- World's best pizza oven for wood-fired Neapolitan pies, Big Horn pellet oven set-up and review.
The world's best backyard pizza oven for making wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas for under $200 is the Big Horn. It runs on Traeger-style wood pellets to reach temperatures high above 800. Perfect for an airy and crispy crust cooked in under 2 minutes.
In this video, we unbox the Big Horn wood pellet-fired pizza oven and set it up. I show you how to ignite it and add Traeger wood pellets to the hopper. You will learn how to tell when the wood-fired Neapolitan pizza oven is hot enough to cook traditional pizza pies. I conclude the video by making some pizza and giving my first impressions of the Big Horn wood-fired oven.
For the money, I believe this to be the best value in both cooking results and build quality. It is constructed of stainless steel and has a quality pizza stone in the bottom of it for a crispy crust. Other competitors in the market are the Ooni Frya 12, Deco Chef Outdoor Pizza Oven, GYBER Fremont Wood Fired Pizza Oven, GRILIFE Pizza Oven, FORNATO Outdoor Portable Pizza Oven, ROCCBOX by Gozney Portable Outdoor Pizza Oven.
This oven can be converted to a gas oven using the propane adapter kit. I think the best flavor comes from the use of wood pellets. I used Pecan Traeger brand wood pellets for my first pizza night. I can’t wait to experiment with other types of wood including oak, mesquite, cherry, alder, and hickory.

Worlds best pizza oven???? Don’t put that language to get viewers, in Brooklyn we say “gtfoh”. I did not watch, thank God, cauz, there’s no such thing as a worlds best a with pic of a tiny piece of tin in the thumbnail!!
I feel ya. I AM trying to get viewers and the title is what gets the click regardless of the quality of content these days, unfortunately. I think "World's Best Pizza Oven Under $200" might be more fitting for this oven. Didn't think buddy the Elf would be coming threw for "the worlds best cup of coffee". Thanks for watching!
@@JTVLIFE ive seen places all over this world touting that they are the "Worlds Best........" its a ploy to get customers, same as what you did :) good job!
Got the oven for Christmas. Had each of your videos roll threw love the experiments. Keep them coming.
Thanks, will do!
Got mine from $159 Amazon. Oven is a little fire beast! Got my stone up to 915 degrees in no time! JTV delivered a good video here.
Glad you enjoyed. The pizza journey is a hell of a drug and you can get your fix without blowing all you dough!!!
Cool video. Great style. No nonsense. Keep it up. And thanks for the content!
Ian Bowers I am happy you appreciate the style! I try to keep it brief, easy to follow yet in-depth and entertaining. Thanks in advance for the Subscription! If you have anything you want to see let me know!
Thanks for sharing super helpful info on startup. 👍
You're Welcome. Thanks for watching!
Great video bro, keep up the good work and thanks for the vid
Thanks for the compliment!
I got mine for Father's day I have not used it yet and lost the manual. Thanks to this video I won't need it Cheers !!
Glad I can help. Hopefully I'll have some more time in the coming months to get more Big Horn content out!
good job dude
Good to see a better quality video on this oven. I ordered mine over the weekend and can’t wait to get it in. I’ll post a video as well and see if we can get this pizza oven off the ground!
I love it. Previously I had one of those grill box ones you put in your grill but didn't get hot enough and didn't get the flavor of the wood. I am still trying to get my hands on the camp chef attachment for my camp chef stove system. The 2 burner 14" model is hard to come by at a reasonable price. Thank you for supporting my channel!
@@JTVLIFE I tried one of those as well as setting up my Weber kettle as a pizza oven but it didn’t work quite as I wanted. The bighorn seems promising
@@PutnamBrew It is quality, I can't believe they didn't jack the price up once they ran out the first time. It is currently out of stock again. Good on them for making killer backyard pizza attainable to the masses!
great video...funny too...we found the oven on ebay for $158.00 + tax....but this will be fun to cook with the family....thanks for the video
You’re welcome Kenneth.
I just ordered one of these Friday should be here Thursday looking forward to making some real wood fired pizza
The oven is a game changer!! Please come back and let us know what wood you are using!!
@@JTVLIFE I plan on using oak
I worked at a place in college that made wood fired pizzas and they exclusively used oak. Can’t wait to get my hands on some! Just re’ed up on maple and pecan before the Big Horn showed up.
