- Nintendo Switch Online is a service that is loved by some, and hated by others. While this service definitely has some good features, it is far from perfect, and there are a lot of issues that this service has. In this video, I will discuss the main problems I have with this online service, and how Nintendo could potentially fix them.

My issue with paying $20 a year is that we're not even covering server costs. Basically every online connection on the switch is peer to peer, even on fast paced games like Splatoon. We pay $20 a year for a "service" that's reliant on *everyone* in the game to have a strong wifi connection to even be reasonably playable.
naw, they had good online services for free before. the wii, wii u, ds, and 3ds all worked well online. for no cost at all. it doesn’t really cost them that much to get good quality servers and keep them up as they’re a huge company. they just don’t care
@@mrdaddu3852 mkwii connection was still peer to peer, as with other games. that's why Nintendo WFC was free when it existed. there were *technically* servers, but they handled so little info (mainly for matchmaking purposes I imagine) that even Wiimmfi is completely fine being supported by exclusively donations
I agree with bringing back the virtual console. I didn't purchase a lot of classic games from wii, wii u, and 3ds cause I own the cartridges and discs however I wish I would have bought virtual console games so I wouldn't have to dig out an old console to play a retro game.
The sad thing is, pretty soon, the 3DS and Wii U servers will shut down pretty soon, which means that there will be absolutely no way to play ANY Nintendo Online Multiplayer games for free anymore (without the use of fanmade servers)
I agree, even the Nintendo eShop on the switch is horrible. It just lags so much and is not pleasing to use at all. If Nintendo was able to make online servers smooth running back in 2012 with the 3DS and Wii U, there is no excuse why they can’t with the switch.
It's literally awful! There's so much lag and there isn't even any music in the background. It feels so dead compared to the 3DS/Wii U eShops.
Physical games are better anyway
True but Nintendo pay for the sever back then and it was free and they did monitor it as much on the 3DS and WiiU like DS and Wii Nintendo did monitor it a bots that automated kicks or banned players from the server if they were cheating/hacking or them. So the 3ds & WiiU sever has very little anti cheat and because they didn’t take the people would mod their console and they have learned their lesson especially from the switch v1 Novida chip the Nintendo Switch v1 had and they have to shut down the 3ds and WiiU sever so they can save mods while still operate their other servers on the switch. And they COVID pandemic was just on the horizon so they have to do it which it suck but I can see why because back then it was free online now u have to pay a subscription which issue the bad compare to Xbox and Sony
Oh the eShop lag is insane. I mean it sometimes takes 5 seconds my button input to go through.
@@Nintenguin just get the game physically then if you can
I played Golden Sun when I was a kid and got the expansion pass to play them again. After I finish the games, I doubt I'll ever play them again, so I'm fine with what I'm getting out of expansion. Everything else is a bonus.
Wait till he figures out that Nintendo does not even have sever because Nintendo online is ptp(person to person) so they don't even pay sever cost
Super mario maker 2 is the game that really made it common knowledge for me that the service sucks
True. it effective Super Mario Maker 2 sales because of it
EXACTLY. The least they can do is make the servers like the Xbox and PlayStation ones. Now yes I do enjoy the online and the expansion pack (I play the n64 games a lot) but it’s unbearable with how much lag we got on half the games we play.
I hope the next Nintendo console goes back to virtual console instead of Nintendo Switch 2 online
remember when online services were free? I do :( do you know how hard it is to get my family to say yes for a damn $20 card? ;-; they say no to everything,so yeah very difficult, thanks nintendo, you took away one freedom I had for online services,I love asking to get a damn card for online services just for them to say no each time
there will be a day were i can tell my grand kid how we use to play online games for free. now Nintendo - Microsoft & Sony is forcing people to pay to play online games where the pc gamers are still playing their online games for free.
As a huge Nintendo FAN, NOT DEFENDER (of predatory anti-consumer practices), If you have other ways to play these games, weather it be Virtual console, or even (In many cases) OG hardware, don't bother with the expansion pass. I only got it to see if it was worth it, and even then, I only got it because they actually added GBA games, which I've never had access to. The only reason I would get it again would be to play games that I literally cannot play otherwise. Grabbing a Wii U for cheap and then loading up on VC games there would be ideal, but OOPSIE DAISY, NINTENDO SHUT DOWN THE WII U E-SHOP. THANKS, NINTENDO. I actually need to finish up the games I've been playing on the EP before it renews/My time expires or I'm in the hole $60, and after that I'm only waiting for Wario Land 4. Which, by the way, the drip feeding is ABYSMAL. We're almost A FULL YEAR into having GBA games and we STILL don't have all of the FIRST PARTY CLASSICS. And we WERE STILL lacking some games on SNES until fairly recently (Some probably are still waiting for their favorites that I'm unaware of), a service that came out HALF OF A FLIPPING DECADE AGO. It took TWO YEARS TO GET DONKEY KONG COUNTRY. What the actual heck is going on at Nintendo?!?!?!?!?!
