Our rural life as a young family | Abandoned garden renovation

- The garden was one of the main reasons why we moved our family life to this area of rural France.
We‘ve spent a lot of time tending to it over the last three years. It was very overgrown when we arrived so the first 12-18 months were really just clearing. Since then we have discovered old plants that were hidden and planted many new ones. It’s really starting to come together.

Welcome to Living in the Loire, we are a family in rural France, renovating previously poorly converted barns.
We aim to do most of the work ourselves, being as frugal and as eco as possible. We are learning on the job and we hope to share the skills we pick up along the way.
When possible we will take you on a tour of the region (the garden of France) sharing with you the numerous chateaux, towns and markets.
As well as the house we will be transforming the garden, bringing part of it back to its previous use as a potager. This is our dream and one of the main reasons of leaving the city to move to the countryside in France.
Join us on our journey!
This is what is called "being alive in your own life". What a great example to show your subscribers and your children. Keep on.
Thank you so much!
Bravo pour tout ce travail accompli encore et encore ! Le résultat est là !
May be one of the best videos I have seen, your voice describing the progress and the changes are outstanding. Congratulations, your hard work is paying off and your life seems joyous. Best Wishes.
Thank you very much for your kind words Sandra.
Will you consider a mulberry tree?
What a difference 3 years of hard work makes!
The dream world developed year by year! You have given me so much comfort, inspiration and hope. Love you❤
Thank you so much ☺️
You two have done so much since you moved in. The progress is amazing and looks beautiful. Well done!! The gardens and flowers are wonderful too!
Thanks so much Jane. As you're going along it can be hard to really take stock of what you have done. So a video like this does make us appreciate what we have achieved.
Rainpoint is brilliant! I don't have a garden at the moment, and when I did it was too small to irrigate, so I just watered it by hand. I can't wait to use this in my new garden! Thank you so much for sharing this, and your awesome garden journey!!
Stunningly beautiful video!!!🫛🌶🌻
Thanks Donna
Wonderful, beautiful and peaceful.
Perfect for your growing little family, such a joy to watch, thank you 🙏
Lots of hard work has paid off because your garden is wonderful.

Thank you for sharing your journey!
You have done so much in these last 3 years.
Much Love
Thanks Julie
Wonderful video, beautful spot for the Irises.
Thanks guys!!! Watching all your effort in perspective......Incredible....
Absolutely lovely! Your hard work is truly paying off.
You guys have worked so hard. What a transformation! Can't wait for next years update.
I know we're sporadic but hopefully we should manage another video before next year 😂. No, I can't wait to see how it all develops over the years too. Gardens often take decades to fully evolve and develop so it's exciting to see how it will shape up.
your garden is beautiful and very fruitful too.
Thank you so much for sharing. You are bringing back and creating a new beautiful relaxing home atmosphere.
Thank you Stanley
Queen Anne’s Lace!!! We can’t grow it at our altitude 😢. Western Colorado. We can although grow Alium Gigantor! Keep the deer away. Your gardens are fantastic!
The irises were beautiful!
Beautiful, you have worked so hard and are reaping the rewards
Thanks Susane
Lovely video Rebecca, Brook and Kids; I just wanted to leave this note to try and express how much your videos mean to me all the way from Melbourne, Australia. Your videos ooze a feeling of nurture, calm and kindness in a world which is hard to find solace at times. Thank you for your videos, I also love learning tips and tricks from your garden and property restorations/renovations. Keep up the awesome work 😊
Thanks so much Caitlin for that lovely comment.
Love the life you are creating for your family. Enjoy the fruits (and veggies) of your labors. So much beauty in your corner of the world.
That’s a sunflower heaven! My favourite flower🌻
We're surrounded by fields of them as well. It's wonderful.
I really enjoyed your vlog watching you and your family grow amazing I will keep watching your progress.😊

Hello Liesbeth 👋
Well done...you seem to have really green fingers.
I would love to see what you have done inside the house sometime.
Just a beautiful video!

