      One thing I’d add: on my first wash, I used soap and water. Everything was rinsing well. When getting ready to put everything away after it was dry, I was noticed the shower head silicone/metal separated. Did so and found soap bubbles still there. So just be cautious if you use hand wash with soap to separate those two pieces. It can be a hassle as they fit so snug, but it’s better than brewing soapy espresso!!!

      I somehow lost my ‘travel coffee kit’ which consisted of a Nanopresso and Porlex mini. I have just purchased the Picopresso and Porlex Mini2. 18.5g of beans, pre-heat (pumped through), re-fill, 8 pumps, 5 sec pre infusion, pulled the double shot and WOW. Very impressive! My Picopresso arrived yesterday and I made my first espresso this morning. Wow! I am blown away by how good the espresso tasted! Seriously put my Profitec Pro 700 to shame. I have the nanopresso and thought it produced ok espresso 'in the field', but never enough and was very fiddly to use, particularly filling and tamping the tiny basket. The Picopresso is simple to use and proscribed method to fill the basket and tamp leaves a flat bed of coffee grounds. Whatsmore, it comes with a case and everything packs away into the unit. Wacaco you have done it. Wherever I go this is coming with me. [I ground my coffee with the Timemore Slim plus (E&B burrs)].

    Is equal quality espresso possible between 15g and 20g of grounds if less than 20g is our preference? Or must 20g be used for it to work optimally and the excess separated on the extraction - for example is an extraction using 16g compromised with let's say a 32 ml output?

      Great question! Adn in my experience using it - I would say no not at all - to a limit - just like using any espresso basket where there a min and max capacity - You will want to adjust your grind if using a lower or higher dose than 18g, as I had to do for 20g - having to grind a fraction coarser - but almost unnoticeable.

      They are all very close in retrospect of tasting the coffee. I would say the pressure from the Picopresso is far higher than what you can achieve using the Aeropress. But the workflow on the aeropress is easier and faster in general. And the Picopresso will essentially only do espresso - and does it very well... whilst the Aeropress has many ways you can brew with it..

    Hi. What do you think are the big advantages compared to Nanopresso? And would you recommend anyone who has a Nanopresso upgrade to Picopresso?

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  Před 3 lety +22

      Hey Joshua - that all depends on whether you're satisfied with the Nanopresso or not I suppose. The advantages are very similar in terms of each brews benefits - lightweight, compact brewing of concentrated coffee - the Picopresso is certainly way ahead of the Nanopresso in terms of it being an 'espresso brewer' though.. larger dose, larger basket and better overall extraction leading to more crema and a stringer shot. You also need to consider the ability to grind to an espresso grind prior to purchasing the Picopresso... The nanopresso gets away with being a pressurised portafilter - so grind size, whilst important - is not critical.. with the Picopresso - you wont see any improvements in the coffee by using the same grind as the Nanopresso.. You need to be able to grind finer to brew on the Picopresso - if you can - than yes I would say you will be more satisfied with the quality of the coffee produced with the Picopresso.

    • @mnimdp
      @mnimdp Před 2 lety +3

      @@kodoklengket i have had the nanopresso for a while now, I want to say maybe about a year. I travel a lot for work, and use it for when I'm away. Honestly, after seeing this review I'm regretting having bought the nanopresso and wish this one was available at the time. I always make double shots, so I had to buy the barista kit. When you consider the price of the nano plus the barista kit, you're almost at the same price as the picopresso. I haven't seen the picopresso in person, but the fact that the basket is so much wider and metal is very appealing. The double baskets in the nanopresso are smaller, not only in capacity (16g vs 20g) but they have a narrow opening and are taller than wider. It's annoying to fill them with the coffee grounds, and while I appreciate that you can use a lid on them so you can carry them already filled with coffee, the one in the picopresso looks like it will give you better results (if you can grind your own coffee to how fine it needs to be). The fact that more parts are metal instead of plastic, should also help with heat retention. Although I haven't used it, the picopresso looks far superior. Tbh, I haven't been able to dial in my coffee to something that I'm truly satisfied with in the nanopresso. It's okay, but considering that I usually like to have my espresso with some milk, I have found that the flavor profile I get is not really the best for that. So, if you're deciding between the two, I'd definitely go for the picopresso. I'm debating if it's worth the upgrade, considering I already have the nano, or if I should just mess with it a bit more and try to dial in my coffee to something I'm more satisfied with.

      Hi Lars, welcome back ! There are portable hand grinders out there that will comfortably grind for espresso - some even compete with High end commercial grinders for quality output. These grinders are great for travel.. some weighing over 500g , there's others that are lighter.. so I would suggest so long as you can get to some boiling water ... than carrying ~1kg of coffee brewing equipment around for a great espresso could be more convenient than other options

    Upon further experimentation, I tried using beans in a hand grinder, a Hario slim coffee grinder purchased from you guys. I tried grinding on the finest setting which takes forever on this grinder and I am not able to get any creama. The puck had a big crater in it after I took it out, coffee very bitter. I tamped accordingly. Do I need to grind finer further still? Is this grinder sufficient enough? Feels like my unit isn't building up enough pressure even when the grind is fine.

