  • My presentation was about understanding the concept of systematic oppression and institutionalised racism. This ranged from presenting ideas about the current structure we live under in the country of Australia and its perceptions of Indigenous Affairs. I speak about stereotypes and the approaches consecutive governments have taken to 'deal' with the Aboriginal people throughout the 228 year period of colonisation. Questions are raised about the effects of some of these actions pursued by governments towards Aboriginal people and the long term effects they carry for future generations of the longest surviving culture in the world.
My name is Kyol Blakeney. I have served as Indigenous Officer of the Students' Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Sydney for 2 years and was the NSW State ATSI Officer for the National Union of Students in 2014. Currently, I am the President of the SRC at the University of Sydney and a vocal Aboriginal Rights Activist. I am also studying a Bachelor of Primary Education.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Wow, this gentleman spoke so bravely and intellectually about the concerns of a population we don't often hear from in the United States. The data he shared on incarceration is just heartbreaking. I wonder if there is any location in the world where the indigenous people were not hurt, harmed, and oppressed as a result of the immigration of white people.

Me and my friend, both coloured, and from sydney, drove through cootamundra on a road trip over 10 years ago. We were steadily driving through the town (40-50kms) with many other cars in front and behind. A police car was driving in the opposite direction and eyed us out. He then u turned and followed us for a good minute or two before pulling us over. He asked for my licence. He then began searching around my car and asked if we had been drinking ( no breathalyser) and went back to his car w my licence for 2-5 min. He said little to nothing apart from asking for my licence. He then returned and gave back my licence and sent us on our way.
There seemed to be no practical reason to stop us. In fact it felt intimidating, almost routine. He never explained to us why he pulled us over.
Only in hindsight do i feel this is how and maybe all police officers approach coloured people. There are only two ethnic groups in coota: white and indigenous.
Anyone think im looking too much into it?

Now, try to remove "coloured", "ethnic groups" from your statement, you will find that police's breach of power does not constitute so-called racial profiling

The statistics can't be denied. There are problems but how to adress them.
Generalisations don't show the people that don't fail and are succesfull
If you studie the diversity within the group you will notice that not onley the circumstance but more importantly individuel choices predict if you will fail or not.
If a white person choices for , no education .party drinking and drugs, crime the outcome will be the same . Everybody knows right from wrong and you have a free choice.
The solutions can onley be found not at group level but at individuel level.
    Victimhood won't help.

I can't take someone serious who actively is getting paid by a system that creates and causes oppression for those in poverty.