The base $20 is... Okay though. Yes, I also believe basic online play should be free. Needing to pay $20 yearly ON TOP OF $60 just to play Splatoon 3 the intended way is an absolute fricking crime. On the other hand though, having access to the NOW minimum acceptable library for NES and SNES and finally, adding GB to the mix is a nice bonus. Mario Maker Online isn't that great anyway with all of the hot garbage levels (but that DEFINITELY doesn't excuse it). And Smash is tolerable for the most part. I say the $20 is worth it, at least for the average casual player (For now), but I definitely expect better in the future.
My biggest gripe with Nintendo online is you can’t talk to friends online without a freaking cellphone
I still don't understand why they make you use the app to vc
Love Your Videos Bro ❤❤❤
Thanks 😁
The worst part is nowadays I think the Wii U is more worth it than the switch but I still like the switch but joycon drift expensive games and controllers lacking online service just brings down the console so if you are looking for a good switch like experience with no drift and no
expensive games just get a Wii U.
I think Nintendo Switch Online should be Free Tbh
It absolutely should
@@nicholasfornaro i would rather buy a N64 System then Switch Online
I would rather them sell their old games on an e-store like they used to, though I do prefer physical games. But they don’t want you to own games, just rent them forever. That’s where we are headed, and I’m not going there.
I have never paid for NSO since online multiplayer should be free.
I don't blame you
The price reflects the quality, switch online is cheap in both meanings of the word.
I disagree, plenty of games and online services are able to run websites and games for FREE! In the ps3/xbox 360 era it might have made sense to charge for online, but nowadays it doesnt make any sense! Before nintendo introduced switch online, the online servers for games like mario kart were free! They introduced it just before smash ultimate came out, knowing that many players would be forced to pay. So no its not cheap
@@samba9349 nonsensical string of words with no identified conclusion
@@minecrafter3448 It is cheaper to run online services now, the switch online used to be free, instead of it being improved they now just charge for a bad service. In 2024 it is greedy to charge for something that is ran for a very low cost.
For me the expansion pack should have included ALL first party DLC, but rhey don't Splatoon 3 DLC and BOTW comes to mind.
Sounds fair to me!
Here's to hoping the next Nintendo console has a better online service! Nintendo seems to have always been behind the times when it comes to any online functionality.
I NEED virtual console back.
Removing Virtual Console was one of the dumbest things Nintendo did
Is it worth the money? Absolutely not. They used to give us the same thing for _free,_ but decided to start charging us for it. Back during the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS days you didn't have to pay a penny for online gameplay. And the servers are _just_ as good as they were when it was free.
You said it perfectly. They only charge us because they know that their service is the only way to play games like Smash online, and they know that fans will still purchase it even if it’s a ripoff.
Speaking of online, Nintendo will shut down the online service for Nintendo 3DS & Wii U in April!
Yeah I heard about that and it sucks
3:08 😂😂😂
I can't tell you how frustrated I was
Yeah Nintendo online can be rough depending where you are and what internet network you’re using.
Nintendo gamers are one of a kind.
Expansion Pack, more like I need to "Explode That Pack"
I can see why they did that and COVID-19 pandemic was just on the horizon so they were going to lose a lot of money during the pandemic and even was stuck at home and almost everything was locked down
The 3ds and Wii U had free online and the switch does not
It’s not as bad as trying to play online on PlayStation like if I wanna play with my friends and switch I have to pay once and not like subscription based
I remember when the switch was free to play online till November of 2018 when they started pushing the $20 a year memberships. I share a family plan with my girlfriend and 6 of my friends so we all pay $10 each for something we’d normally be paying $50 for. Family plan for this goes a long way honestly, but at the same time, Nintendo’s online servers are horrendous. They should’ve made the online free while making everything else from cloud storage to N64, SNES, etc. as its own membership plan. If their online service was up to par alongside Xbox and Playstation (as it should) then maybe it would’ve been worth paying for the service
So true, and I hope that these issues get fixed with their next console
I feel like the plan is good, considering i take advantage of playing the retro games. but if they had what playstation has with having monthly games for free and cloud streaming, i think it would make the membership worth.
@@kyongu375 I can totally see your point since the if you use the retro games then the service might be worth it for you!
It's not nintendo SWITCH online it's just nintendo online cuz guess what non-nintendo multiplayer games on switch work just fine
Yeah most single player games work fine (except the ones with frame drops lol)
i have this for the old games
The amount of games that I've stopped playing due to the bad online sucks
Id love to play smash, mario party etc. Online but they're so bad I cant 🗿
Dude I used to play SMM2 online back in 2019 all the time but I quit literally because there were times when the lag was so bad the game would just freeze. I barely play that game now lol.
