So glad to see you stepping out with this Ernie Ball, a great instrument for its intended use/style of play.
Maybe you could someday look at custom ordering yourself a G&L guitar. It's easy to do, you just start checking off the boxes as to how you want them to build your guitar (kind of the same way you can order a Warmoth Custom Neck).

The switches and knobs were positioned so you could do just what you did with your hand by accident. They were designed to be quickly accessed within the strum radius for quick chnages while playing. Its a feature, not a design flaw. Not sure if anyone mentioned it yet, but you actually can connect the piezo and the magnetic pickups to different amps/inputs like you suggested in the video. That’s what the stereo/mono button on the back is for - you can use a TRS Y cable. (this is what JP actually does live - the piezo goes direct to the board and the magnetics to his amps/rack)

I only know this though because I just got one recently and went and was getting frustrated when I read the same thing you said somewhere else until I looked at the diagram that comes with it and then did some more research on the evolution of the Majesty’s. Trogly, The main reason for twisting wires is HUM reduction. Everytime the wires twist by 180° the hum is picked up out of phase and cancels the previous noise picked up by the wires. Twisting wires reduces noise pickup under 200 MHZ better than shielding! Open up microphone cable and you will see the inner conductors twisted. Twisting wires AND shielding provides the best noise interference reduction.

Trogly, there is nothing wrong with the piezo pickup on the G string. I’m pretty sure what is happening is that the height of the G string saddle is not adjusted correctly. If there is not enough pressure on the saddle, then the string cannot reliably transfer vibration to the piezo element and you get that rattling sound. I know because I have the exact same guitar and this happened to me once before and setting up the saddles and bridge properly solved that issue. The bridge and saddle is just not set up correctly. You probably just need to adjust the height of the saddle for the g string.
I have this exact same guitar in 7 string and it is my favorite guitar and the best guitar I have ever played. But honestly you really were not prepared for this review at all and you made a lot of mistakes in describing it (the middle position is not out of phase, it is splitting the humbuckers into single coils). Also the nut is a compensated nut, it adjusts the take off point for each string individually to improve the intonation. It works very well and all music man guitars have that. Open position chords sound much more in tune with better intonation compared to traditional guitars with the typical nut design.
But really I am very certain that the rattling sound on the g string is due to the saddle height not being adjusted correctly. That is a set up issue. You are giving the false impression to so many that there is a quality control issue when really sweetwater most likely just did not set up the guitar properly or something happened during shipping.

  • @JoeHeisler
    @JoeHeisler Před 2 lety +7

I’m on the opposite side of the spectrum, I’ve never got along with Gibson-style guitars and I really love my Majesties.
The neck mahogany is darker because they use a different kind of mahogany for the neck. And nowadays on most newer ones the wings are actually okume. Also the flame is more than a veneer it’s a top that gets routed into the body iirc. Even on the original models it was a maple top and just laser-etched and painted to look like carbon fiber.
The nut is compensated which improves overall intonation imo (mostly on the g string) but I do have to really lubricate my nuts on my Majesties.
Personally I love the control placement since I’m usually not Cory Wong strumming on a majesty, I’ll use a different guitar for that haha. The JPs have worse control placement imo, the jack is a little higher on the body and the switch is much more in the way (taller and nearer to the strings)
Also jps use 9v, I think they said that the Majesty went to AAs because they’re easier to find on the road.
And someone else mentioned it but the output jack is stereo, I run a stereo cable and use a splitter box to run 2 separate inputs into my Axe Fx. The switch in the back (labeled on the control plate) toggles between mono and stereo output modes.

