  • The problem of antibiotic resistance is becoming an increasing worry as new, antibiotic-resistant superbugs (like MRSA and E.coli) can cause infections including pneumonia, urinary tract infections and bloodstream infections. They are difficult to treat as the cell wall of the bacteria prevents drugs from getting into the microbe. But how can we solve antibiotic resistance and overcome the antibiotic resistance crisis?
Working with the Science and Technology Facilities Council, Professor Jim Thomas and PhD student Kirsty Smitten have designed a new compound which visualises and kills antibiotic-resistant gram-negative bacteria, including pathogenic E. coli.