Them black berries are huge. They look so yummy. The sunflower garden is beautiful. Very nice work in all you’ve done.
Well done, a lot of work and careful planning. It's great that you are continuing with youtoube🇦🇺

It was so gorgeous!
Love to see you happy guy's......from India
Beautiful video again, such hard work but sooo rewarding tor you all.
Brilliant
DreamTeam!
Bravo, mes amis! The transition from then to now is truly amazing. You’ve all worked so hard and it shows. My back and knees hurt just watching it all unfold. Sometimes it’s very rewarding to look back on your journey as a family and remember how far you’ve come. Top rate filming, too, Brook! Simply beautiful. I’m sending hugs to all, including the boys. 😘
Thank you Libby!
And, I might add, all “this” is in addition to your lives together and as parents! Parenting is one of the most challenging of all, I found. Everyone seems healthy and happy now though. 😊
Look how far you have come, well done! As usual a lovely relaxing vlog.
Beautiful !! Thank-you.
Your garden is gorgeous! Very impressive.
Hi Brook, hi Rebecca, 3 years has seen a lot of changes hasn't it? I remember when you first planted those big beds, and all the work that went into preparing them. Look what you've achieved! It's all looking so lush and productive. I would love to sink my teeth into some of that fruit, and oh those giant zuccinis! Slabbed up and crumbed, fried in butter, salt and pepper - bliss! Hope you're all fit and well? Much love and big hugs xxx
That's a great idea for cooking them! We've got a freezer full of fruit already! A friend gave us a dehydrator so I think we might try dehydrating a couple of greengages to see how they turn out. All fit and well at the moment 👍
Love from sweden❤
Thanks Mike
Wow! Well done 👍🏻 love your videos 😊
Enchanting to watch , I know lots of work to create such a tranquil space
Thank you. Yes, hopefully one day we can get to a stage where we can just enjoy the tranquility.
I love the way you have planted flowers as well as vegetables. Veggies feed the body, but flowers feed the soul! Your garden is simply beautiful!
Absolutely! Have loved having more flowers. As have the insects which feed from them!
So inspirational, keep up the good work.😊
You should give the irises a good haircut after you plant them, for 2 reasons: the wind will have less purchase on them. and their energy will go to making roots rather than keeping the leaves alive. Master Gardener from Georgia, born in Angers long ago!!!
WoW it all looks so beautiful !! 🙏💕🌷
شاء الله 😊 رائع و جميل 😃
احببت عملكم و النتيجة المبهرة التي وصلتم إليها !
لديكم عزيمة و إرادة قوية ! 😊
I really loved your work !
Good luck for more happiness, may Allah save your health and make you live so long with your children in your paradise😊
Thank you for sharing this beautifull experiance with us❤

