA only but I got picked over a lot of them(I was actually still an E2 when I got picked) granted, there are a handful of A1Cs,single, no dependents living off base from my shop alone. I did luck out in the aspect that housing was accepting any person the shirt recommended rather than go by TIG/TIS, which they fixed shortly after I already moved out! But it’s all dependent on base and your command
I got my notification to move out a few days before my 5mo mark at my first duty station due to the rooms over filling too quickly... it has a lot of factors
