Just got this camera and I’d say even in 2024, this camera is still a powerhouse that’ll hang with cameras much more in price. Pretty incredible actually how much lumix charges for this camera and the features it comes with, honestly should be much more expensive. That L.monochrome setting is fantastic looking, as well! I’ve had everything from Pentax to Leica to everything in between, this camera definitely catches my attention!

My man, so glad you're stoked on the camera. That's a good point you brought out about it not being the most "efficient" 1st or only camera, it really is a complimentary camera to grab that extra angle or a fun photo and b-roll cam since it lacks some very useful tools (mostly just the mic jack). So hyped on the love with the shoutout, keep up the awesome work!

I absolutely love my GX80. I use it just for hobby filming and hobby photography and I never thought that this camera is such a little beast in terms of Video quality. I love the 4K options but also 1080p 60 looks amazing. The IBIS is doing a great job. Just the Video AF is not very reliable. But it is what it is, no Camera is perfect. I record Audio external with a Olympus LS-P1 Audio Recorder and mix it up in post. It needs a little bit more work, but the sound quality is great. I think, this camera has a lot of potential and is a great starting point to learn how to utilize the MFT eco system in a creative way. And I really learnd a lot since I switched from APSC to MFT. - Thank you for this great video Nigel!

  • @newfoundmass
    @newfoundmass Před 3 lety +2

My 3 camera set up is the GH5, the G85, and the GX85; the lack of a mic jack isn't a problem since I just use the audio from the other two for my multicam work. What I REALLY love about the GX85, and what I think is the ultimate promise of the M43 system, is that I can take it into a concert or sporting event and with the 35-100mm f2.8 get incredible, professional looking video in situations where "professional cameras" are banned. They don't give my tiny camera with a lens the size of a soda can a second look. You couldn't do that with a full frame camera with a 70-200mm lens.
For multicam work I love how small it is. I can put it on a Manfrotto super clamp on a balcony edge or railing and not have to worry about it. It has opened up so many different camera angles for my work because of how compact it is.
    I definitely can recommend it!

I have owned 2 of these gems separately in the past. I’m one of these ppl who will buy and sell multiple cameras to use, try out and sell again for something else. But, I might have to get this again and compare to what I currently own to see which wins out. Some of my favourite photos were taken with this and the Oly 17mm f1.8. I currently own a Fuji x-e2 and an Oly e-m10iii. The Oly has a better viewfinder, but for some reason I can’t get the touch focus to work whilst looking through the viewfinder. I’ve checked menus and it all seems to be enabled to do this, so it might just be faulty (or I’m mistaken and it just can’t do this), but I had no problem doing this with a gx80 and it’s such a neat feature. For less than £300 secondhand these are a steal and an easy one to recommend.

Had one, so much good moments with it. Best value hybrid camera, bar none.
Got a GX9 because it was in a good package with the Panasonic 12-60, that I wanted; the plan was to sold the body, keep the lens but...sold the GX85 and kept the GX9, liked it so much.
Cons against the GX9 (and could be a big one): in 4k, it crops even more than the GX85, and yeah, it is noticeable. If you intend to shoot a lot of wide angle video, it could be a serious problem.
Better (for me) in the GX9: the return of the tiltable EVF (incredible for tripod work, for use it pointing the camera upwards using the EVF, and to grab the camera like a TLR against your body), the return of the focus mode switch (I switch a lot between AF and MF when shooting concerts), color science (looks like the same color science of the G9, it is VERY good, almost Fuji/Olympus levels), AF is better (even in video sometimes, much better than the GX85, Eye AF much better than the GX85).
    Can't go wrong with both.

in 2024 the GX85 is still selling for about $400. I decided to get it for my first MFT camera. I have a Nikon DSLR and a small passel of Nikon lenses and decided that I was going to switch to MFT. I'm primarily a photo shooter but my goal is to get into more video. I had initially planned on the GH5, but then the GH6 came out and I really want that. I decided to get the GX85 first because lots of people say it is really good, and it is much less than the GH6. I'm still waiting for it to arrive in the mail, but I a couple MFT lenses and an adapter for my Nikon lenses. I'm hoping to get some time in with the GX85 and build up a better collection of MFT lenses to be able to justify spending on the GH6 eventually.

I think the GX85 may have a slight edge as a hybrid camera. Since it has IBIS for video and doesn't overheat. Both are great cameras still!

I'm into photography not so much video and this is the only camera I use really. It was in my price range and most cameras aren't as I have a limited budget. it does everything I want .

Gx85 is amazing I had it once and returned it and missed it every since. You can buy the mirror reflector to help with filming yourself. I went for for the gx9 however I prefer the gx85. There is just something about the camera. I've also noticed on the USA model it's unlimited recording. I'm excited to see what's in the new Panasonic firmware. If the gx9 does not get the update I'm picking up the gx85 again.

What do you prefer about the GX85 than the GX9? Just curious, thought the the GX9 is better overall package. well maybe one I can think of is lesser crop in 4k.

@@Jaymino_ I liked the Dial's better on the gx9 however of you do not currently have any m43 lenses the 12-60 that comes with the gx9 is a awesome lens

@@sdhute Hey Steve, from your initial comment, I thought you meant the GX85 was better. Anyways, it's so close between the two, you won't go wrong with either one. I currently pair the 20mm with GX85- lightweight setup for photos on the go!

Dude this whole time never made the association that Barros was Portuguese, considering how often I make that assumption based on last names I'm really surprised I missed it.

I sold mine and kind of regret it. It is an amazing camera. I moved to Fuji but will definitely re-buy this camera or get the GX9 1 day. I miss the small form factor and great quality. I have an X-H1 now and it's huge compared to this tiny beast.

Hi Nigel could you check out the Panasonic Gx8? I’d love to hear your opinion on it

Actually, I got the GX80/85 from ebay but it turned out, it's too similar sizewise to it's larger brother G85, which is my main camera :-) So I sold it and got the GX800/GF9 instead....which is EVEN SMALLER! So now my G85 is my main camera and the GX800 is the "take anywhere" cam...especially with the 14mm, 20mm prime lenses....it's TINY! (It doesn't have a viewfinder or IBIS though....)

I could imagine how great this camera is. I own a Panasonic Lumix G85 is more a video oriented than this one but has the same quality and I love it.

How do you manage to get perfect focus with the 15mm f1.7 while filming video? Can you make a tutorial for that, please?🙏🙏🙏

Too heavy. Some ppl think they added ballast, but it's just a first gen ibis unit. I have one, not my favorite, but technically excellent I can't deny. Takes all the tech from Lumix of the day
