Antivegans have consistantly moved the goal post since I went vegan.
First they said "veganism can't be done"
    Then I went vegan.
Then they said "you will be deficient in a couple of years"
So I did bloodwork, which came back fine.
Then they said "You can't get enough protein on a vegan diet"
So I tracked my macros and came out with 140 grams of protein/day without trying.
Then they said "The protein in plants is inferior and you can't build muscle on it"
So I worked out for about 8 months and increased my strength and my body weight went up 8 kilos.
Then they said to "veganism can't be done longterm"
So I asked them to specify longterm.
Now, after having been vegan for 8 years, they say "not all people can be vegan, and most people quit veganism".
And I personally know about 15 vegans or so, and not a single one is unhealthy or ex-vegan.
I'm sick of these excuses and false statements!

I can add to that. My niece went vegan, ended up in hospital anemic and very ill. I went vegan, ended up with iron transfusions (twice) and told not to be one as I don't absorb plant protein. I work for doctors and trust me, there are deficient vegans. You said you ate 140grams of protein but the DIAAS says unless you ate soy, those were not 'digested and absorbed' complete proteins. You can't thrive on a vegan diet if you are pregnant and menstruating and so on unless you supplement, and some people who are genetically prone to deficiency in ALA conversion can have eye problems from their diet. We might be fortunate to have a load more supplements now, but if you only ate vegan and didn't supplement with fancy oils and B12 and so on you would be ill. Many vegans go carnivore to 'fix' their malnourished bodies. Are you calling them all liars? I don't care - I am a healthy omnivore - but just because N = 1 doesn't indicate everyone should eat a certain way. We are genetically different. I do not absorb plant iron very well - my haematologist told me not to be vegan. Young fit men who are vegan can go a bit longer than menstruating childbearing women. There are people for whom a purely plant diet is very detrimental to their health. I hate the cult mentality. eat what you want but if you don't thrive no one should tell you that you 'failed' that diet. You may want to read this for example "Plant-based pregnancy: Experts spotlight supplementation to offset vegan diet deficiencies"

@@Petunia-fl9lu There are so many things to respond to in your post, but I don't want to, because you won't care either way.
What I want to respond to is your statement: "Many vegans go carnivore to 'fix' their malnourished bodies. Are you calling them all liars?"
No, not liars, but definately misinformed and/or illogical. If you have one particular type of problem, and you solve it by doing a 180 degree turn, to a lifestyle that lacks evidence, logic, nutrients, compassion and that is totally opposite from how you were just living, I can't see you as a rational person.
I could maybe at least understand - not condone or support - but understand that someone starts eating meat because of misinformation and pressure from people like family or doctors. But if one would actually believe that all problems one have come from a plant based diet, and eating only animals will fix it, then that person is not thinking straight and they don't understand nutrition.

I have been vegan for about 8 years now and recently learned that creatine as a supplement is especially beneficial for those of us who do not eat meat. Mostly having to do with enhanced muscle mass when using resistance training. Humans do generate creatine from other types of food, however supplementing with creatine helps compensate for the fact that we don't get the dietary creatine that is found in meat. That doesn't mean a plant-based diet is not as good however. The advantages outweigh the disadvantages and supplemental creatine is inexpensive and easy to take.

      @11235Aodh Před 19 dny +2

Our bodies make creatine from amino acids, all amino acids are found in all vegetables and fruits. Extra creatine just frees up these amino acids to be used for something else (usually they end up in the toilet as urine as we collectively get plenty of amino acids if we eat whole foods).

I, uh, basically almost had scurvy on a "balanced" omnivore diet. Vitamin C levels on my blood test were soooo low and my body was starting to feel it. It's a lot easier to eat in my calorie range and get enough nutrition plant based than before. Cronometer is a godsend. Even protein seems to be a non-issue, and I easily see 90-100g without supplementation. I didn't go plant based sooner because of all the scary "your hair will fall out!" type of stories you would hear about vegans, and I wish I had done more research earlier in life. Oh well, here we are now! Thanks for great content Mic!

To me, the regenerative argument only holds true (or partially true) if the number of cattle are 1) sharply reduced, and 2) other plant based agricultural methods are used in conjunction with the cattle- based methods (like having the cattle moved around frequently to prevent overgrazing and damaging the soil).
In other words, for "regenerative " livestock methods to even partially reduce greenhouse emissions it still necessitates drastically reducing beef consumption by reducing the number of cattle raised for slaughter (or for dairy use).
So at best it isn't as simple or as easy or as elegant as transitioning to a vegan/plant based food system, or as effective .

I'm vegan for ethics. And my political ideals such as 2nd Amendment for self-defense and my position being largely pro-life with limited exceptions, would have those conspiracy nutters in disbelief. There are ethical vegans who hold some or a lot of opinions most would consider "conservative". I think veganism isn't about political party, but about people who have a heart/compassion and compassionate people are in both political parties. It's completely normal to be conservative and an ethical vegan. Many morals actually align when people are being consistent. I consider myself politically center-right. I believe in smaller government with common sense safety nets and want a society of caring people who want the best for each other and the world.

I've been vegan for 10 years now and in the last couple of years I've been feeling so tired and borderline sick, but I know it's not my diet because a) I felt 10 times worse before I was vegan b) I tried going back to eating meat and eggs all bought from a butcher shop who only sold locally farmed meat and that didn't make me feel any better (It didn't make me feel worse but also no better) And c) Even when I was broke living off the food bank and underweight I still felt better than I do now.
So honestly I think stress and burnout could be the culprit for many of these people who suddenly feel ill or that they're missing something from their diet.
I believe the reason I feel sick is that I just don't eat enough calories, I just struggle to get enough food in me every day and some days hardly eat a thing. But this channel is a huge motivator to keep eating healthy and not back down!

the environmental impact of the meat industry in America should not be extrapolated to the rest of the world. grass pastured cattle rain fed is not the same as industrial cattle lots. the initial environmental calculations did not compare cow emissions with exhaust emissions, and that study was retracted - yet still referred to. Methane from cows is minimal compared to cement, flights, and compared to fossil fuels for cars and trucks - and fossil fuel burning hangs around hundreds of years compare to cow burps which are reabsorbed - rotting plant matter gives off methane and its part of a natural cycle. But cherry picking is rife in the food cults.

When I was 18, I decided to get in shape. I was at 157 and started training with aerobic via biking all over town and running every morning + did full body routine on hydragym gear (hydraulics are perfect for not hurting oneself while working on explosive power vs Weight lifting which I then added 1 year later on after getting in basic great shape).
Anyways, as part of getting in shape, I went with No meats, No dairies No alcohols...
Just nuts, Fruits, Legumes and Fruits (no bonbons or candies or sweets other that once every 2 weeks as Fruits are sweet enough and delicious anyways). Turns out I gained 35 pounds of muscle mass and shot up to 192 pounds in about 3 months of healthy living. Did i miss the meats? Not at all. Did I miss he cheeses? Nope. Did I miss the alcohol... again, not at all!
At the time, my body fat was extremely low, i was at athlete's levels of performance and never backed down from any physical activities & even did modeling in live photo-shoots and live runway work for a while.
I'm now past mid 50's and I do enjoy life, but meat is more of a "because i'm doing like the romans" when I visit friends and they have meat on the table as the main course... I am a social creature and I can eat meat without suffering too much the next day...
but I do not miss meat in my life.
As a matter of fact, I enjoy great foods without meats (so much great recipes to do as Vegan!).
And I just feel fine :)
So, eat meats if you want to, but don't BS me with the idea that it is a bad thing not to have any... Cheers!
    ;)