Try Royal Oak Charcoal's new Charcoal pellets! I would be interested to see how that charcoal wood flavor would translate to the pizza. thanks for the review!
Thanks for the sub. Check out the royal oak vid! czcams.com/video/QoXNbiZiyiM/video.html
Hi Jason 👋 great video. Very informative can you use wood chips instead of pellets?
Christina Serrano Thank you. Gus C asked the same thing. I am gunna pick some lump charcole up tonight and see how it works! Stay tuned for video!!
This video seems promising. czcams.com/video/5Vw4VBX92aI/video.html
Can hard wood fire be used or Charcoal? Seems too much of a pellet hog
Where do you recommend to get pellets ? And what kind.. I’m looking online and most are flavored
Finance Seed - I like the pitboss off Amazon. The flavor is kind of irrelevant since the oven cooks so hot and the pizza is in such short of a time. amzn.to/3jBPG3S. They range from 9.99 to 13.99 on any given day. They seem to light the easiest and burn the hottest in my trials! - Jason
I want one but I want one that uses wood, not wood pellets. There isn't a store within an hour of me that sells them, and I have access to good, seasoned maple and hickory chips that do really well in my open grill that I do burgers on. I hate to have to buy the more expensive Ooni that can take anything, but if this one can't burn wood like I want, going to end up going that route.
I agree, one that burns wood would be optimal. I think the size of these ovens is what prohibits that. Thanks for watching - Jason
how hot does the table underneath get? i see ur using a wooden table/ any issue with POSSIBLE burning?
@Tony Gilbert - It does not get hot at all, or at least not hot enough to burn the table. I have been using a plastic table lately that has more room and it hasn't suffered any burns either. I still wouldn't use it on a table I really care about because of the ash and the chance of pellets coming out of the back when you empty the ash tray. But no trouble with melted tables yet! Thanks for watching!
@@JTVLIFE yeah im gonna have a friend build me one glad i saw this video. no way im paying $300 for the other brand
I got it for 99 bucks when it first came up!
Thanks for the good video. I think having to fill the hopper (seems tricky with the funny tool) every time you put a pizza in is enough of a bother for me NOT to buy this. Even the Oomi's seem to have a problem retaining the heat for very long. In the long run these un-insulated ovens will cost more with more fuel used than insulated ones.
Upon further use I have found that once you get it lit, just fill the hopper up all the way and let it eat. In the beginning I was experimenting with how to get the optimal burn of pellets while keeping it lit. Very soon I will be doing a review on a new brand of oven that is insulated so stay tunned! - Jason
@@JTVLIFE I actually found some reused fire brick for $2 a piece. Bought like 80 of them, built a boxed oven using grill grates to support the bricks above. Made a chimney in the front. It was 2 brick thick all around. made a fire with hickory wood chunks and made some pizza in it! It turned out awesome! every inch towards the coals jumped up 100 F. 6 hours later, the brick temp in the middle was still over 300 F with the same coals.
If you don't have any kind of torch what can you use?
Connie, if you have some of those new school charcole starters like this amzn.to/3FSOKQ1 or this or this amzn.to/3vgtkHx you can make it work by putting a small amount of pellets in fire tray then one of these get it going and too with more pellets slowly till things are popn enough to put in oven.
Did you have to turn the pizza while cooking?
No. It cooks so fast you would be letting too much heat out to open the door and turn it that you wouldn’t get an optimal bake. When the oven is preheated long enough it cooks very even!
How hot is your pizza stone should be ,to cook the pizza for this oven?
@Joan Season - I heat the oven until my temp gun maxes out which is around 750 degrees F. The hotter the better, especially or Neapolitan pizza. This will make sure you get the leoparding on the bottom which is the black spots. The flame coming across the top of the oven cooks the cheese and toppings very fast. This is the opposite of what normally happens in you houses oven. To make sure the bottom of the crust cooks as fast as the top of the pie make sure the stone is super hot! About 20 minutes pre heat time should do it. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
Where can I get the gas attachment?
@Lee Rhodes - I have not seen one since I originally purchased the Big Horn. I want to get one and test it for everyone but have not been able to find one. I will keep you posted if I come across one!
If you need a pizza stone replacement who sells them I believe these stones are a bit thicker an 12 x 12
So the Big Horn Pizza Oven stone is exactly 12”x12” and it’s removable?