Great Job!❤👏🏻👌🏻👍🏻👋🏻
Thanks
It sucks you have to pay 20 bucks just to play online. It’s even worse than on Xbox or PlayStation. But the expansion pass forget about it.
At least Xbox and PlayStation have high quality online
@@nicholasfornaro here’s my idea: Nintendo Switch Online+: “Better Online”, 0 Wii Games and a slap in the face
Also, I forgot to mention this if you have Xbox game pass, which is like like $10/15 you can play online
Oh, one more thing with PC you don’t even have to pay a single penny to play online games
@@isaactman32 yeah I don’t have an Xbox or a pc because I’m broke. I can barely afford Nintendo online rn
No lie I hate how you have to pay for online but I love the pfps and the old games and the VC is cool too
I 100% agree with you all the way!
I don’t play PlayStation or Xbox so I don’t know what it’s like to have lag free online
Unpopular opinion: I think the online servers were always fine for me at least.
I honestly prefer Virtual Console over NSO, not because of emulation quality (except with N64, emulation quality is a huge factor there), but purely because it's more nostalgic. I love Nintendo, I still love their output generally speaking, but they've gotten a lot more corporate after the 8th generation
Not to mention I can pirate Virtual Console titles now and inject whatever games I want into them- sorry, what was I saying
Online play should most certainly be free. If we are paying $20 for online play, it better have some good connection, but it doesn't.
Personally, I still have the NSO Expansion pass because I do not mod my old consoles, and I prefer being able to play these games with a Switch controller and better quality graphics. Playing these old games on the OG consoles with newer TV's tends to hurt my eyes. However, if there is a way that anyone can just obtain the games through modding, by all means do it. It would be more cost effective.
Having to pay over $65.00 for a expansion pack sucks so much
The expansion pack is a ripoff
@@nicholasfornaro It just gets more access to retro games that I don't play
True is a rip off and u might as well buy the 20$ 12 months subscription that for everything including retro games too but I barely play anyway
I completly agree with you
Tried to play some mk8d online yesterday and kept getting a Unable to connect to other consles error when i had full bars
Mm2, i dont even play multiplayer vs or co-op that much any more since its just a laggy mess
And i dont know how many times i played the Vitural consels, but i do know i dont play them alot
Funny how wimmfi has better online than Nintendo servers
Wiimmfi is better, free, and it is made by fans. NSO is laggy and made by a company with tons of money, yet they make you pay for it. Makes total sense!
Mario maker 2 even without lag sucks so the lag is just the Cherry on top
I never play online cuz I don't have friends, and I don't play retro games because I can emulate those with a MUCH vaster library than Nintendo will ever offer. So literally ALL I'm paying for with NSO is Cloud save. And now that I think about it even that is optuse now since I no longer have two Switches.
When they announced GBA games I was actually millimeters away from subbing to the expansion pack... but then they told us the pathetic amount of games that would launch with the service. See? That's again the type of shit that pushes people to emulate, because we get more than bloody fucking NINE games that way.
I’ll never understand how Nintendo justifies their terrible Online in this day of gaming
Let's hope they fix it with the next console!
The truth about Nintendo switch 2 (the I think they will make a console named Nintendo ultra like the wii)
Nintendo needs to fix their network every time play mk8 it disconnects I think it’d p2p
Still
Always has been. 😂
I’m sort of neutral on it tbh
I completely agree with all of your points. NSO has always seemed, kinda cheap. They know that online was free but now they charge you for it in exchange of getting some small benefits like retro games and game trials for example, and of course the online itself is poor. It just seems kind of sneaky how they also lock things like Save Data Cloud behind a paywall, I mean come on. NSO if anything is a prime example of corporation getting as much money out of their fans as possible.
100% facts
Don't forget online for PC online gaming is absolutely complete free on all digital storefronts like Steam, Epic, Microsoft etc
it's a money grab
I have to disagree a bit because im going to (hopefully) be getting switch online expansion pass this year and it's mostly so that i can play the older games like the n64 and when you look at it as not paying for online, but paying for the older games it really is a great deal (I also don't really plan playing online with the older games). Also unlike you, i dont have one of nintendos previous systems or that many virtual console titles on it. However, this is where I agree with you, I think that they shouldn't have you pay for online and the only reason why i think they put online behind a paywall was so that they could get enough money to put more third party games on the service which could be wrong, but its my only guess.
If you plan on using the retro games then NSO could actually be worth it for you
I don’t know about getting the expansion pack, I was going to get it because I wanted to try out the N64 games. But after watching this I don’t know about getting it.
