- Take a look at this time-lapse video featuring the anchor installation on the starboard side of USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) during the aircraft carrier’s refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipbuilding. This weeklong evolution occurred in July 2023 and was a joint effort between NNS and the U.S. Navy. The anchor chain consists of 12 shots of chain, containing 57 links per shot - each shot of chain weighs over 20,000 pounds! The combined weight of all the shots and additional material installed for one fully-intact anchor chain is nearly 258,000 pounds, which does not include the ship’s anchor, which weighs just over 66,000 pounds.
These videos always grab my attention.
Very cool. Thank you.
Absolutely incredible!
Can you imagine what the founding fathers, or John Paul Jones (father of the navy), would say if they saw these magnificent feats of engineering and American power. From nothing but neglected colonies without a navy to THE superpower of the world.
Must be close to completing her midlife overhaul
Watch your foot!
Thought it was gonna be David Bowie Fame for the first couple seconds

How long is one shot of chain
They scratched the paint when they pulled the anchor up tight. Better repaint.
