I took a class in college at a small Christian school and we read every book you recommended in this video. We would have assigned readings and for class sit around a conference table and discuss interpretive questions that we had about the text. It led to some of the most intense conversation I’ve experienced and wish I could be in that environment again.
sounds like a total dream! hope i can experience something like this myself- i long for meaningful and deep conversations
I also took a class at my small Christian college that was very similar. I feel like I would enjoy it so much more now in my later 20s than I would have back then at 18/19 years old. I felt that class had too much reading for my busy late teen life that wanted to spend more time with friends or playing videogames or pickup basketball. The reading requirements was pretty much a book a week. I was also taking 4 or 5 more classes and reading would always be on the back burner. I would just read the spark notes or fake my way through discussion. I literally never read any of the assignments in any classes because it was too time consuming or my attention span wasn't having it. My goal for 2023 was to read 20 books which was bold, but in combination with some audio books I finished the year with 28! In the next year I want to read some more of these deeper and philosophical type books to get the content I should have gotten from those college classes I skated through without really gaining knowledge
What school was it?
This sounds like my college experience as well. It was a wonderful time and environment. My only regret is the fact that I know I would appreciate it more now than I did back then.

Examining yourself feels so rich. I have a book I usually write in about self improvement and stuff, but I have never wrote things more subjective about reality and life. I'm getting into it right now!
I used to write a bit of philosophy in a notebook back in highschool and reading it back makes me feel like I did a good job back then working on myself.
So exciting!!
I've noticed that I do this with myself all the time. In my head I'll have conversations with myself to figure things out but I've never been good at expressing or communicating my understandings with others. Maybe putting pen to paper could help me address some of these shortcomings that I know I have. Thanks for the advice.

I think that this would honestly be very helpful for me as someone who has Borderline Personality Disorder. I’ve always been told that I’m very self aware by people in my life, but I don’t have a very strong sense of self and I usually don’t know how I think or feel unless I’m talking out loud. I’d love to be able to look back and remember exactly what it is that I was thinking in a moment of clarity or stability in my identity.
I do this in my journal/diary every now and then, maybe once a week. I do the monologues, but in high school I would do them as "interviews" where I imagined another person asking me these questions. Now I am thinking of doing them in a separate notebook.
I was looking for something to watch while 'ancientifying' my journal lol. I had been thinking about taking journaling to a new level in 2024, this is a great idea. Thanks.

I share a love for villains in stories. I haven’t given it a lot of consideration, but I suppose it’s because the villain presents an alternative point of view from the cookie cutter standard. They force us to puzzle out what the right answer is rather than just taking a view by default.
Yea my daily journal shifted towards something like a soliloquies, i definitely will try to write my own monologue, thats a good tip:)

I keep alot of thinking like this in my head. It usually happens when im at work bc my job doesn't require me to be completely engaged in my work. It also happens in the car when im driving too. Whenever i write journal entries or now my morning pages from The Artist Way this type of thinking will come up. I like the idea of completely moving this thinking onto the pages instead of keeping it in my head all the time🤖
Hey Parker, I’m a junior in college and am currently pursuing computer science as my major, but am considering either switching or double majoring in philosophy, but I’m a little nervous about what possible careers my love of philosophy and deep thinking could lead to. How interesting! I'm not philosophical ( as in I'm not familar you the subject) but I think the concept of soliloquies can help with our internal conflict. Things like depression and anxiety. I think it could be helpful for anyone. I think i've also been doing a mash of solliloquies and diary writing which I think is very unique:)

I've been doing soliloquies for the past couple of years without knowing if there's a name for it. Handwritting on copy paper with fountain pens. I've been thru existential crisis, asking for who or what is God. Some people don't praise this or that god, why the Godless people live better than me? And I think I found the answer by myself, but I'm still too young to be certain. Through this method I start my faith again from scratch, being born and raised in catholic family leave me no choice, because everytime I pray in the church I don't know whom to asked, I don't feel like my prayer has been answered. But leaving my religion lead me to find my own faith.

Great video I am enjoying it very much. I am greatly appreciative for the work you put in, I’m currently in the same mindset of learning about myself using philosophy and reflection. I am a follower of Christ and I still have many questions about God and the soul. I have been reading lots of classic literature to answer some questions about life I have been looking for and looking at different philosophers as well as the scriptures. I have a notebook I wrote in but I want to start a dedicated commonplace notebook as well. Thanks.

I would recommend Thomas Kempis, The Imitation of Christ (1418). A tremendously powerful body of work on the life of Christ and the applicability to our lives. For a more mystical account of the Christian monastic life, The Cloud of Unknowing (14th century).

2 ways to do it
1. Monologue with yourself - can be mini essays about random things you are thinking about and going a little deeper into it, helps to know yourself better, explore different facets of your mind
2. Dialogue between you and another character (can be a conceptual character like "Lady Wisdom" or a younger/older version of you)
2 types of questions to ask yourself
1. World view (does god exist, nature of reality, do I have a soul, what is truth and goodness and beauty)
2. Subjective (personal things related to your life)

Maybe late on this, but I also have found myself constantly at the crossroads of dystopian tech future noir and Shire-like subsistence partying. I'll take them separately of course, but also I think Solarpunk is the closest we have gotten so far to a synthesis, a futuristic green aesthetic. Becky Chambers' Robot & Monk novels are a pretty nice example, I think.

Love your videos.They’ve inspired me to start writing journal and commonplace book for recently.I first wrote my journal with the ballpoint pen i usually write I have been trying out fountain pens like yesterday I got a newfountain pen and flushed it a little bit but the ink colour was brighter than usual i tried some techniques to improve it but I messed up😅😅guess i’ll have to use some simple pens like my ballpointpen to actually enjoy writing journal(sorry for my bad english)

I think you’re far from the only one who LOVED Anthony Hopkins from Westworld, honestly im even surprised hearing him being called a villain because you are so drawn towards him and his perspective. It was the first time I properly was introduced to Anthony Hopkins as an actor, I think by then I might’ve seen Silence of the Lambs as a kid, but Westworld just showed his perfect subtlety in playing such a multi-layered character that is both kind, warm, compassionate and completely apathetic and cruel at the same time. The man never fails to impress and since then I’ve seen so many more of his films, The Bounty comes to mind, The Remains of the Day, Bran Stoker’s Dracula. Or even more stereotypically survival/action films like The Edge he knocks out of the park. If its a villain or a hero or just an everyday person, he can make it fascinating. So looking forward to One Life and Freud’s Last Session coming up.

One thing I've realized is that it may be better to do this digitally now, so that you can use the entirety of your writings (as text files) with AI. But writing it physically is more satisfying.

I feel like I have always been a deep thinker... I think deeply about things. But I have a hard time really concentrating on my thoughts. Recently I've been thinking about death a lot. Not in a depressed way but a curious way. Why some people mourn over certain deaths, and some people don't mourn the same way, when we are all humans. I think about what causes sadness, joy and other emotions.
