Yeah those guys are ridiculous. The range of catapults, the speed of regular archers and the stopping power of a cave troll, all in a unit that you can hide in a tower.
The only balancing force for these guys is how expensive and time consuming they were to make. I can't imagine you'd ever be able to pump them out in a PVP match.
When you think about, that one lone enemy builder was really smart move by the AI, you lost far more in collateral damage from your own catapults than they could ever hope for with a regular assualt.

No. He's alright but a few factions make him useless while being expensive as hell. Namely, elves.
He's not as good on skirmish, but on war of the ring you can literally just send him to the enemies base at the start and destroy it.

I've never played the game, but I remember that the dwarf-heroes had an ability that could easily whip out entire legions.

pfft, counter with melee infantry and archers, or just build some walls...
For melee infantry, counter with axe throwers. For archers, make 2 cavalry units and watch the video to see how to use them. For walls, they are a high cost/high risk investment, not a good idea for early-mid game :(
but walls are great for creating a funnel to guide the enemy armies through...
each race has a specialty and a weakness.

My strategy was to play the elves on helm's deep and fill the walls with upgraded mirkwood archers. Rain hell on orcs like napalm on Charlie. Also cockneys are London not Yorkshire 😂

Then you build bases exclusively to add defense, and fill the towers with mirkwood whilst the ai stand in front of walls
TMW: Midgeman there's a glitch where if you put archers on the wall by the top of helms deep they almost have infinite range, it's kinda tricky to do it though and it might not work on all versions
Winner2003 Thats why its a 1.00 patch. Thousands of patches were made after the unlmited archer range thing, and kept coming unoffically as well. Gamereplays community made a lot of awesome patches to balance the game, and its a lot of fun.
But yeah, archer-helmsdeep thing was so much fun lol.
My strategy was to make a custom human hero with nothing but the fully upgraded "summon army" spell. If I remember right, there is no cost, the cool down is low, and you summon about 6 platoons of soldiers with each cast. Balanced :D

this was one of my favorite games as a kid, i always played it on xbox 360 with friends until the servers got shut down back when i was still mainly a console gamer. i always wanted the pc version though because of the make your own hero feature and the pc only expansion.
is there really no way to buy this game online today? or do you have to find a disc on ebay or something? and did fans create new servers or is multiplayer still disabled.

God I fucking loved this game. Goblins were so delightful to play as, there was never a better feeling than swamping over your enemy's economy in the early game with rushes, their walls in mid game and disregarding elven arrows of mass destruction through sheer weight and army positioning

the best thing to do when playing goblins is constantly attacking the enmy farms with hordes of infantry, while building up a force of half-trolls, back them up with a couple of giants... and done
@@Heidenspross Correct me if wrong, but could be countered by putting an archer or 2 in towers near a chokepoint to render the infantry useless while mustering an army of your own. Since they would spend more on goblins than a tower and 2 average archers, they would theoretically be able to get a better army or atleast an equal army to stand up to them. Only problem is if your mordor, which can't put archers in towers.

I also loved the custom maps. Some really cool ones with the whole trillogy being played out on one map. Fight Lurtz. Have the battle of helmsdeep and survive the haradrim with frodo and sam. Some really cool stuff was made.
it was even more fun with the glitch where you could mix up all the diferent abilitys.

Ahh, yes the heroes were perfectly balanced. I had some Dwarf number 7 that had a jump and like 4 earthquake abiities. Youd send him somewhere, and he would just destroy a whoe army and the base. Then youd wait for cd and send him to destroy another faction
Or Human number 8 who could one-shot Nazguls on wraithbeasts and the big elephants with one spear throw
Or wizard number 69 who can literally just turn the enemy's whole army to your side forever. Potentially giving you a double army.
My favorite experience playing this was when I played war of the ring and was attacked by a dwarf army. The dwarf hero, at level 1, walked right past my three battalions of elf archers and 1v1'd my fortress while my archers fired at him. He broke it and killed one archer group and by then there were two dwarf warrior groups approaching and I had no money.
Or having your hero run around and summon entire armies out of thin air.
Or making a wizard with nothing but aoe, like fireball and wind. One shooting entire battalions no matter what spell used.
And then word of power for good measure.
you people know that only works on easiest dificulty setting, try that same tactic with a strong AI without handicap...

