Clifton Mill | Slideshow | Season 24, Episode 4 (8/11/2024)

Situated near Clifton, Ohio, Clifton Mill is among the most historic and attractive grist mills in the country. On the banks of the Little Miami River, Revolutionary War soldier Owen Davis constructed Clifton Mill in 1802. The strong flow of the river made the place ideal for a mill since it supplied the energy needed to turn the millstones. Clifton Mill was an important part of the local economy in the early 19th century, serving as a community hub and a location to grind grain for nearby farmers. Conceived around the same period, the mill played a crucial role in the establishment of the village of Clifton.
The mill is among the oldest continuously running grist mills in the nation, having been in operation for more than 200 years. The original waterwheel was replaced with a turbine as part of the technological upgrades made to the mill over time. Due to these upgrades, the mill was able to meet the community's evolving needs by increasing productivity and efficiency. The mill encountered difficulties in the late 20th century as a result of the decrease in the usage of grist mills. Nonetheless, because of its cultural and historical value, Clifton Mill was preserved as a historic landmark.
Today, Clifton Mill is a well-liked tourist destination, drawing crowds from all around the area with its yearly Christmas light display and picturesque surroundings. The mill continues the tradition of grinding flour and cornmeal, which are sold in its gift shop. Although Clifton Mill is no longer the community's main mill, it nevertheless serves as a living museum that highlights Ohio's early industrial history and the history of milling. Visitors can take a tour of the mill, watch the original equipment in operation, and discover how the milling process works.
