  • Check out my review of the new Netflix documentary, The Greatest Night in Pop!
On January 25, 1985, dozens of the biggest names in music convened at a studio in Los Angeles, checked their egos at the door and recorded a song to benefit African famine relief that would alter global pop culture history. The Greatest Night in Pop chronicles the massive undertaking to assemble the world’s most impressive supergroup in a world before cell phones and email.
That group of artists - led by the song’s co-writers and two of the most significant musicians of the 20th century - Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie - came from different worlds but united to record “We Are the World.” Featuring never-before-seen footage, the film details the early planning stages, including the writing sessions with Richie and Jackson, and goes inside the famed Henson Studios where “We Are the World” was recorded.
Many of the artists who were there that legendary evening -- Richie, Bruce Springsteen, Smokey Robinson, Cyndi Lauper, Kenny Loggins, Dionne Warwick, and Huey Lewis -- reminisce alongside musicians, engineers,
and production crew about one of the most storied nights in music history.
The Greatest Night in Pop was directed by Bao Nguyen and produced by Julia Nottingham, the team behind the acclaimed Bruce Lee documentary (Be Water).

Tait, the amount of screaming, hollering & talking back in agreement I did to you with this video!!! You were sooooooo on point with your review & research!!! Like you, I was so upset that there was gonna be a WATW remake & then was offended by the result! I couldn't believe what they did to it & that Lionel was actually cool with it! Wyclef's part made me wanna "Homey The Clown" his ass for the way he sang!!! Long time subscriber here brother, this was one of your best! Btw: am I the only one who watches your videos & makes the "swoosh" noise when you swing your head back to the camera after asking us to hit the notification button? Also, I can't be the only sub of yours that actually says "alright... plot time" with the hand gesture in real life when telling stories to people!!! Lol love your shit brother! ✊🏼I also gave this docu 2 thumbs up on Netflix, amazing. I'll never forget that night. That was also one of THE BEST AMAs ever! Shelia E. & those glow in the dark drumsticks!

So glad to see you did a review on this. I'm a 53-year-old black woman and when I tell you I still ride around with CDs I made with the greatest hits of Kenny Loggins, Huey Lewis and the News, Journey, Hall and Oates, etc. man in that era MTV was not playing Black people until Prince and Whitney and Michael broke the barrier so those pop or rock or whatever you want to call them vocalists that had real pipes were heavy in rotation in our community. One thing that I did learn watching that documentary was that Cyndi Lauper can sing. I never bought her album, I only heard her songs on the radio I did not realize she had pipes like that! The second thing that that documentary did was make me sad all over again about losing MJ because I was a kid when he was Michael Jackson & the Jackson 5 then I was there when he went out on his own as a kid singer before he blew up with the Off the Wall album. Seeing him waiting for everyone to arrive, by himself going over the vocals it just had me in my spririt, I cried.
That was a wonderful time to be alive and my biggest memory about We are The world is I was talking about it so much & so excited about it that I came home from school one day and my dad had the cassette for me. But it didn't look right, it didn't look like it came from the store so I asked him where he got it. Now remember this was the 80s, the era of crack-a-nomics. My Daddy told me he bought it from somebody ar basketball court 😒 I just burst out crying and said what about the hungry kids in Africa! 😂🤣

Bob Dylan is a dang great song WRITER... but as A SINGER...especially, when you put him in the midst of all those mega black singer super stars...Bob knew his limitations. He's humble enough to admit he's not really a vocalist.
i truly appreciate that whole Bob moment...him, BOB friggin' DYLAN feeling rather out of place and even insecure around Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Diana Ross, Billy Joel, The Boss..Steve Perry..Cyndi Lauper...ALL ace vocalists.

The coordination and planning is something our government could definitely use. The unity of different artist despite different races was good to see that there was no racism. Michael Jackson’s version is my favorite and I know he had something in mind and the African part he incorporated was actually good, it wasn’t over the top like Stevie Wonders swahili part. Overall great film, and it was good to see artist come together in unity.

@@TaitsTake Oh my goodness, I can not thank you enough for the review!!! From the beginning seeing Harry Belfonte in Kraken's office and getting the ball rolling to the end...pure emotion. The Lord puts you were you need to be, just think had Stevie Wonder answered Lionel Ritchie's call we may have never had this song. He and Michael chilling and hanging out thinking they had time until Quincy showed up and said , " I need the song, we're on awards night". Then they deliver, he loves it. They lay the track and send it out to all the artists. Bruce Springsteen, who never flys after a tour, flew out of a snow storm in Buffalo. Dionne who said she was going to be in Vegas, flew in. Seeing my beloved Kenny Roger's drive himself to the studio...joy.
I cried listening to Michael singing alone while everyone was at the awards, deferring to Quincy, "do I say you & I or you & me? " I cried when Ray Charles played it as a gospel song. Watching the Motown crowd sitting on the risers ..Bob Dylan saying ,"Stevie, play it for me?" And Stevie playing it and mimicking Bob's voice just to help him find his comfort...it was beautiful. Dionne, Willie (f' ing) Nelson and AL Jureau , Darryl, Steve & Kenny Loggins ....genius trios.
I laughed when Waylon Jenning walked out, a true "good Ole boy". Smoky asking what did ching a Ling mean? And he and Ray cracking up at MJ. The best Ray says he has to to the bathroom and Stevie says "I'll show you" , them hand on arm, and someone says, " truly the blind leading the blind" I can hear the legends laughing.
I cried again when they said Diana Ross cried and said she didn't want that night to end. Remembering the day and time it premiered and as the say music can heal, we really felt as one. Enjoy coming home because there will come a time when you can't go home. The house will be there but the people won't. And then reading the names of everyone no longer here.
Bob Geldorf, I thank you for inspired words and actions.
So,so good. Perfection, any more voices or any less and it would have been a totally different gift to the world. As much as I love Prince, I understand that he spoke mostly with his guitar and crowds were not in thing. Rest in power. 💐💐🌷🌷💐💐

Hi Chris, As always, fine job....Sorry you missed...80's...Journey = Steve Perry... Loggins & Messina = Kenny loggins and Hall & Oates = Daryl Hall. What about Huey Lewis? I saw a review of the Doc over weekend. Reviewer mentioned that Huey Lewis sang Pince's part... I have not watched it yet...But that may very well something that came of the documentary. I enjoy and appreciate your work...

New subbie! I liked the documentary. Honestly I don't think the Haiti relief version was that bad. (ducks from tomatoes)😂 At least Celine Dion's version trumps (🙄) Cyndi Lauper's. 😂 And how Lil Wayne was worse than Dylan?😂 Interestingly enough, they scrapped the Swahili bit but had Haitian Creole for the Haiti relief version.

There were wrong for using Shelia E to get Prince. DEAD wrong. I honestly don't think Prince would've been a good fit anyway because of his ego. They would've never got anything done. They were struggling a bit with who they had already. Also, it shouldn't have been an exact remake, but they should've actually wrote a who new song. smh

Just watched it lastnight. It was phenomenal how we as the audience were able to be flies on the walls throughout the creative process. I learned so much new details and information that although familiar with the song itself, it became new again. The Haiti version was so Absolutely Atrocious that I've never actually heard the entire song. It came across as extremely Lazy and lacking any actual talent from the production to the artists. The Haiti version was an Abomination and outright Embarrassing. Definitely recommend watching this doc though and completely skip the Autotuned Offkey Haiti version completely.