I have this exact guitar! It really sounds amazing, though my skills in no way justify my ownership of it. XD In regards to having only one jack, it's worth mentioning that you can use a TRS (i.e. stereo) cable with it. When the switch in the electronics compartment is set to "stereo", it feeds the output from the magnetic pickups to one part of the cable and the piezo to the other, IIRC. As far as the magnetic pickups go, I use the bridge for most of my more raucous-sounding distorted tones, but I use both if I want it to mellow out a bit. I'd generally use the neck for that on my Les Paul, but I find the middle position works better for that on the Majesty. I also use it for ambient-sounding cleans, because the neck sounds a too flat by itself. Where the neck pickup really comes into its own is for lead playing high up on the fretboard. It gives the notes clarity, roundness, and warmth and prevents them from being an icepick to your ears.

@@stvo2009 It's situationally useful depending on what you're playing. When it's something that warrants a more acoustic sound, it's fantastic. It can also add brightness and snappiness to a clean sound when you mix it with the magnetic pickups.
If you want to hear the piezo through a normal (non-acoustic) guitar amp, I have a video up of a half-assed piezo improv with my Majesty running through a JVM410H and 1960A cab. Sound quality's not the best since I didn't realize it was recording webcam audio instead of my SM57, but it should give you the general character of the sound if you ignore the clipping and other webcam audio artifacts.

This seems kind of similar to the Schecter C-1 E/A, uses the 3 way switch for piezo/blend/humbuckers, though it only has a push pull for coil splits, no phase or boost (I have a pedal for that anyway), BUT it also has a tone control for the piezo, which is what sold me on it, piezo wounds too tinny otherwise, and it’s under $1000… sadly it only comes in one color “Tiger Eye” flame veneer.

  • @BrianMark75

You were surprised it was only one output jack, but failed to realize the stereo setting gives you mag and piezo as the stereo sends. Less cables is always preferred by me... and I appreciate the way they handled that. I can split it at the other end that way and not need two cables from the guitar, or even send them to an A/B/Y box and foot switch between pickups if I really wanted.

Nobody can feature/showcase a guitar like you can and it's very informational/ entertaining! I'd love to see other PRS models, MusicMan, Schecter, Heritage, etc... as you always do the guitar justice and we can learn how Gibson's build quality stacks up against the other brands. Your reviews help me appreciate the guitars and I've already bought a Gibson LP 60's standard just because of your video (which I'm super happy with) . Keep up the great work Trogly!

The G string saddle isnt working well because there isnt enough pressure on the piezo. The saddle needs to be raised to put more pressure on the piezo to transfer vibrational energy to electricity effeciently. If raising the saddle would put that string higher than the other ones then the bridge posts need to be lowered so that you are getting both good downward pressure on the piezos and equal and comfortable playing height.

The truss rod control is easy to use, but wow did I ever have to use it a lot. Wasn't crazy about in-between tones on the DiMarizios but overall really liked the guitar. That G-string sounds more like a nut/saddle issue than an electronic one but I suppose it could be. Disappointing that it left the factory and retailer like that but it could have happened in transit. Again thanks for this review.

It doesn't have two outputs cause its stereo, with the push of the button on the back you switch between mono and stereo so you can use a stereo cable out of the guitar into a splitter box for a bi amp setup, also that's why its has individual volumes for the magnetic and piezo pickups alongside the blend pot on the back.

  • @djencode

Probably easy to find out if you just look around but I can't be arsed at this time of night... 🤣🤣

Trogly... love your vids dude, but a simple review of the product specs on the the website would have prevented you from spewing a lot of wrong facts about the guitar. The nut is a compensated nut and EB has been doing them forever. The push-push splits the 2 humbuckers in the middle position. The Majesty does not come in any kind of un-loaded option. Aside from colors/woods, all of the Majesty guitars have the same inlays (20th and limited runs excluded), & same electronics. The old JP models were the only ones that had a basic no frills package.

  • @pfg_pedals

I think the saddle is actually slightly loose and causing a buzz that the piezo picks up, but the magnetic pickups do not. Also does the stereo output allow you to separate the piezo and the magnetic to different amps? That would make the most sense.
Edit: after checking the Ernie Ball forums it seems that my assumption about the stereo output is correct. You can use a stereo Y cable or splitter box to send the piezo to a separate amp or to a DI box and to the PA.
