Lonesome Dove is a masterpiece. I have read the book about 5 times over the years. And watched the series over and over to the point of being able to recite the dialogue at length. When Robert Duvall did not win the Emmy for his performance I became disgusted with the awards. All of the performances are first rate. Do not miss this series. I think it is one of the very very best. It builds slowly. Life was hard.
If I was stranded on a desert island (that somehow had electricity, a tv, and DVD player), and I could have one movie, and one book, Lonesome Dove would be my pick for both, hands down, wouldn’t even have to think about it!!
If you haven’t seen this movie, you have missed the greatest Western. Don’t keep missing it, watch it. You won’t be sorry and I’ll bet you watch it again and again.
When Claire and Gus are talking by the water during the picnic and Claire taps Gus with her foot to make a point, I thought that was fine acting. I really liked Claire’s character.
This is by far the very best western series/movie that I have ever seen. I have seen many good one like The Man who Shot Liberty Vallence, High Noon, Rio Bravo, my Darling Valentine but nothing comes close to how characters are depicted. I think that this does justice to those early settlers of the old west!! Certainly one to not miss👍👍
This is eerie. My grandfather was also from Texas like TLJ, and it's unbelievable how alike their voices are. No outright Texan accent, but that slow, thoughtful cadence is identical.
I’m happy to comment that I’ve watched Lonesome Dove for the first time. I’ll never forget it. Absolutely LOVE IT. I bet people reading this are wishing they could watch it for the first time again too.
When an artist looks back on their life’s work there may be just a few awe inspiring moments that they were fortunate enough to be a part of. Lonesome Dove as one of the great films of the 20th century must be one of such moments. Any person who’s not seen Lonesome Dove has missed a truly special work. I’ll watch it every few years to reacquaint myself with these wonderful characters. I miss them if it goes too long.
Slamma, Centennial by James Michner is another good. Since he covers a span of over a 100 years when the characters die you feel the lose. It’s as if you’ve known them. Watching movies like this fortifies how brief life is. Centennial is great. That said I’m with you on LD being a favorite. “By God Woodrow”
I grew up in the mountains, and can identify with many of the things protrayed in this movie. I loved this movie. Reminds me of things I did as a kid. Great job guys.
This film has been by far my favorite WESTERN !!!!!!!!!!!! Most realistic of how things really happened , no dressing up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ALL actors were MORE than excellent !!!!!!!!!!!
Lonesome dove was played around the holidays. Most of my family that I watched this with originally are gone. So I guess I could say this cast and this movie were kinda in the fabric of my upbringing and my great uncles loved this movie because they were very much like this and could probably live vicariously through the movie as well
OMG! It has it all! A magnificent western. 4-5 love stories. Perfect casting. The wonderfull era. Action, action, action. What horsemanship. What a cattle drive. Beautiful scenery. Magnificent photography. Need I go on?
It's one of the best western movies I've ever seen it's an epic it's a little bit of everything but very well done very good actors they really show you how it used to be in different times when the world was still Wild I love Indians I love westerns it was very well done I will never stop watching it God bless peace
This miniseries came out when i was 26, just when I was starting to have this "go west" fantasy kick in. That lasted a while. Still had the dream five years later when Tombstone and Wyatt Earp came out. I saw some of the West over the years but never really dud what I wanted. Plenty if disappoihtments and bliwn opportunities but its been a blessing to be alive.
This is one of my favorite mini-series. Centennial is another. I watch each of them about every other year or so. I miss the mini-series format on television.
There's a rumor Ernest Hemingway once bragged he taught Gertrude Stein how to write dialogue. I never believed that. 2 icons of literature. I believe no one wrote dialogue like Larry Mcmurtry in Lonesome Dove.
Practically all these actors will never get a chance to play a better character, but they sure have tried. It's not the best series or mini-series or movie or whatever, it's the best thing ever put on celluloid. I bet they thank their lucky stars they got to be in it. It was like time-traveling really. Such an opportunity.
I new Deets would be considered a part of the Ranch family when after taking care of his horse he came into the Ranch House Kitchen put his rifle in the wall rack walked over, grabbed a chair and sat at the kitchen table reached over and grabbed a slice of bacon and began eating breakfast!
Laurie Darlin!! I hated tht Gus died. This is A true masterpiece. One of those movies whereupon battle with you wanna see a 2nd one but also don’t want to because you know there’s no way it can measure up to the original ESPECIALLY if the actors are different
