- Fury Scene in the film "Midnight Express" (1978) directed by Alan Parker. The main actor is Brad Davis as "Bill Hayes".
Midnight Express is a 1978 American film directed by Alan Parker and produced by David Puttnam. It is based on Billy Hayes's 1977 book and was adapted into the screenplay by Oliver Stone. It starred Brad Davis, Irene Miracle, Bo Hopkins, Paolo Bonacelli, Paul L. Smith, Randy Quaid, Norbert Weisser, Peter Jeffrey and John Hurt. Hayes was a young American student sent to a Turkish prison for trying to smuggle hashish out of Turkey. The movie deviates from the book's accounts of the story -- especially in its portrayal of Turks -- and some have criticized the movie version, including Billy Hayes himself. Later, both Stone and Hayes expressed their regret on how Turkish people were portrayed in the movie.

I remember watching this scene when the movie first came out and being stunned, almost paralysed by the portrayal of righteous rage; you can feel every nanosecond of it. RIP Brad Davis. Gone too soon.
i remember exactly the same
He didn't win because of his gay scene in bathroom
@@powerslave7876 Shut up
This movie has so much violence against Turks. He wants to rape their children, tear out their tongue, impale them to a hook. Nothing righteous.
i heard someone who was working on the film got suspended for coming up with that scene
this scene should have won Davis an oscar, its one of the most intense scenes ive ever seen, the backround music is a big part but ive never seen an actor work into a frenzy like this, to me it shows the extremes a human being can be pushed to
he was on drug for doing this scene, read his biography poor man
@@Marketoromagnolo No. He wasn't on drug for doing this scene. Don't spread the rumors. The fact is his drug consumption came only after this movie. He's very intense and wild actor, too bad he died too soon.

@@yongsua1989 well it' was not a drug but it ruined his life and career. AFTER MIDNIGHT , THE LIFE AND DEAD OF BRAD DAVIS
At first it's like "hell yeah! Kick his ass!" But it quickly turns into the manifestation of pure rage and hatred. It's one of the few scenes in a movie that you only need to see once, and you'll never forget it.
He still deserved it.
So true.
And at last it was like "hell yeah, kick his ass"
Well wasn't he getting raped and beat you
I've always thought of this as the best film I've ever seen. I've heard a few of my pals say the same thing. It's very dark and it depends what your opinion is, but there's just so many things about it, you could cut the atmosphere with a knife. The acting, the story, the realistic fight scene you see here. It's been knocked for the way it portrays all the turks as monsters and bent and perhaps goes too far in that respect. And is only loosely based on what really happened, but I still think it's underrated with a rating of 7.8 imdb. I'd give it 9. Only Shawshank you could say is better, but I think it should be up there with the best movies ever made myself personally. There's something about Prison movies that really hits home.
RIP John Hurt and Brad Davis, two terrific actors.
I remember seeing this in 1983 at age 12, I'm glad they didn't give Brad David a gun during this scene because I've never seen a human being work himself into a maniacal rage, absolutely INCREDIBLE scene that should have won an Academy Award on it's own merits
Most realistic portrayal of rage I have ever seen
I still wonder why Brad Davis wasn't nominated for best actor for this film.... _; his acting was terrific in this film..
+Peter the Man you're right
Maybe there were just too many good performances. John Hurt was nominated for Supporting Actor.
The film garnished a considerable amount of negative press, especially from the Turks. "For a nation of pigs, it sure is funny you don't eat 'em."
He was quoting a scene from the movie.
Peter the Man Because sometimes Hollywood can be really stupid.

This is top of the list one of my favorites movies. It’s an emotional roller coaster. I’ve watched it several times and it never gets old.
Agree. I have never - ever- seen such a convincing acting performance as Davis in this film. How he could deliver the scenes such as this time and time again throughout the film is truly amazing.
I find whenever I recommend this film to those who have not seen it they all, without fail, have the same reaction as you and I.
An absolute colossal film.
Eddie Ingalls Yes! Truly a work of art! And I always recommend it. Thanks
I love how NOBODY do NOTHING to help Rifki, then you can see the kind of person he is/was. BEST FILM EVER!

