This is a favorite song for me. However, the lyrics continue to confuse me, even years later. At the beginning of the song, the girl calls ex Bf’s phone and gets his answering machine. His message says “if this is Austin…l”. This makes me think Austin is the girlfriend’s first name. That makes sense. However, the next lyric section has him saying that “he figured she went BACK TO AUSTIN BECAUSE SHE TALKED about IT ALL THE TIME.” That lyric section makes it sound like Austin was either a CITY she moved back to OR the name of another ex boyfriend. Finally, in the final verse she says “this is Austin and this is no machine you’re talking to…”. Now, I am back to thinking Austin is her first name OR Hence, my confusion. Can anyone clarify Austin for me?

i mean, yes, it's definitely her first name.... but it's also the city she went back to. it *is* kind of confusing to have it in the song like this but (1) it could happen in real life lol and (2) sound-wise it's pleasant that the word "austin" is recurrent throughout the song, even though in 1 out of 4 times it means a different thing, so i think that's why they did it
as nice as the storytelling aspect in this song is, in reality a lot of it doesn't make sense (who records different voicemails every two days?), but i think all of it is done for this "the chorus is the same but slightly different each time" effect, so the song is more poetic/melodic than it is logical