Charles goodnight and Oliver loving were real.. the book is loosely based on those two gentlemen, so the story look those two guys up, lonesome Dove in my opinion is the best mini-series and respects to Western days and times lots of life lessons if you listen ..
I have watched lonesome Dove many many times. Just McCray has always been an iconic hero of mine! For the first time yesterday I realized what a coward and fraud guss was. As was many things in life we are certain that things are a certain way only to find years later it weren't that way at all. Gush and company hung a good friend for not going against five on one. Yet gus had Blue duck one on one with a boulder to hide behind. He didn't have Laurie bring him his rifle because he knew this probably would have provoked a fight. He sat there in his underwear wearing his sidearm exchanging witty banter was one of the most dangerous psychopathic murders of the times! Left of defenseless woman on the side of the river he knew was traveled by this monster. Gus could have demanded and physically thrown Lori darling on a horse and said no ma'am I'll not leave you here alone! This was certainly a cause for all hands on deck to find this murdering renegade! Never before had Blue duck been so close and trackable! The lives lost because of this cowardly act was despicable! I love Gus McCrae! I've noticed many mannerisms that I have picked up from watching McCray. While still the Best Western ever made, and when I will most certainly watch again and again they're never will be the river for custom cray that I've had for many many years. Again, Jake spoon had five against him was usually at least one at his back at all time! There's certainly would have been no victory other than taking down what few he could before he fell. Augustus McRae had Blue duck exactly where he wanted him, one on one! He said "well it could have gone either way"!?! Cowardly actions and cowardly words followed by irresponsibly weak response to the situation. As was so many things in life I find myself faced with the realization that something I have believed in to my soul was not so! That's McCray was a hero of mine from the first I watched the movie. I cannot count the times I have re-watched it. Last night and came to me and my heart broke. I know it's just a movie. But in this day and age true heroes have become harder and harder to find and even harder to keep. I'm 63 years old and someone had told me as little as a month ago that Gus McCray was a coward there would have been a problem! Wonderful movie? Yes greatest Western ever? Most probably! But "I god Woodrow, this hurts!
6:50. I read the book and it was obvious that Deets was going to die. He would complain that the sky was too thin and why did they have to leave Texas. When he gave his protective saint to the baby it was the end of him.
I apologize for the grammar and the misspelling of my prior post. I've always found it hard to remember to preread before I send. Still a little shook up which is no excuse and again I apologize.
The movie cannot touch the book that does not mean that movie is not outstanding that just means the book is that good you gain a greater understanding of the characters and the story in the book the movie was already long enough LOL take the character dish, I'll go re-watch but I don't recall it mentioning why he is called dish. It definitely gives another dimension to the character if you know where he got the name😅 the character gus just I've never seen a better actor picked for a character LOL on the other hand a horrible actor picked to play Jake spoon was probably the worst but all in all not bad for a TV movie
I have seen hundreds of good movies during g my 80+ years. Lonesome Dove is the all-time best Western movie I have ever seen.
It’s my favorite movie ever and the greatest story ever told imo
Lonesome Dove is a masterpiece. I have read the book about 5 times over the years. And watched the series over and over to the point of being able to recite the dialogue at length. Do not miss this series. I think it is one of the very very best. It builds slowly. Life was hard.
I read the book and watched the series multiple times. The characters were wonderful. I can't believe Robert Duvall didn't win
Tv at it's best instead of ALL the crap sitcoms they put on. I have say that the series Longmire comes in a close second, wonderful show!
Duvall and Tommy Lee were absolutely perfect.
The whole cast was terrific. Jasper Dish Newt July
Diane Lane as Lori.
This cast made this miniseries. Gus and Woodrow were perfect against each other and the supporting cast was outstanding.
Well said sir
Lonesome Dove never loses it's power. It never will.
If I was stranded on a desert island (that somehow had electricity, a tv, and DVD player), and I could have one movie, and one book, Lonesome Dove would be my pick for both, hands down, wouldn’t even have to think about it!!
"Well, I won't say I did. And I won't say I didn't. But I will say this. Any man who wouldn't cheat for a poke don't want one bad enough."
Truer words were never spoken LOL
"What's good for me ain't necessarily good for the weak of mind." 😊
the music makes the series, outstanding score brilliant...
If you haven’t seen this movie, you have missed the greatest Western. Don’t keep missing it, watch it. You won’t be sorry and I’ll bet you watch it again and again.