I find myself remembering a quote from, of all things, The Chronicles of Narnia Prince CaspianL "Get treated like an animal long enough, see what you become."
I live in Israel , and the employment for us arabs in here is complete garbage , so I work a shitty job just to keep going in life . a couple years ago I was an overly calm , normal guy , now I find myself waking up at 3 am running through the house cause of minimal panic attacks , I became overly angry and anxious around people . and I have headaches most of the time , so yeah . this quote hits home hard with me :( .
This movie is frightening, incredible, so angering... I was glad when it was over, but fuck am I glad I watched it.
This is probably one of the best scenes in movie history and no one ever deserves to have their face smashed into the old dirty concrete steps and have their tongue bit out more than rifky

this scene also shows when adrenaline is pumping it doesnt matter what size a person is, there is nothing you can do to a person in a situation like that short of a bullet in the head to stop them
Fuckin a'
The greatest part of this scene is the prisoners in the backround watching knowing theres nothing they can do to stop the uncontrolled rage of another human being knowing theyll be killed if they try to intervene
another great part is the guards leaving rifki with a pat on the back, as he lost all his money he was useless to them and they let him get what was coming to him
The other inmates all hated Rifki aswell thats why they didnt intervene.
no one liked him cause he was a snirch
No one likes a snitch
Or they just didn’t care about the guy he was freakin out on
Saw this in the theater when it came out in 1978. Watching this 38 years later and it's still harrowing.
Probably the first adult film I went to see and I was disturbed by it! People in the theatre cheered at the end.
I first saw it when I was 12 years, on tv , now I’m 26 . I was kinda petrified throughout the whole film .
@ferzy09 Check my channel
As a kid I found this video in my Dad's collection and made the mistake of watching it, this scene was a real smack in the face and totaly overwhelming. As a youngster it was too much and freaked me out for many years. That being said it is very well done, Davis is brilliantly manic and the music is suitably deranged. As webgeek6 says though, it is total fiction, as is much of the film when compared to the book.
My friend made that same mistake except he watched it on hbo while flipping through channels as a kid. He recommended me the film since he knows I like films like this and man it did not disappoint at all
It really freaked me out as a teenager watching it on HBO in the 80s, and was immensely disturbing.
You're right. I've read the novel twice. If it's to be believed then in real life all he did was punch Rifki.
One of the most satisfying scenes of justice in cinema history.
I was in my early-20s when Midnight Express came out. It was harrowing then, and it still hasn’t lost any of its terror. It’s ironic that the real Billy Hayes was a sane rational person, compared to the crazed brilliance of Brad Davis.
Now that’s what u call a melt down

“Let me tell you something Joe Rogan. Back in 84 me and my goombahs we’re moving moving 4 ounces of coke through Istanbul! It was a bloodbath with the fucking cops, a plane, and stripper names Sarine!”
The scene in which Brad Davis bites out the tongue of Rifki upset the crew so much that they all walked off the set, leaving Alan Parker to shoot it with his two actors. For the scene, Davis carried a pig's tongue around in his mouth!
Doncha just hate bigots?
lol people were so sensitive back then. Today this is laughable.
In a nation of pigs it's sure is funny he had a pig's tongue in his mouth

Ok this is good info to know about this movie.
This movie has aged incredibly well. It still stands strong after 35+ years. This scene in particular could have been an acting class. Davis deserved an Oscar.
Did he bite his tongue???
Barbarism!!!
46 years
Brad Davis' raw talent on full display. It's sad how painfully underrated he was.
My uncle (dad’s oldest brother) showed me this film when I was 9. This scene never left me. I always remembered the name of this movie for that reason. The one where the man, resorting to his primal human nature caused by his loss of sanity due to injustice, bites off a snitch’s tongue 😂🤣
Amazing movie. The right anger.
This scene never fails to give me goosebumps...
Such a great scene, the injustice just sent him over the edge and he begins to lose his sanity. It's also poetic justice that the snitch gets his tounge bitten off.
Ironically, the actor who played Rifiki played one of the four libertines in Pasolini's Salo, the 120 days of sodom where he orders the death of a teenage male prisoner by having his tongue ripped out and here he is a couple years later as a prisoner who has his tongue ripped out
Chop well, it's karma. Great performance in both films

Paolo Bonacelli.
That's a great film as well. The nastiest part is when they all dined on fesces...