It sure is!
Have you ever tried wood chips
No. For the most part they smoke a lot rather than burn and do have an astringent flavor if not burn “blue”. I’ll give it a try though! Stay tuned for vid!
Anyone know a cover that would fit this bighorn pizza oven?
Answering my own question but for those who got this pizza oven, the uuni 3 cover fits it perfectly
@@vinisterz or a 55 gallon heavy duty garbage bag fits
@Arvin Xie - Check out - amzn.to/3nygLF8
How's it coming with that missing screw?
Full transparency, I left town right after posting this video for a little over a week and forgot the info card to contact them. I have since called the number which is a generic customer service line and they had no information in their database on this product, lol. It was recommended to go to Menard's to find replacement parts. We don't have those near me. A quick search on their website does not turn up any Big Horn products. I emailed them today June 9th, 2021, and will let you know if/when I hear anything back. Thank you for the reminder!
@@JTVLIFE No worries. Thanks for the great review by the way.
Don’t stop keep recording
More to come very soon! - Jason
I was one of the first to get it got for 99 bucks
That is sweet. When did you score that?
@@JTVLIFE like 4 months ago on Amazon. Was new release at the time..just got $50 bucks back tho from it it's starting to rust on the inside already..so watch out for that
I have a video on my channel of it
oak is a good wood for pizza
Def getting oak next time I run out!
Pecan smoked pizza???
If you don't keep that fire going and it gets smothered out it will for sure smoke it! I have been using the Royal Oak pellets lately and haven't had as many smoke sessions.
Easy to convert to propane
Any experience using propane?
Mine is starting to rust
The bbq Shack Where do you live? So far mine has just discolored on the chimney.
@@JTVLIFE Florida but its inside all the time after I use it it's inside on the top were the flame is...above the pizza might have to wipe some Soot away
Curious if you've tried any other Pizza Ovens in order to make the statement " Worlds Best Backyard Pizza Oven". Heavy statement.
Haha! Pretty funny right? At the time there weren’t that many options, especially in the sub $200 options. Now years later it is still my all around favorite! Worlds best anything certainly needs context but it’s gets the humans clicking! Thanks for watching - Jason
Still sold out. I'm pissed.
Set up a notification or leave it in your cart so you get update when they are back in stock!! I kill my self on analysis paralysis did the same thing with the brake controller for my Atlas. I’ll send good vibes to your Amazon cart! Thanks for watching!
@@JTVLIFE got it today, faster than I thought but still a month wait, but I fired it up right away, did a fast and dirty dough, and yuuuuuuuppppppp. I'm making some good pizza. I only let the dough rest an hour and still got a nice crust. Worth every penny, needs a learning curve, but I doubt I'll ever order pizza take out again. I'm in new York, I get all the good ingredients, I enjoy the process of making dough. I'm happy. And didn't have to spend $400. I wish I could make a bigger pie, that's my only negative
@enter a name here I am with you on the bigger pie. Neapolitan is not my go to, because I like 16" and bigger, but this thing makes them as good as the $30 ones from sit down Italian places that make old school pizzas. I have used it 4 times and still trying to get the pellet additions in before the flame goes out without over loading and smothering it. I smoked my neighbors out so hard a few nights ago. Looked like a train was rolling coal through the back yard for about 4 minutes. You almost need run it like a train with a person feeding the dragon and someone working the pies!
@@JTVLIFE same. The pellets go quick. But oh well, the satisfaction of a job well done is cathartic. Thanks for the video, big inspiration. I'll update when I perfect it
The flavor pellets don't matter..you are cooking the pizza less then 2 minutes. It won't impart flavor into the crust
Most defiantly. They burn so clean at these temps there is little to no smoke. Learned that on the Traeger and even more true on these types of ovens. Thanks for watching - Jason
What is fragily🤣
frag·ile
/ˈfrajəl/

(of an object) easily broken or damaged.
"fragile items such as glass and china"
Worlds best pizza oven?? ahahahahaha!!! nice joke! Now come to Italy, some good guys want to know you.
Hans, I would love that opportunity. I was going for the “worlds best affordable pizza oven obtainable by the average Joe off Amazon”. Not literally the worlds best pizza oven 😂. Thanks for watching - Jason
Sis u seriously talk for an hour and not show more then 2 mins of cooking pizza because i cant find it