What can I say. I watched this when I was a teenager. I had to ask my momma to stay up late to watch it. I’m now 52 years old. Best movie ever.
I’m happy to comment that I’ve watched Lonesome Dove for the first time. I’ll never forget it. Absolutely LOVE IT. I bet people reading this are wishing they could watch it for the first time again too.
One of my favorite westerns of all time!
GREATEST SERIES EVER MADE!
It was probably one of the best western movies ever made a very good story line and very very very very beautiful women

I have so many memories of watching this mini series with my Grandpa and Dad. When I was young this was in the vcr every other day.
Best western ever made ! 🤗
The greatest western ever made
Certainly one of the most authentic
I'd buy that for a dollar.
I grew up in the mountains, and can identify with many of the things protrayed in this movie. I loved this movie. Reminds me of things I did as a kid. Great job guys.
Hands down
No question

An absolutely wonderful movie. The best I ever saw!!!
This is one of my favorite mini-series. Centennial is another. I watch each of them about every other year or so. I miss the mini-series format on television.
My favorite of all time movie. Was a senior in high school when this was aired
By far my favorite movie. I watch it several times a year, and know the lines by heart. It really is an epic tale that hits on all levels.
“By God Woodrow, it ain’t dyin I’m talkin about it’s livin!” The tears sprouting as I type this says all that needs be.
One of the very top Westerns of all time.
In the interview Diane looked like she was only about 16 years old.
Amazing what make up can do.
There's a rumor Ernest Hemingway once bragged he taught Gertrude Stein how to write dialogue. I never believed that.
2 icons of literature.
I believe no one wrote dialogue like Larry Mcmurtry in Lonesome Dove.
This movie only has 1 versus, Field of Dreams. This is not just a great western, it's 1 of 2 greatest works ever done in all Cinema, ever.
This is a fantastic movie. I could watch this again and again.
One series that I keep watching , great actors and actresses
GOAT Movie/Mini-Series IMO! A one of a kind masterpiece that will never be duplicated! Diane Lane = unbelievable beauty!
Many of us men and women have a Clara Allen in their life. Mine died a few years ago of cancer. I still think of her often.
Jim Deere,sorry for your loss.
I have never read the book, I'm going to now. This show is so well acted by everyone, it is one of favorites
Good LORD Diane doesnt age stilll gorgeous!
She was young 24 years old in 1989 when Dove was released she even looks younger then that I would have thought about 20 years old.
It's very odd but none of the others have aged at all either.
Practically all these actors will never get a chance to play a better character, but they sure have tried. It's not the best series or mini-series or movie or whatever, it's the best thing ever put on celluloid. I bet they thank their lucky stars they got to be in it. It was like time-traveling really. I call it a movie as well Woodrow.
This is the best mini series ever made
Lord, what a beautiful woman.
“Lori, darlin...”
We look at Lonesome Dove often!
Best Western ever done

Reading the novel at the moment.
Best movie ever, western or otherwise. Period!
Gawd I HATED Blue Duck for his UNFORGIVABLE treatment of my sweet, sweet Laurie!!!!!!
He got what he deserved
@@chrisgibson7557 he forgot to fly.
I new Deets would be considered a part of the Ranch family when after taking care of his horse he came into the Ranch House Kitchen put his rifle in the wall rack walked over, grabbed a chair and sat at the kitchen table reached over and grabbed a slice of bacon and began eating breakfast!
I miss Gus!!!
Ain't much of a crime whackin a surly bartender.
the western has been replaced with sit coms, vampires, super heroes and we all suffer because of it. hollywood is lazy and lacking these days.
Agreed
Hollywierd has lost what they once had , the talent is gone. Bunch of clowns trying to make who knows what. Too many drugs ???
Best film of all time
Absolutely beautiful
best western made period
Robert Duval says its his fav role...
The greatest ever
Diane Lanme, as good and as gorgeous as she was in this series, is more so today.
Laurie Darlin!! I hated tht Gus died. This is A true masterpiece. One of those movies whereupon battle with you wanna see a 2nd one but also don’t want to because you know there’s no way it can measure up to the original ESPECIALLY if the actors are different

Diana lane was really beautiful back then
Diane Lave at her 20ths was pretty as a morning.
She's a classic beauty, even today.
Robert Duvall ahhhhh

Diane Lane! What a babe!
Women weren’t allowed in saloons. They were upstairs entertainment.
I apologize for the grammar and the misspelling of my prior post.
I've always found it hard to remember to preread before I send. Still a little shook up which is no excuse and again I apologize.
Lori darling ,pretty as the mornin ❤😊
How did you spend most of your covid viewing time? Watching Lonesome Dove on a loop.
Put that duster down, the people who come in here wouldn't notice a dead skunk on the table, let alone a few crumbs.
Hmmm….now why wasn’t Ricky Schroeder interviewed?
A good many of these characters were based on real life individuals.
Lori darling!!!!!
Diane Lane is almost as pretty as my wife ;-) 😍
You lucky man.
Then Sir, She must be stunning. Coming from a fifth generation Texan.
@@billwhite9703 thanks. I most assuredly am!!
@@nobodysbusiness4828 took me a minute but I got it ;-) wether she is or isn’t, she’s gorgeous. I’ve been told, I out punted my coverage.
Good answer.
It was a script before it was great literature…just wanted you to know.
Ogi ma ma
Lonesome dove and Tombstone were the last real westerns made, just like the grand ole opry, they don't have real country singers any more, just saying.
Diane Lane so Young
Tommy Lee Jones 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Now Hollywood and their sweetheart woke actors read the book and go
" well let's make sure we don't do none of that". 🤣🤣🤣
Fantastic movie/mini-series, and these interviews are a good reflection of the final product. Well done!

The
I would not watch a 2 hour movie about dish. Sorry dish.
Hey. He ain't no dern pup:)
I wish Tommy Lee Jones had played Woodrow again he was perfect not that Jon Voight wasn't good.
Diane Lane is one of the most beautiful woman I have ever seen!
Masterpiece