Balrog and sauron combined attack was my ultimate strat in this. Saurons near infinite health and insta kill everything dmg was just unbeatable especially with a balrog assist.
I used to make a custom hero that would demolish Sauron, high auto attack combined with long range means sauron cant do squat but get shot at and die. He should invest in some speedy boots like Galadriel
I've killed Sauron a few times. Horse archers usually does it. Usually with some elite cavalry to keep saurons minions at bay as well.
I used to create glitched heroes that had the 5 ultimate abilities from the other hero classes.
Gimli can solo Sauron with one hand without tire himself

This brings me back to the good ol' Stronghold Crusader times. When in trouble in the campaign... Memories where the baracks of the enemies are build. Restart and build flowers on those spots! That game was so much fun to cheese... Having trouble holding the enemies off? Make sure you leave a path open into your castle... make sure it's a long zigzag line and in plain view of archers. loved the game

My best memory of this game is being Saruman in Rivendel, using towers to shoot down any elves that came for my gate (i built an ARMY of guard towers, nothing came through), then spending 45 minutes to build enough mines. I took down all my enemy's buildings until they couldn't create any more units. Then i made a line of mines from rivendel to isengard, where the elves were holed up (oh the irony) and circled around the fortress too for good measure. 45 minutes of fuckery to create one chain reaction to blow up isengard. Ah, good times.
or you can just play the most balanced faction, Elves and their machinegun magic arrows that can slay anything

something really balanced is that Gondor can get a view of the full map and call in a earthquake that almost destroys every type of building or call in the army of the dead that's invincible and can instantly kill full battalions of units or decimate level 10 heroes
Just play elves with the arrow upgrade. It's a cake walk.
Except vs Rohirrim with Theoden and Eomer, with glorious charge they will mow down all your sentinels and mirks.

if you play a hard AI you can still loose,
take mordor, cast the tainted ground, send several waves of weak orcs to keep them occupied, then hit the flank with some haradrim lancers, and clean up with a couple of trolls... done

@@My360AndMe Oh it also took me a while to get it working. Looking for answers for a few days. I followed the videos to install perfectly and couldn't understand why it kept crashing for me. It's been a few months since then and if I recall it was some file needing to be moved, deleted, or added that for me fixed it instantly. So I was able to get all the BFME games.
@@lukasred7 try getting battlefield vietnam to run on a modern pc, I had to burn it to 7 CDs to get it to even install, lol.

I remember playing this once at an internet cafe. It was an FFA with my friend and his brother, but we were on a crescent shaped map with me in the middle.
I was an elven faction, and immediately crippled my friend’s brother with just my hero and the Tom Bombadil support power.
My friend didn’t attack for a long time because he was a human faction and turtled up, building a huge army which appeared when I had very little army because I was just building one of everything to learn what it was. Luckily, I grabbed the Ring just then and destroyed his whole army with Galadriel.

I came in second in a school-tournament the first and only time I played this game. Played defensively and racked up score to win the time victory. It's an annoying way to play the game, but if you've played the game for a long time and still lose to a first-timer, you don't really get the right to be salty about it, because at the end of the day, _you're the one who sucks._

I have the full collection of games on CD but it doesn't work on Windows 10 anymore. If only EA weren't focusing on their microtransactions, we could've had this masterpiece on Origin or something.

My favorite thing to do in the first BFM was to make an army of peasants, upgrade them with armor and weapons, then take over the enemy with what looks like an angry mob!
best memories of the game are maxing out armies with friend and sending them to battle then we both span our powers and afterwards both armies are totally destroyed and not an inch of ground was gained. Balrog is op as fuck and can pop up under your army sending everyone flying, as is army of the dead, which aragon and men can use virtually creating an invincible army.

The best way to play this game is to set up in helms deep with the Elven archers and just stack the walls with fully upgraded archers. You're basically invincible.

Me and my cousin optimized our strategy to the point where we can fairly consistently face 6 brutals. I'm (usually) men, he is always dwarves, and we build choke point battle towers and defend until we can build a hero party and use our powers and heroes to destroy the various brutals.
Goblins are the uber aggressive in your face shitrush faction. You pump out unending legions of dirt-cheap Yorkshire warriors, build aggressive forward mines and attack your opponent's resource buildings (make sure to click behind the building so that they clump up at the edges, resulting in bigger DPS). Meanwhile, you build cave trolls and spider riders, possibly the chad goblin spearmen as well, to finish 'em off.
Brings me back to better times...

I only remember OP archers and INCREDIBLY OP Aragorn just killing everyone and even being able to heal right up shortly after.
You could've saved yourself with the balrog at the end but ya didn't even seem to notice you had enough points for it.
I'm surprised you're not playing 2.02. The community is quite active on gamereplays.org & TRA3 (moved to the community discord). The entire game is streamlined with an installer and it's own publicly hosted servers, I'm genuinely disappointed that it wasn't pointed out in the video, but I'll attribute that to some poor googling.
The tooltips redone, all settings updated for the modern era, modern gpu support, tons of new customization, balance, tooltips explaining all hero abilities, their damage, etc- Even tooltips explaining the hidden abilities on units like Gandalf.
Great care is taken to properly balance the game by Excelsior and the other fantastic devs on the dev team. Seriously, please give it some sort of exposure in the description or SOMETHING. They've worked so hard, and I'd love to see that hard work pay off.

In case you thought goblins weren't overpowered enough, they can also take over wild creature camps to recruit them. These creatures are also super op.
I was always fond of just having an army of mirkwood archers who insta-gibbed anything within range.