I do not feel one iota of sorrow for that asshole. He deserved what he got, killed Hurt's cat and was a low, underhanded scumbag. I would have gouged his eyes out.
Mia Honeyrose All police informers should get the death penalty. If the police are so smart, they should solve all the crimes on THEIR OWN. That's what they are getting paid for. As for me, if I turn anyone over to the police I'll do it for free, I'm no snitch; and if I turn anyone over to the police I'll NOT remain anonymous, I'm no coward, either.
shrapnel77
+ Wes Bervig Actually, police informants do more good than bad. Think about it for a second. Sometimes informers can get into certain places or positions where the police can't - they are much more undercover than regular officers. As well as this, you need to consider the fact that the police ain't lazy - they might be paying someone to uncover information, but that is usually a result of them not gaining or a lack of sufficient access to the criminal organization in the first place.
The camera man must've been scared of this.
The whole crew apparently walked off the set when they heard how the fight scene was going to go down, so it was pretty much just Alan Parker filming Billy and Rifki going at it (with some scattered extras in the earlier shots of this scene).
how can such actor and acting not even nominated for an oscar!
He died in 1991
I don't know why but when I watch this, I feel better. Better than what, I have no idea. Maybe because the acting is so freaking, incredibly amazing. I've never seen rage performed so perfectly.
LA scène culte...Quel acteur! 42 ans après cette scène est toujours à couper le souffle...RIP Brad
Il a pique véritablement une crise de nerfs ,tellement les conditions de tournage étaient éprouvantes
How Brad Davis doesn’t get the Oscar is just ridiculous. There has never been anyone in cinema that’s gone that crazy in front of a camera. Ever period. This was the exact portrayal of someone experiencing insanity. And in the characters case it cannot be classified as temporary insanity because he stays this way after the incident. Like his brain short circuited because of sudden trauma. It’s such a powerful scene and I would say never be matched. Can you imagine if the director after that Scene asked if they could do it again??!! Like hey could I get something more?? Davis would probably walk off the set!
Rifki disliked this video
Why does the Turkish guard pat Rifki on the back literally 5 seconds before Billy starts wailing on him, and does nothing to stop it. That's pretty insincere.
No, they just left the scene real quick.
his money got stolen earlier, i think they let him get whats coming to him
The guards left quickly, and after they left the prisoners closed the doors and played music so the guards wouldn't hear the fight.
Rifke was part of the hierarchy of the politics and ruling class with prisoners. The guards loved him.

It's a shame that he wasn't nominated for the oscars, this scene is a masterpiece. I watched this movie few days ago (I watched it when I was little but I forgot almost everything) and this made me feel all the anger he was feeling through the years inside that place. He really should've won an oscar for this.
Oh my god, the intensity, actually made my teeth grit.
One of the most powerful and disturbing scenes in the history of cinema. My dad rented this on video when I was a young kid and depsite it being an 18 cert he let me watch it; part of me wishes he hadn't because this scene was very traumatic for me and has never truly left me to be honest.

2:17 that must've hurt like hell...
He was like “you can hide under the sink if you want to, but I’m ripping the dam thing off piece by piece until I get to you.” I think that was when Rifki knew that he was screwed and tried to escape instead of fighting back.
That was his tongue he bit off? Dang.

Oliver Stone wrote the screen play and won an Oscar for doing so.
The music in the background is composed of two components. First component is poorly performed and non-popular Turkish mourning song (by a fourth grade local singer) who mentions about the people crying when faced with cruelty. The second component is random audio clips from Turkish movies of late 70's that contain naive statements about maternal love. The film maker successfully creates an atmosphere of brutality, absurdity and disconnectedness by incorporating the sad atmosphere of the local folk song and oversentimentality of random audio cuts (not understandable to non-Turkic audience) from local movies. It is astonishing that how motivated people could be to denigrate and to stigmatize an entire country under the disguise of "humanitarian" and artistic sensitivity by exploiting totally innocent/humane cultural outputs (people mourning over a loss and showing maternal love) of the same country.
Do you by any chance know the name of this song?

I have no words. Did he get an amphetamine injection before this scene? How can an actor do this? Incredible. Frightening. But magnificent portrayal of human psyche when it totally derails.
He was apparently abused as a child and struggled with drug addiction, so he probably tapped into his many years of pent up frustration to come off as completely insane in this scene.