    • @YSdestoyer
      @YSdestoyer Před 2 lety +1

      update: I retried by firstly grinding the beans coarse, then redialing the Hario to almost as fine as it could go, put the coarse grounds back through a second time, and I was able to achieve a crema, although this came out beyond 8 pumps and was quite hard to pump, also coffee grinds in the last sip of coffee, coffee again was a bit bitter, but much better than last time. Now I think the issue is the grinder, it's much too tiresome and complicating things by sitting there for 10 minutes+ trying to get ground coffee. Maybe a better grinder would do? What sort of grinder would you recommend. Preferably 150-250 AUD range

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  Před 3 lety +3

      On par with the Flair when you get all the parameters on points - this will include the steady consistent pressure. Flair have this advantage of the pressure gauge - and whilst the Picopresso is still a guess what pressure your brewing at - you get feedback in the pump and you can watch the flow of the espresso - Wacaco will bring out the Pressure gauge for the Picopresso in the next few months - and this will really heat up the competition between these two portable espresso maker ... although the Picopresso imho already wins on portability ... I think it can be slightly better with that pressure gauge

I had the nanopresso and the shot that i get isnt really espresso and i am looking for a replacement and the picopresso is on the top of the list as i am a huge fan of wacaco. • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  Před 3 lety +5

      Correct - It's guess work at the moment. And even with the Pressure Gauge - it'll take some practice to maintain a steady pressure - as with pumping, you do get pattern of build up and release of pressure - as opposed to the Flair where it's a constant pressure down from leaning on the lever...
      Whenever I've pumped too hard on the Picopresso, channelling and sprites occur from the bottom of the basket... and this is consistent with high pressure espresso brewing in the Flair and all espresso machines ... over 10 bars and it's very common.. so I try not to pump the picopresso until it gets too hard to pump - but keep it on that threshold of resistance but not hard to press... So in that way I guess it's feeling and reacting to the feedback that the Picopresso is providing... much like a lever machine ha!
      The espresso from the Picopresso eclipses that of the Nanopresso 👍

If it is coming out around that number of pumps - and you're maintaining a steady pump cycle - then perhaps it may be the freshness of the coffee that you are using. possibly - but in my experience the two factor to getting no crema - are 1) and the biggest reason - using coffee that is not freshly roasted. Must be within 14 days of being roasted for ideal conditions to create crema. 2) Grind size - which will actually create the pressure. Without a fine enough grind - there is no resistance to hold back the water - and it will flow through fast - so you require a fine grind to get a good espresso with crema. Hope this helps 👌

      the most likly reason is that the coffee being used is either not ideal for espresso - or has past it's ideal window for great cream. See crema is not a definitive things when brewing espresso - and is only present during brewing so long as a few things conditions are met. Such as high temperatures and pressures - along with a good amount of trapped gas in the beans during brewing. The gas is formed during roasting - and dissipates overtime. Usually within 10-20 days post roast. And if pre-ground that shortnes it to 2-3 days. Outside this window of two-three weeks, the coffee is less and less likely to create crema.

    In fact, I have used this machine and it is very difficult to operate. Not recommended for the normal consumer, unless you have a decent grinder you will be disappointed. If you can't control the thickness of the powder well, either you can't press it, or you can't form the pressure to extract the coffee crema.I don't deny that he can make good coffee, but the technical requirements for the operator are very high. Have time and patience at home to try

    I do not see a portability using Picopresso. First you need a boiling water, it does not have to be a tea kettle but you need some kind of pot. Then you need a grinder to grind the coffee at the correct grind, I guess you need electricity for the grinder. An option would be to grind the coffee at home and keep it in rubber sealed jar. To get the best result it will be necessary to have a scale to measure exact amount of coffee. Where is the portability? This (and similar products) is a gadget, a toy.

      I understand your skepticism about the portability of brewing with it.. I believe if someone were to really want to travel and pack light than instant coffee would probably be the best option - that's always going to be the best option.. but what the next best option? And in particular, the best option for brewing a truly delicious espresso whilst outdoors or travelling away from home - with the factors of brewing your own coffee over visiting a cafe, and unable to take a POD or Espresso Machine with you? Heating water up is quite easy over a fire when camping ... and in most hotels there's a Kettle for boiling water.. Hand Grinders are becoming more and more espresso grind capable, but a bag of ground coffee for two or three days away isn't sacrilege. Scales ... no you don't need scales.. fill the basket up with coffee, fill the water up to the top and brew.. you can brew it to an exact recipe or just cowboy it and the results will still be decent espresso from something that fits in the palm of your hand and weight 350g.

    Another coffeejack lol if I need to bring a kettle or hot water it's not portable and if I'm using a kettle I'd rather just use my espresso machine in the kitchen

      I agree, however, with my Nanopresso, I'd take it to work where I'd already have coffee at my desk and I'd use the hot water from someone else's Keurig machine. It's just preference and convenience I guess.