Hallo from Bavaria, just looked into your videos today👍. Very prof filming and editing, very soothing. Left an abo and will follow your way. I always loved France, had close friends in Paris, Normandy and Bretagne. Hélas they passed away as they where much older than we are, now as well retired and in our 70th.
I'm a new subscriber. This overview is nice to help me catch up. Really enjoying your channel. PS - I have a good recipe for those over-sized courgettes: Remove woody seeds, shred them coarsely with a food processor. (Small courgettes can't be shredded as they are too soft.) For each 1 cup (250 ml), add: 1 egg, about 2 ml salt, 15 ml chopped onion, at least 50 ml grated Parmesan, and 60 ml dried potato flakes. Add herbs such as basil and garlic to taste. The batter should be thick enough for a spoonful to make a nice blob when you drop it into a pan. Pan-fry spoonfuls of the batter till they hold together like a potato cake. This is a family favorite. We store shredded zucchini in the freezer for a winter treat. Apparently potato flakes are not a "thing" in Europe. One could use bread crumbs in a similar ratio, or maybe mashed potato.
Thanks Lisa, love the recipe. I was about to say I'd never heard of potato flakes. Breadcrumbs seems like a good replacement so will give it a go 😊
Amazing family with such a will power!
Trying leaving as you but is tough:/
Wish to meet you one day.
If you are in Normandie let us know!
Lots of love
Jo
Thanks Jo. Yes it's definitely not always easy. Have you always been in Normandie?
Wow, you both got so much done in 3 years . Well done . I love to see how the land and building are coming along and how much they have changed. 😊.
Really wish you and your beautiful family the best , the very best .
One of my sun flowers is 9 foot tall 😅. I find with iris they just flower for a week and then gone. So I got early spring ones and summer ones they had flowered and gone before I knew it. They are a beautiful plant, just wish they would flower for longer. Same with llilies the effort to grow them for them to flower once and not for long then 😮 if a wind gets them head blown off.😂.
You win the sunflower competition 😂. In general I'm really bad at cutting flowers for the house as I love having them in the garden. However this year I did cut a big bunch of irises as it was so windy when they were flowering I thought they wouldn't last two minutes outside.
Great video again thank you for sharing
Thanks Paul
Lovely garden. Not too fussy, easy to live in and enjoy. Thanks for sharing and good luck getting a hammock for 4! 😄
Oh no, it's a hammock for one and I'm hiding in it 😂
IVe recently learned that Lavender is a huge cash crop in the US. , many varieties. Maybe look into growing where you are?
such a difference guys and i've been watching since you started. great work restoring such a beautiful property. stay strong.
Thank you Marisa
Amazing progress, you are an amazing team.
We are busy decorating the house and hopefully finished for Christmas and get house on the market for spring…
Then hopefully be in France for summer 2024
Thanks Pete. Good luck with the decorating!
The grounds are coming on beautifully! The black wall, the postage... everything, looking wonderful, you both must feel so proud! 😊Looking forward to seeing how you're doing on the inside ! Thank you both
It's coming together. It's good to focus on what we have done as it's easy to just see what still needs to be done.
Great work. You can also use your myscanthus as a perfect mulch at the end of winter.
👍
It’s an amazing transformation in only three years, well done
Inspiring 😀👍
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Your children certainly love berries!
You both seem to know what to plant where! A great gardener in your family or a former neighbor!
Such a beautiful mix of gardens and I love the black painted wall great idea as it is a fantastic backdrop for the plants. Your little boys are such a delight and how lucky are they sampling all the produce. Hard work and well done.
Thank you Valerie
Huge improvement! Can’t wait to see the barn finished
Me neither 😂
What a lovely video. Three years, amazing what the two of you have done with the property inside and out. Congrats!
Love the hammock idea❤️ your hard work has paid off. Can’t wait to see the harvest next year!
Thanks @maaia! Big year next year. Only just getting started. 💪🌱
Everything looks so beautiful. You guys deserve this place.!!❤
Thank you for sharing your glorious, beautiful garden with us. Yes, they are alot of work but you are reaping the benefits year round.
How is your french going? And the shop in the village? Cheers sue Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺
Hi Sue, French is getting there slowly. The shop is going well thanks although general consensus seems to be there are less tourists than last year. Hopefully August will be a good month!
Wow, you are such an inspiration! Love watching your amazing development over the last three years!😍
😎😎
You live on Eden.... 🙂
Is so beautiful! what a great job you’re doing!! very inspirational 😊
😍
Did I see you have planted chillies outside? Just wondering if I can do that. I am in dept 86.
Lovely videos, you two are so fabulous. Love watching your journey.
Definitely! They won't last the winter outside. You can try pitting them up in the autumn and bringing them inside and then planting out again next summer. Or just treat them as annuals.
🌟👏👍🍀💐

Must be hard to speak French and use the metric system!
We're under 50 so the metric system is our norm. Speaking French is rather trickier!
loved this video showing the culmination of all your hard work and love. amazing transformation, wishing you all health and happiness xxx
Thank you Frankie
Thanks!
Thanks John!
