      CLWXRF she could have been very successful. She had already sung bg vocals for Aretha, Elvis , and others. As well as leading the gospel Drinkard Singers years ago. She stated that she never wanted to pursue singing as a destiny because she knew what the business was.. She loved singing for God but the secular was just to bring income to her family

    • @vanessiesmith3230
      @vanessiesmith3230 Před 9 lety +32

      Actually Cissy was big time on the gospel circuit and refused to sing pop music for years. So she was successful in that she sang what she wanted to sing...praises to the Lord, only in later years she found out she could do both. Back in the day a singer did one or the other. But Elvis Presley, Aretha, Johnny Cash, Sam Cook started the trend that it was okay to sing both.

    A definitive version that only soulful singers like Cissy Houston can deliver. Her soaring vocals and genius phrasing captivates the soul of this pop song turned R&B. The band is outstanding especially the horns.

    Oh wow I read mrs cissy book and now listening to her music I never realized how much whitney did sing like her mom. She said in her book that she stole her riffs in a song she sure did. Very talented family.

    Ms Cissy!!! Wow! I'm 30 years old by the time I knew of a "Cissy Houston" was "Whitney Houston's mother" and Whitney had already been a superstar for 15 years! Sooo, while I aware she was singer I only had heard her sing as an older woman in her 60's and 70's. Hearing her voice as a young woman here, it is SO clear that Whitney was heavily influenced by her mother (and straight up stole some of her inflections lol!!!). I really understand now why she (Cissy) is so revered as a vocalist and had such success. With Whitney... her voice was annointed. With that sad, the apple did not fall far from the tree!

    Cissy passed on the mixture of gospel and opera. Whitney learned to sing the light, sweet ethereal and angelic. Cissy's singing Blues. Whitney sang Pop. Not that Pop's better than the Blues; it's simply more lucrative. Kudos to Mom's good Biz sense. [YES- I attribute this to Cissy and stand by this assessment, PERIOD]

      After reading your comment, I was going to quickly disagree. But, I must admit, I hears a few glimpses of Whitney in her tone and phrasing...for the first time ever. And, I've been a rabid Whitney fan for decades.

      GospelAccording2ME If you listen to Felicia Moss Eaton-Ms.Cissy's niece and Whitney's first cousin you can hear both Whitney and Ms. Cissy's voice. This is a talented family.
