  • Note June 2021: I have had several enquiries about making these guitars for export from the UK. At the present time, full insurance for export of musical instruments seems to be unavailable. Therefore I cannot make this particular guitar for export at the moment. When international travel resumes normality at the end of the pandemic, I expect to be able to return to export on request, subject to insurance.
    A Historic Series guitar - a copy made for a customer of the John Birch guitar of the mid 1970's which was designed for Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath.

    *I’m always happy when I can find somebody else who loves to play Black Sabbath so I subscribe to your channel. 🎥🎙🎵🎶 Although I haven’t got the Tony Iommi signature SG, I do want to Gibson SG just for the fact that’s why Tony Iommi played as well as the way it feels when you play it.*

    i always found iommi guitar mashups fascinating... his original john birch had a leo quan, if i'm not mistaken, and his pickups were heavily overwound, like, 22 - 24k if i remember correctly... what you have there is a treasure, right next to the old boy, which is in my eyes second only to the monkey... funnily enough, i got myself a 2012 gibson sg special which i equipped with a schaller 455 and john birch simplux/superflux mk2 pickups and i can confidently say you blew it out completely! congrats man, cherish it, thats a good guitar right there

      Hi Luka. Many thanks. I think you're right about the Leo Quan bridge - the pickups are Magnaflux/Hyperflux and are ceramic and incredibly hot. The customer who asked me to build this supplied the 455 bridge as his preference after having me install a Quan on an epiphone he converted to a 'monkey' with some pickups (very much as you did). We're now about to build him another kinda 'Mashup' which is a 'Monkey' style SG but with 24 Frets and a 455 + Sperzels in brushed chrome.
      I have another customer who wants a sort of Birch style in Left Handed - but with a few tweaks for his own playing style - He's got an archive of information about the original Birch which I haven't yet seen but will probably show up a number of differences between the original and the one I built.

      @@TonyEdwardsGuitars you know, i'm genuinely happy for you and for your abundance of opportunities. where i live, import taxes and postage fees are really high so i rarely order anything outside the EU, and that fact completely crippled my plans for another sg i had in mind... i couldn't order a 456 schaller from the US, i couldn't get a set of sperzels, i can hardly find a set of jaydee or john birch pickups anymore, let alone with all additional costs. and worst of all i wanted to dabble in the luthier bussiness since guitars are my passion, and i can only hope to learn more from the likes of you or twoodford or stewmac. once again, much luck on your projects and i genuinely hope you can make as many iommi guitars as possible, keep our community alive, and i hope i can join you one day! much love!

    Beautiful guitar! Great sounding as well.....I have a John Birch guitar built around 1973. Body and 2 octave neck constructed from one piece of maple with a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. Hyperflux pickups sound great on it. I contacted John Diggins a few years ago and he confirmed the year he made it as well as the woods used. I think Mr. Diggins is retired now but his son still runs Jaydee guitars?

    • @TonyEdwardsGuitars
      @TonyEdwardsGuitars  Před 2 lety

      Cheers. I honestly don't know much about JayDee, but they're clearly still out there and making guitars. I'm told they now have acquired the Birch intellectual property, so I probably won't ever make one of these particular guitars again if they seek to return to them as company.

    • @TonyEdwardsGuitars
      @TonyEdwardsGuitars  Před 2 lety +4

      It's a while back now, but I think it was a Hyperflux and a Magnaflux. The bridge pickup was insanely hot and drove my normal boogie IV tone into incredible amounts of overdrive.

      @@jjrrbb I think the issue is that John Birch is retired, and has passed all his intellectual property to another party (possibly JayDee). But don't quote me on that, it's something I vaguely remember being told by a customer.

      Hi Harry. I'm not even sure it can be done again. Some of the parts are antique such as the pickups and bridge. If you're really interested in something like this and want me to see what parts I can find, drop me a line via the website and I'll try and see what parts are available. Cheers.

    The Maplewood doesn’t sound as warm as mahogany which is key to the Tony Iommi Sound

    • @TonyEdwardsGuitars
      @TonyEdwardsGuitars  Před 3 lety +6

      I'm not sure it makes as much difference as people suggest. The pickups are very much the leading part of the tone because they are so overwound and the magnets are ceramic and therefore particularly strong.
      Where the wood may have some impact is the in the attack character of the note - it may be a bit sharper as the high end will probably be a touch more present with the ebony fretboard, and the sustain may be a bit stronger with the density and mass of the maple.
      I'm about to find out as my customer has just commissioned a copy of the Monkey SG

    Completely overblown and over saturated. Have you have never mixed guitars in a track context? This represents the lifeless side of Iommi's tone. No dynamics and absolutely sterile.

      It's good to have choices. This guitar exists for those who want it. Seems like an exquisitely build guitar with great attention put into it's design and details.
