Really great, thank you. I've especially been getting into string composing through Pro Tools lately and this gives me a bunch more useful tools. Would love to see even more in depth stuff on getting more expressiveness out of Midi strings. Subscribed!
@@jameseverett3449 In this example, each Midi track triggers a different instrument on a different midi channel inside of Kontakt. Thanks for the follow. I will be doing a string programming tip vid in the near future.
Great MIDI editing tips for PT. This is a fast way to split notes out, but if these notes are all routed to the same instrument as before, how can one adjust the individual midi volumes (or any other CC data) of the voices if they are all routed to the same channel, other than changing velocity?
Hi, Thanks for watching. You can easily have other instances of Kontakt or use a multi in Kontakt to do that. I was just focussed on showing the technique in this video.
So Pete I guess that on each track you are opening the orchestral plugin afresh? Isn’t that processor consuming? I’m new to Pro Tools. Am I missing something? PS It sounds fabulous !
Hi Danny. It depends on the session. Some people like to make multis with Kontakt and sometimes I do that as well. In earlier versions of pro tools, using Kontakt Multis was more cpu intensive than one per instrument. I got in the habit of doing things that way for the most part. Another Kontakt tip with PT, if you have a large session with many instances of Kontakt, turn auto save off. It causes hang ups and crashes. You just have to remember to save often.
May I ask a stupid rookie question? In this and the next episode you've got a vertical scrollbar in the midi editor, but in the 3rd (and in mine) it's gone. Why? My mousewheel scrolling is in such huge increments so I can hardly find the notes or the octave I'm looking for.
Hi. Try changing the vertical size of the MIDI Notes. Its the little box with two lines in it on the upper part of the vertical scroll bar. Try clicking on the top or bottom part of that box and see what happens.
@@PeteCalandra I realized that the first track is an instrumental track. I mean the main track with the string chords. The individual tracks below are midi tracks. How can the material sound on the midi tracks? E.g. the violin 1. I only hear the main strings in the instrumental track, but not the individual instruments on the midi tracks. What mistake did I make in routing?
@@tobiasfischer8890 Ok. The original track is an Instrument Track with Kontakt as an Instrument Insert. Kontakt is Multi Timbral. Without me going thru this entire video, from what i remember (and what makes sense to me) i had an Ensemble String program in Midi Channel 1 of Kontakt ( and the instrument track is routed to trigger that) Then in the same instance of Kontakt i have 1st Violins, 2nd Violins, Violas etc... and each one of those is set to receive a successive Midi Channel. V1 on Midi Channel 2, V2 on Midi Channel 3, Vlas on Midi Channel 4 etc.... Then each of the MIDI Tracks that have the individual parts have their MIDI Outputs set to trigger the appropriate MIDI Channel in Kontakt. You could also have a separate Instrument Track with Kontakt in each one with the individual sections. That would also work. Either way is fine, just depends on the work flow that is best for you.
If you don’t play the beat, yes. You can try Wait For Note mode. That seems to always capture the first note but it still does better if you come on on time with the click.
I hate the edit window that attached to the bottom of my mix /edit window. B4 uploading the new PT version, the midi edit window wasn't "fixed" to the page. How can I unfix it so that I can manipulate the notes?
Hi, I'm not sure what you mean by not being able to manipulate notes in the MIDI Editor that is attached to the edit page but if you go to the Window pull down menu you can select the stand alone midi editor page. It also gives you the key command you can use

Great video, Pete. Learned new MIDI tricks and dynamic editing ideas.
Thanks much! There are a couple of other "advanced" vids I posted as well...

Nice Video. I usually ALT+Drag the clip to the other tracks and then go in the midi editor and delete the other parts
Thanks for watching James. Thats an excellent way as well but I wanted to show this method as it’s a function not used as often in PT.
Thanks.

Hey Pete, the Strings Track is an instrumental track. The "Close Miking" tracks of each single Instrument are instrumental tracks or Playlists-Tracks?
Not quite sure what you mean... the different mic positions for the sound are controlled by the mixer on the gui of the string library...

Does I the First MIDI Note get captured when recording? So many other DAws. Don’t catch the first MIDI note because the count in is too robotic.
