- In this week's video, I discuss a new ultralight dark cloth I've been using for the past year or so. As a matter of full disclosure, I paid full price for the dark cloth, I don't have any affiliation with Wanderer, and they don't know I've produced this video. That would be nice . I'll add it to the list. For the cheapskates out there I have had success with a black travel towel onto which I have sewn a layer of waterproof ripstop nylon. 440g weight. I carry a couple of plastic clips (like large clothes pins) to hold it round the camera. It is great protection for the camera in the bag and works as a rain cover for the camera or sometimes me (I'm in Scotland so this is an important feature!).
And you tell, instead of showing, with the cinching procedure. What's up with that? That light bleed shot was not sexy. However, I use a BlackJacket in most cases and a a Harrison in the urban, "need to be aware of my surroundings," type shooting scenario. I like the idea of lighter weight, but the Harrison works fine and weight can be good for wind resistance. The Blackjacket of course is most secure. Nice to see that there are more dark cloth sellers out there. LF ain't dead yet!
Thanks, Ben. Very helpful. I think, not being a hiker, I'll go for one of their heavier (lined in black) models.
I recently bought a couple of dark cloths from Wanderer. The Chance of rain version, which is amazing and super dark but its big and heavy, and the ultra lite version. I was having issues using the BTZS hood with the Chamonix as well, plus the elastic was getting stretched out.
I have one of these as well and it's been great to use. Great product, fits in my bag easily, and seems very durable.
Ebony produced the best dark cloth imo. White on the outside and black on the inside. It weighed the same as the wanderer and was completely waterproof. No light intruded from the outside through the fabric. However, the outer layer waterproof coating started to flake off after 10 years of hard use. Oh yeah, it was really expensive. RIP Ebony.
i tried making something like this a few years ago. basically a white nylon cloth sewn to a black nylon cloth with an elastic draw string on one end and some velcro to optionally turn it into a tube. it leaked light similar to this one but it rolled down so small i figured it was a decent trade off. ive yet to make a second better version.
It’s the best dark cloth I’ve ever owned! Well worth the cost. Although, I can’t use it as an extra layer of warmth like my old one! 😂 Can’t wait for your Chamonix review Ben!
very tempting already…
One of these days I’m going to get a proper dark cloth. I use an old long black skirt that my wife trashed lol
Cool I will check them out.😊
Nice & Thanks :)
